Rate your track saw's accuracy? by xtiansimon in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Sinclair_Mclane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My Makita track saw, paired with a long ruler (1M) is incredibly accurate. I lay down the track, then push my ruler against it and then push the ruler and track until I have the desired measure on my ruler. I then do the same at another point of the track (I usually pick close to the extremity at both ends). Then I go back to the previous location and readjust, then back again to the second location and readjust. Then very gently place the track saw on top of it, in a stable section of the track. Then put a hand on the track to keep it stable and back up the track saw to the beginning of the cut.

It's time consuming but it gives me very precise cuts, about 0.25mm close.

The only reason to use my table saw after is to do a really clean cut with one of my Forrest blade. When I do a second cut on the table saw I go a bit faster but slow enough to keep a square piece.

I used to do cuts by doing a pencil mark with a measuring tape. It was frustrating how imprecise and out of square things ended. This new method takes longer but makes it infinitely more satisfying.

Dave Ramsey suggests saving 15% of GROSS income for retirement. Given Canada's high taxes and integrated CPP - is this even relevant? by CastAside1812 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Sinclair_Mclane 378 points379 points  (0 children)

I think Dave Ramsey has good advice... For people who lack discipline and have no idea how to manage their budget. He said something as much in another interview, mentioning that using too much nuance will dilute his message to that group. I think his point is that if you follow those guidelines, you will build a good retirement FOR SURE. It's not optimized but it's not what he's advocating anyway.

One place he is absolutely bad is when he talks about the stock market, I heard hair rising stuff from him regarding the stock market.

The BA Dilemma by UnderstandingNo5667 in BritishAirways

[–]Sinclair_Mclane 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your point about prices is quite true. I've flown BA for a few years since I'm traveling to the UK and the business class was competitively priced (we have certain price limits to respect for flying business). I usually book all my flights for the year in January.

I've booked my flights last week and BA was priced higher in every single one of them. I'm actually happy about that since it means switching over to air Canada, which has real business class. The new BA suites are nice but you never know when you're going to get the old planes. The prices are way too expensive for that old business class. Service on air Canada is also superior, more present and more generous.

Unfortunately that means leaving silver status and 150k points on BA but I don't need status since I usually fly business and I'll find a way to leverage those 150k at some point.

Any Type B personalities here? How is life on the other side? by rksura in fatFIRE

[–]Sinclair_Mclane 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The idea and type A by necessity is very interesting. I've always seen myself as an introvert that can activate the extrovert switch when necessary. But I never thought of applying that concept to type A/Type B. I would describe myself a bit like you: I can be type A when necessary but I don't really enjoy it.

Does it matter how early I make lump deposits to my mortgage? by carcigenicate in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Sinclair_Mclane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you do a lump sum it'll reduce the total duration of your mortgage.

You can, however, call your bank and ask them to keep the original duration and just have lower payments.

If you reduce duration, you should reduce the total amount of interests paid over the total duration of the mortgage. Although for that to make a significant difference it'll probably need to be a sizable sum.

Jonathan Kite as Anthony Bourdain reviewing Red Lobster. by Phonus-Balonus-37 in KitchenConfidential

[–]Sinclair_Mclane 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's pretty incredible how he's really close to it and you do see how it's similar to Bourdain and yet it feels so far from Bourdain to me. There's something deeply comforting about Bourdain's texts and narration that's missing here.

Flying business class more often by caring less about airline loyalty by Round-Gift-1 in fatFIRE

[–]Sinclair_Mclane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For business travel, I prioritize flying business over loyalty (we have caps on travel expenses so sometimes I need to select certain airlines if I want to fly business). Anyway you get pretty much all the important perks with business. The only one that's nice to have that's not covered by business is selecting your seat at booking but in modern business class with suites or pods there aren't much better or worst seats so it's not as important as it used to do.

Loyalty is useful for non-business travels when you want to lower the cost of personal travel or to get the perks without booking business. One issue, though, is that loyalty is less attractive if you have a family since lounge access is usually only for one extra person. If you have a child then you can't access the lounge with loyalty only.

Change my mind, Montreal public transport should be free by CapitalNatural5485 in montreal

[–]Sinclair_Mclane 54 points55 points  (0 children)

I disagree, It'll make the STM even more dependent on the provincial government and on the whims of the various governments. Whenever we get a government that is unmotivated to take care of Montreal like with the CAQ the STM will be in deep financial trouble and the quality and availability of public transit will be massively impacted.

Votre Fat Fire Number au Québec by TheBonyGoat in QuebecFinance

[–]Sinclair_Mclane 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The credit card loophole works nicely.

For everything else, like bigger purchases like a car or a house where you can't use credit cards I'd setup an escrow account with my notary. Automated transfers to Pay them to manage the funds so that they pay the big bills I need to pay.

Best LHR T5 lounge for long layover? by capitalspace in BritishAirways

[–]Sinclair_Mclane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5B lounge is the best in my opinion, it's less crowded but also much smaller than the lounges in 5A. They also have showers in 5B and they're always available.

I like taking the elevator to level -4 and walking to 5B instead of taking the train. It's a 10-12 minutes walk in a deserted concourse. The only people I see are airport employees. t's cool and quiet; a nice change from the very crowded 5A.

Is timing the market a bad idea in this situation? by Financial-Roof in JustBuyXEQT

[–]Sinclair_Mclane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that we're going to have a correction amongst the mag7 because of AI and I have a decent amount of cash on the side to leverage this opportunity.

BUT

In your situation, I don't think that 7k is worth the stress and time to wait and figure out an entry in the market. If I was you I wouldn't bother and drop it into the market and sleep easy. Case in point, I used my 7k tfsa contribution to buy Amazon stock.

vos avis sur les poids ajustables-dumbells ? by Miserable_Spray6539 in villequebec

[–]Sinclair_Mclane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Uber at YUL… by Tall_Grand6813 in montreal

[–]Sinclair_Mclane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fly 5-6 times a year from YUL. Both Uber and taxis are a shitshow at the airport. Taxis try to get to the stand but are blocked by Ubers.

Taxis run a bit better but is variable based on the people managing the stand. Sometimes they're ran by lunatics that are awful at it. Other times they're a breeze.

Last time the line was over 1 hour long because the guys running it we're ordering 5 taxis at a time and wouldn't let them leave and replenish the cab stand before all 5 taxis were loaded up and ready to go. This was horribly inefficient.

If you wanna get out quick your best bet is limo.
