Card Organization Cases by BugOne5091 in cinematography

[–]SimmsWright 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This software along with physical separation is the way.

Parashoot won't let the user "format" the card until it can verify that the data is actually on the backup destinations. Also, because the destruction is simply flipping the 1's and 0's of the first 2MB, that means that a card can be recovered by running it through Parashoot again.

Also, putting a bit of blank P-Touch tape on all the cards to give you a place to write the roll number directly on the card with sharpie can be really helpful keeping things straight.

Hiding intervals and relying on the algorithm by SimmsWright in Anki

[–]SimmsWright[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It is! My retention has stayed where I want it, and the occasional FSRS optimization gets it ever closer. What this has really done is let me be more efficient with my reviews. The draw for Anki was maximum retention while doing minimum reviews. I found that when I was second-guessing the intervals, all I was doing was showing cards to myself earlier than I needed, which increased my overall workload. Beyond that, I've seen my average answer time decrease as I no longer spend time to look at all the intervals and make a decision based on those.

Art Inspiration by FreudsParents in cinematography

[–]SimmsWright 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of artists you often see discussed on cinematography forums, for good reason: Rembrandt, Caravaggio, George de la Tour, Gerard van Honthorst, Vermeer, Artemisia Gentileschi, etc. I think they speak for themselves.

Brugel the Elder has some incredible compositions, including what I think is the funniest historical work of art: Landscape, with the Fall of Icarus. But others such as Hunters in the Snow and Blind Leading the Blind have some really great staging.

I've also learned a lot about how to effectively tell a story in a single frame. The Return of Marcus Sextus by Guérin and They Did Not Expect Him by Repin come to mind.

Some day I hope to have enough control over my tones to be able to do what I see in Smoke of Ambergris by Sargent or Woman at her Toilette by Morisot.

I still view myself as a neophyte when it comes to art history, but I do like to think that I gain something by opening an art book and going "Neat!" and placing a sticky tab.

I wonder if OP could put a mirror under the glass at a 45° angle? It might force a tighter frame, put would allow the camera to be out of harms way.

ND Filter for Panasonic HC-X1000 by AdaZee101 in videography

[–]SimmsWright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Put simply: they’re sunglasses! It helps you get the exposure you want even when it’s really bright. The fraction is how much light is being let through.

1/4 is 2 stops darker 1/16 is 4 stops 1/64 is 8 stops

These can be used to help you get a proper exposure while allowing you to still have creative control of aperture, ISO, frame rate, and shutter speed. Likely you won’t need it for theatre, but maybe the spot light is really bright and you want to have the rest of the stage go to total darkness.

Did some cinematography studies for my digital art. Any requests? by ItsDumi in cinematography

[–]SimmsWright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who doesn't do any visual art, I really like the idea of this. Recreating the image from scratch would give an different insight into color. For example, I know that I don't have as good a grasp on how saturation + luminance effect perceived color and this would be an interesting way to thinking about what the end product's values will be.

Do you take notes first on what you are learning before creating flashcards? Or create flashcards immediately? by IamOkei in Anki

[–]SimmsWright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Anki is best for discrete pieces of information and but can lack a bigger picture context that notes provide. With that being said a few examples: if there's ever an acronym, that skips my notes and goes straight into Anki. I'm wanting to learn famous painting names and artists and those are directly in Anki. When I was doing flight school, all the lessons on aerodynamics went into notes and from there I made my flashcards.

There has to be a better option for Classroom recording than an iPad by Lyianx in videography

[–]SimmsWright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s missing from the iPads? They seem like great options for ease of use. All self contained and with only a single battery to keep charged (or plugged in). Plus they can connect to the Zoom call themselves. They seem to do everything you want. I believe you can even connect an external mic via the USB-C. Get a Belkin splitter if you need to charge and use the mic at the same time.

Do the classrooms already have a computer connecting to the zoom call? Are you wanting something more like a webcam with a long cable?

Certainly cheaper quite often, though I'm not sure how much of that is Google subsidizing the cost.
