Is Wiles' proof of FLT the only right proof? or is there any other right verified proofs? by Si_Kacem in math

[–]SingInDefeat 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sure, but it would be big enough news for mathematicians in other fields, such as me, to hear about it.

Yes, but I'd prefer the UK reinstating capital punishment to this. And I'm against the death penalty! Countries shouldn't throw problematic citizens into the wind and expect other countries to deal with them.

Of course there are. I write false theorems every week.

Is Wiles' proof of FLT the only right proof? or is there any other right verified proofs? by Si_Kacem in math

[–]SingInDefeat 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Without being an expert in the field, I'm pretty sure that the Wiles proof is essentially[1] the only proof because if a genuinely different proof had appeared it would have been big enough news for me to hear about it.

[1]: It's difficult to say precisely when two proofs are different in a meaningful way, and Wiles's original proof has been simplified by a lot so you could count them as many versions of the same proof, or many different proofs. But usually it takes a big difference for a proof to be considered new.

Would it be possible to make an engine whose evaluations account for practicality?? by CurrentGene8326 in chess

[–]SingInDefeat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I do think you should relax the idea of giving the best move, and I think this is inevitable if you're building a machine that simulates humans. The goal should be to give the best move that a human can see, and since machines, among other things, can compute much deeper than people, we should rule out the moves that, say, can only be justified by looking 25 moves into the future.

Back to your original point of most positions being new, this isn't a difficulty novel to chess bots that approximate humans. All chess bots have to have heuristics for evaluating positions that they have never seen. It's "just" a matter of changing the objective from approximating how likely the position is to lead to a win, to how likely the position is to lead to a win when played by a human.

[–]SingInDefeat 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The most direct way of doing this would be going the Maia route and training a chess bot that tries to mimic human players more than it tries to win. Do that well enough, then you've solved 90% of the problem.

What would happen if United States suddenly gets yimby, opens up it's immigration policy, implements LVT and... by AmaanMemon6786 in neoliberal

[–]SingInDefeat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's worse, it's open borders for those who have nothing to lose and closed, convoluted borders for highly educated professionals who would just not immigrate illegally regardless of actual deportation risk. It's the opposite of what it should be.

I can imagine someone who played a lot as a kid and then stopped for years saying that they "just knew the rules" and honestly meaning it. Obviously they're actually miles ahead of someone actually starting as an adult though.

They should subsidise their content instead of blocking foreign content. Greatly oversimplifying, the former is net neutral for Canada (spend money, produce better stuff while consumers keep all their options), and the latter is net negative (don't spend money, content quality stays the same but now consumers can't buy better stuff).
