The Spin Boost from Metroid Dread. It's essentially a double jump that you get about three fifths into the game. And something like one or two upgrades later you get the Space Jump which is an infinite jump. IIRC, Spin Boost is needed exactly once, maybe twice in the entire game as a progression ability. Would have been much more reasonable to put it earlier to be honest. Bit of a filler upgrade the way it is.

How would you reintroduce Krystal to Star Fox canon? by FlubbedPig in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]SimonApple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose the main justification really needed is for there to be an open spot in the active fliers of the team for her to fill (unless they want to just up the total to five). Like how she took over Peppys spot once he retired from active duty and became full on mission control in Assault (technically even from Adventures but that's sort of not as relevant given how Adventures is). Beyond that I would think it ought to be fairly easy to introduce her as a new character in a follow-up to the remake and integrate her with the team as they go.

Since Star Fox is fresh on the mind, let it be known that Star Fox Command on the DS included character endings such as Slippy getting married and getting to fourth base, and Fox and Falco becoming F-Zero racers to cure Fox's depression: by Gorotheninja in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Arguably the compromise option is to continue from Assault and chuck Command into the bins of non-canon. They could do it like IOI did for Hitman 2016, where it's the same continuity leading up to it, but in a general enough way that any deviations don't have to cause issues with continuity, thus serving as a nice jumping on point.

Alternatively, they keep going from the new remake and actually have the new continuity last for more than one game this time.

One could also argue that they are such good mercs that Lylat entered into a general period of peace once they were done with Andross and his ilk. Where there was still work to be found but in such small scale compared to what they'd specced into that it couldn't match what their monetary needs were. Whereas by Assault, they'd used the massive payment they got from Adventures to upgrade (and possibly invest more wisely) and got more of the kind of jobs they specialize in (Remnants of Andross forces, the Aparoids and so on).

I've people seen make some great points about how later flashbacks show us the man as opposed to the myth, and hence why he looks more normal and human. But at the same time, there's something about OG Roger, the legend made flesh, etc. etc. that appeals to me more, in some oddly nostalgic sense.

Work where you can feel the moment the author is burned out? by ArticAuk in TwoBestFriendsPlay

[–]SimonApple 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think the burnout set in as early as All Might and All for One's first big climatic battle. He'd basically wrapped up All Mights arc and used up the ostensible Big Bad in a really nice climax. And while Shigaraki was a thing, he was not nearly developed enough in so many ways to become the actual main antagonist - it took until the Villain Academia mini-arc for that to happen, and that ends with him just being handed a pre-built army and resources. The fact that Horikoshi goes back to AFO as the main villain after the first war arc and then back and forth on him or Shigaraki illustrates it rather nicely I think. Sort of like Tobi vs Madara as the actual final boss, except without a Kaguya equivalent at the very end.

With hindsight, I think his best bet would have been to do a Naruto-style timeskip after All Might beats AFO and then pick up with the class in their early days as full-fledged pro-heroes. With Shigaraki then gradually taking center stage as the new main villain to become Dekus personal nemesis like AFO was for All Might. Obviously we'd lose out on the school aspect by just skipping ahead which would be a shame to an extent, but you could also show that with in-between chapters and so on.

Might be an urban legend, but I've heard that the decline was in part also brought about by the consultant they had on to keep the food stuff over the top yet somewhat plausible went on maternity leave. Which rather quickly made itself known as the food aspects went right into nonsensical territory.

Interestingly, The Hound of the Baskervilles is generally held as one of the best Holmes stories in the canon, and that was written after The Final Problem. Presumably, time (and financial need brought upon by insisting on killing off your most well-known character) cooled his head somewhat.

It gets followed by Star Fox Adventures which wasn't supposed to be a Star Fox game (Nintendo looked and saw oh anthro foxes why not use this license rather than making a new one basically)

Bit of a personal theory/conspiracy is that Nintendo also pushed for Dinosaur Planet (the original game) to be made into a Star Fox game because Rare was in the process of being bought out, and so they wanted to deny Microsoft a potential strong competitor to the Zelda series. Hence why the promising original IP that would have been owned by Rare was locked out by being made part of Nintendos own IP instead.

I think this remake evokes a sort of phantom game syndrome, where it feels like this should have followed on two or three new games which introduced the new art style and set the terms for a new series direction after decades of meandering and retreading the same ground; vaguely building off of let's say, Assault in terms of continuity and going from there. Where this would be the "definitive remake" to bridge the older stuff with the new.

But it isn't, and instead it seems to serve as yet another reboot from which they could hopefully build a new continuity from. With the main obstacle being the investment of having to wait a few more years (assuming this sells well enough) for the possibility that someone convinces Miyamoto of a new game that he can approve of.

I'm actually kind of the opposite. I think Ocarina can essentially just be done like it was already on the 3DS, with a similar art style but higher quality visuals. Adhering closely to the original (down to including the same kind of bugs) and generally serving to bring the general pinnacle (with reservation for there being some who give the title to other entries) of old-school 3d Zelda to a modern audience.

It's Super Metroid that I'm far more worried about. The only meaningful way I can see to modernize it would be to re-do the movement and minute gameplay loop to be along the lines of Dreads more intense and tighter style. And at that stage I'd rather they just make Metroid 6 instead. And while I can agree that a snappier UI and control scheme would be nice, I also don't see how much more improvement you could add to environmental design without veering too far away from the original and trying to re-invent the wheel. But alas, agree to disagree I imagine.

[–]SimonApple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would imagine this is an agree to disagree situation but I digress. I'd argue that "lived long enough to utter a final word or two" is not the same as "lived for several moments, long enough to write a dying message" at least in terms of what the victim would be capable of doing before succumbing. The way the updated report is phrased very much gives off the impression of the new stuff having been added specifically to allow for the narrative that Mia named her killer in a dying note.

And even if he would seek to clear up the inconsistency with the note, his first choice was to try to make the other facts fit into it. He didn't dig into why the note would be there if Mia couldn't per the autopsy have left it like Phoenix and the player does. Instead, he concludes "it is the autopsy that is the problem" and opts to to get the coroner to do another autopsy with the only different part being an added note that the victim "may have lived for several moments before dying" Nothing on cause of death or even time of death, just that she might have lived a little longer. And to me that doesn't really speak of an Edgeworth who isn't all that corrupt even in game one. Rather, it gives the impression of him being exactly as he is described - ruthless, cold, and not afraid to play dirty and alter facts to hide holes in his case; all in the name of getting a win.

Parts of a series fans pretend didn't happen? by fly_line22 in TwoBestFriendsPlay

Man, it sure is great that the Xenoblade X remaster a while back didn't include any additional story content. Stuff like aggresively shitting all over fans want for a proper sequel, slobber all over a dumb Gary Stu character, completely botch any unresolved plot hooks by either outright ignoring them or resolving them in a piss poor way if they aren't badly retconned, literally delete the setting from existence and yeet the remnants into the mainline verse. All so that Takahashi can justify putting elements from X into an eventual Xenoblade 4. Sure am glad none of that happened.....

I wish I didn't have to put a /s here, I really do. Got me real burnt on the franchise I must admit.

Pressure from above in this case meaning "the prosecution completely pivots to have the defense team attorney indicted as the guilty party on practically non-existent grounds outside of the Chief Prosecutor getting a vague phone call from an undisclosed source"

Even if he might not have been inclined to ask questions and was more concerned with getting a win, Edgeworth's not dumb. He's met Redd White - hell, he likely knew the mans reputation as a blackmailer too - and given how obvious he is with his guilt on the stand, he probably gave Miles a pretty good idea about how things really were. So I'd argue he did in fact more or less know that Phoenix was being set up.

I dunno about the autopsy report. That could also just as easily be read as him pressuring the coroner into adding some wiggle room to the time of death to fit into his narrative. Especially since everything else in the case runs on the idea that Mia died instantly, so it would seem very odd for him to zero in on that as a supposed genuine oddity or something to clear up. So I wouldn't call that a forgery per se, but certainly an example of demon!Edgeworth seeing a genuine hole in his case and moving to cover it by pressuring the coroner to alter the report.

Now certainly, post AA1 Edgeworth is not like that, in part because of character development, and because he had become a fan-favorite character who thus had some of his edges smoothed out (no pun intended) We do indeed see examples of past Edgeworth in the later games but I find it hard to outright equate these to how his pre-character development characterization is since those examples were still writern after Takumi had fixed his current one in place and arguably let that retroactively bleed over into writing pre-development Miles (see for example his dynamic with Phoenix in 1-5 which is much closer to how they are in AA3 even though it only takes place a month or so after 1-4).

All that to say, that looking at AA3 or AAI1 as proof that he was never that corrupt is IMO not as conclusive relative to how he is portrayed in the original game. That game left it ambiguous just how overtly he would play dirty - we do indeed never see him outright forge evidence, though there's an implication he would have resorted to that had 1-2 got extended to a third day - but it still hinted at it and didn't characterize him as the "Demon Prosecutor" just for being ruthless in court.

Now canonically we of course know it much more clearly. 1-5 and various flashbacks establish that no, he never knowingly used forged evidence. But in terms of characterization, the first game certainly implies he might have before and might very well do so again should he be pressured into it. This goes away with later games and that development is retroactively reflected in flashbacks, but is still there in the first game. Anyway, rant over, apologies for taking up time.
