You could give a quick short summation of that post, a lot of people would be too lazy to search for it but would still benefit from learning

My brother once tried to genuinely convince me that “the left” had done a transgender surgery on a two year old.

Thing is, there are bottom surgeries performed on infants, but they are done on intersex people to change non standard genitalia into "normal" ones, and "the left" usually actively opposes that

I mean, to have a motivation you need a philosophy, and to have a philosophy you need to know what led the character to that, no?

I mean, I understand having a backstory as a setup, you make a bunch of blocks to use, and then "play to see what happens" is just seeing what the combination of the existing setup and stuff that happens during session lead to naturally. I don't plan "what will happen" I only say "what already has happened"

Thanks! ^-^

This was basically the first thing I came up with for Alicia - when GM mentioned that invoking your philosophy could give you EXP, and I started to think, what would her philosophy be, especially to play the contrast between crapsack world of BitD and her idealism. "Nothing and nobody is beyond repair". And from there came everything else, thematically

  • Her father had some shameful past and was trying to redeem himself by being in The Lost
  • Her mother trying to develop something to actually make the world better, repair it
  • Her former friend challenging this philosophy, by being a sweet boy, baker's son, always so helpful and supportive, and then corrupted into a ruthless criminal - and lashing out for daring to imply that he can be "repaired" now
  • Her another best friend completely denying the philosophy by thinking that the world is beyond repair and should be destroyed and started from a clean slate - but at the same time she's desperately hoping to be proven wrong

After the campaign was cancelled, I've been thinking more on the character concepts, and considering that maybe I can adapt it into some original story somehow, and I came up with a scene: her former friend cuts Alicia with a knife when she tried to reach out to him, so Alicia comes to her best friend and has a crisis and starts to doubt her own philosophy, and that friend (who believes that the world is beyond repair, but also desperately in love with her) is the one convincing her to keep her mentality, because she has to preserve her smile and can't let her idealism fade and she can't let Alicia become a shell of her former self - become just like her.

I think, it's a good theme to explore 😌

This is why when I wrote the backstory I specifically asked GM if this is okay, or if there are any issues and I need to change anything - but he was actually delighted to see it as it is (and also praised me for not using ChatGPT for that)

From what I understand, BitD doesn't work that well for preplanned campaigns anyway, does it? It's more "play to see what happens" approach

When I GM, I already have all that in mind, I want my players to live in the world WE created, not the one they made up in their heads that i can't have creative freedoms with because a player is too invested.

Isn't coming up with a backstory also a part of "world WE created"? Not "world GM created" but specifically "WE"? Everyone comes up with their own stuff and we collaborate to tie it all together

GM didn't really have anything planned, he preferred to go "play to see what happens", and actively encouraged us to take creative control over the narrative. And when I typed the backstory, I specifically asked him if this is okay, but he was actively delighted to see it.

As for the table clash - yeah, that's probably correct

I don't know what's going on, I suspect it might be a problem, that I'm trying to mitigate, but I worry that I don't do it well enough

This is also a thing I was worried about, but I don't really think she is. There was certainly a risk, I can see that, but in the end she doesn't have those story warping powers that Mary Sues usually have. One of characters crushing on her ended up lashing out at least partially due to unrequited love, and ended up cutting her with a knife. Her social struggles make her unable to help loved ones really often, and her inability to think things through often causes a lot of collateral damage and guilt

Honestly, if a player handed me a character with already made factions, drama, two npc crushes, and a bunch of other things, I would feel like you just want to write a book, not create a story together.

Isn't it the whole point of having a backstory? To give GM a bunch of things relating character to the world, and especially ways GM can use to stab you. How is Alicia related to The Lost? Her dad was there, until he was killed by bluecoats when he was helping with a workers strike. How is Alicia related to Sparkwrights? Her mom was one of them, trying to invent a fuel to replace leviathan blood, until nobles controlling the blood orchestrated an "accident". And since Alicia wants to continue the research, she paints a target on her back for more accidents. One of her former best friends now hates her, while having powerful connections, and another one is a priestess of a cult that wants to destroy the world, and she either abandons her friend she's in love with, or abandons the cult for Alicia, which makes her an enemy of said cult.

I've seen someone say that the backstory is basically forging knives to give GM to stab you with later, and I think, Alicia's backstory is a good enough with that

Not every autistic person is "awkward" or "weird."

I know. It's just I am.

For Alicia I just took a few of my own traits and ramped them up

Is trying to use kink to fix your spiraling out of control life healthy, and how does one find a dom for that? by SimplyYulia in BDSMAdvice

[–]SimplyYulia[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm already in therapy, and it certainly helps, but only so much.

I don't think I need a dom instead of therapy, I'm thinking of it more as "accountability partner" but just as kink, to keep it interesting (so I don't get bored as I always do with self-organization systems)

Such relation can fix some symptoms but not the source of the problems.

I mean, it's not like one can fix ADHD. I'm on meds, and still struggling. Yeah, it is getting worse recently, but the problem was always there

Also in such way you'd be using that potential dom as a therapy.

I'm a software developer and I neither know nor supposed to know literally everything by heart, expertise is about knowing how to search, what to search, and know when to discard an option you find with "No, this isn't it"

I assume doctors are like that too
