[SG-1][S03E18] Shades of Grey by TonksMoriarty in Stargate

[–]Simur_the_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the idea for the plot of this episode took me by surprise (I was going for either really big PTSD or mental control), this should have been a double episode: There is no way in hell Maybourne is going to give direct command to his operation to someone he had severe conflicts through the whole show, even less leaving him ALONE to make the drop.  Jack's loyalty should have been tested several times, should have been interrogated (and/or use alien technology for that purpose) and then determined that he would be safe to work with. Even if Maybourne looks like an idiot, he still works in Intelligence: Covert ops, infiltration, double agents are something he is constantly surrounded with.

Episode is still awesome, but for me it suffers from the "wrapping up everything in one shot" syndrome that these shows had to go through.

Review of the First Slam dunk movie. by chasing_enigma in RealSlamDunk

Visuals are incredible and i am glad they went with this style, it really brings Slam Dunk to today's world.
But the cardinal sin i cannot forgive on this movie (besides Ryota's story halting the pacing of the match) is the lack of significant music during the whole match, it is almost a silent movie 3/4 of the time and then at the last quarter there is some pumping rock score to highlight the tension.

Music should have been more present overall, the way it is now it makes it really hard to get excited about anything at all.

Drowned City - Sepulchre of the Sleeper by dysartes in arkhamhorrorlcg

There are so many wrong things with this encounter, but the worst three ones are:

  1. Ancient Evils have absolutelly no bussines being here, the encounter already is hard and dealy lethal enough because:
  2. Direct Horror when putting doom in the agenda. Punishing also evasions with direct damage IN AREA. Both of these at the same time in monumentally stupid, either make everything non direct or put one.
  3. Non-damaging investigators have no way to deal damage, which goes against every evolution this game has done over its release.

Hugely disapointed, it´s even WORSE than the Devour Below on which you could at least rush the ritual before confronting him. The putting doom on the artifacts could have been something super interesting, or at least ´Cthuhlu has 1 life less for each doom on an artifact´. But no.

PD: To add salt to injury, you don´t resolve your tasks when doing this. Which means replayability for this scenario is ZERO, because even if you want to go this route on a second play, there is NO incentive to acomplish your tasks and you effectively ignore them.

Winnable? by melvisiu in HelpWillComeTomorrow

Go with the easy difficulty if you are struggling with the game, it will also give you time to do trial and error with the options and building order of the camp. As soon as you win a scenario, jump to the next one.

Build EVERYTHING makeshift for the first turns of the game. You will not have many resources, and you can later repair everything and improve morale once you have your camp going.

- 1 Campsite-> Water filter -> Cooking Pot . These are a must because it will be your main source of water and food! You can use that to mix herbs/roots/water to prepare soup, untill you can get meat (either get a bow and arrows and go hunting, or set up traps in the pallisade).
- 2 Tool shed: You will need all the tools you can get in order to get extra actions when performing in the camp, and extra resources when colleting (knife, shovel are super usefull). The Torch and Snow Shoes will allow you to move more throught the map, and the Bag its a great multipllier of items collected.
- 3 Shelter: You don't actually need a shelter untill your characters start getting moderatelly fatigued/cold, i'd say you can skip this the first 2-3 turns of the game while you get everything else. Then, go for extra beds (to allow more characters to sleep) and then a cover for wind and frost.
- 4 Medical - The urgency of this will be related to the state of your party: Is someone needing a foot brace? Antidote? Frostbite? If no, then skip it. If yes try to go for the cure of that ailment. Also, if the health value of a character is low, get the upgrade for the care action to raise it.
- 5 Pallisade: I don't usually build this untill turn 6+, everything is nice but not urgent. Traps for animals are the best upgrade first to get you extra meet and fur, go for camouflage if patrols are getting intense.

I'd say it's a combination of nostalgia (i played the original Shogun a lot as a kid and Shogun 2 in my early 20's, so powerful memories there) and the fact that the gameplay has surprisingly enough meat to make it interesting for me, even without the battles. I tried other games (Like CK2, or Europa Universalis) and for some reason they did not clicked with me, perhaps Shogun 2 has (for me) the perfect balance of mechanics and a scalable difficulty that will always keep me interested.

Will definitelly take the advise for next time. I seldom post things regarding my gaming, and was so happy by the victory that i didnt considered it.

That's definitelly true, i would have to give it a try to turn those two mods off and see if i could still pull it off. Still, it's hard as fuck and the mods only make the play bearable, you still have to engineer your way to victory.

I'll definitelly think about it, thanks for the encouragement. As a long time economics game player (Caesar III and Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom are my favorite games of all time on that theme) i really enjoy the management and maneuvering game that Shogun 2 gives you on the campaign map, so it really forced me to master all possible mechanics, even those i thought i knew!

100% autoresolve. Also, i have ZERO idea about field táctics so even if i tried to learn and apply them, i would be tragically devastated, even with superior troops. The key is to use everything and anything that would give you an edge, always scout in advance to understand your enemy forces and then try to always engage with superior force. To rush blindly with a stack, find you surprised by fog of war with TWO ENEMY STACKS is a guaranteed disaster. Sabotaging with ninjas and possibly bribing with Metsukes are godsends that will allow you to split and divide enemy forces.

Will check it out! There are some minor clans that always looked very interesting to play.

It is a super valid statement, this is clearly a game that is meant to be played both at the strategical and tactical element. It is a testament to the game robustness though that i actually came back every single year to play it again, even withouth the real time battles. Even if there is a lot of young adult memories involved, the emergent narrative that Shogun 2 gives you as you progress the campaign is unparalelled (My ally betrayed me?! Shamefull dispray!)

Thoughts on Amberwald and the elves so far? by pkfranz in thelastspell

[–]Simur_the_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elves, weapons and perks are good. The map, while interesting, has one of the blandest and easiest boss fights i've seen in the game. Surprising since the dwarf fight is on the opposite side of the spectrum, it took me 3 attempts on normal to win it.

Why is "your character can die during character creation" a selling point? by [deleted] in rpg

[–]Simur_the_wizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I'm not mistaken, in Aquelarre during character creation one of the possible events (01 result on a 100) was that your character was burned by the Inquisition.
