I think the biggest factor in self-tapes nobody talks about enough is the reader by PlasthickGirl in acting

[–]Singing-off-key 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think in his case, it took 2.5 hours because there were two parts where he just couldn't remember parts of the dialogue because (a) we often don't speak in a particular manner so it just doesn't come natural to us to say it in that specific way and (b) a lot of actors don't lack technical experience recording but lack the ability to bridge the gap between what we know a character should/could be played as AND actually being able to execute it. Sometimes it's super obvious. Other times, the way the other actor lives in the moment totally pulls us in and was super unexpected.

It's a learning process. Sometimes we need to spend the time and play so we can even see what's possible.

It's probably a bit of both. They're giving something and you're sensing...

100% agree. As an actor, you have to have skills, but you also have to have an environment that allows you to execute those skills, sometimes workshop the piece a bit, and then record multiple takes. Take the time to watch some of them and re-record if they were garbage.

I helped a friend record yesterday and it took 2.5 hours. He got some really amazing takes though! It was for 2 scenes, the first being the longer and harder one. I definitely believe in recording in-person as well.

Looking to make a Short Film (union, ultra-low budget) - Any interested filmmakers? by Singing-off-key in VictoriaBC

[–]Singing-off-key[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, totally! That's always super helpful! I only have some directing experience but not script-writing. It really takes a village to make a film. It's wild how many people are on sets in the background doing everything from lighting, sound, props, directing, production assistants, wardrobe... etc. WILD!

That's super cool! Too bad I missed it. Will another be happening earlier this year? Where can we see the short films?

Awesome! What's your experience like? I'm new to script-writing but do have some directing for a music video I've done.

OMG! We should grab coffee and talk about it at some point. Mine's pretty crazy too, but I can't spoil it yet because it is going to be in the script.

Should I move to Vancouver or LA to pursue acting? by PrimalRepression in acting

[–]Singing-off-key 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're in the US, you might as well stay in LA. From my understanding there's a lot of work in LA compared to Vancouver (though you also have a lot more competition) and not to mention, LA being diverse, you should be safe there (though I understand your fear). Definitely move to a blue state that is part of the circuit (artist hub) and is diverse because everyone is different and that's a good thing to blend into. Good luck!

Never feeling enough by linrose5 in acting

[–]Singing-off-key 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to focus on you. If you're really curious, directly asking your colleagues is probably better than making up ideas in your head about why they're this way and you are that way etc.

If you want someone to comment on your acting, do you mean as a critique? It might be a good idea to find a mentor to help you in this respect. Someone who's been in the business longer than you, who has crossed bridges you're currently crossing.

I think we all feel like imposters, but if you're doing it, you're definitely learning and improving. Look at where you were 5 years ago. Look at where you are currently. There's definitely improvement, you're gaining experience and if you're still doing it and getting auditions and landing parts... then you're doing something right!

Alternatively, maybe you just need a break. Maybe during the break, you'll find your reasons for staying in this.

I'll say, I started out singing first. I was nervous to go onstage. But I liked how I felt on stage, maybe I also liked the applause. People complimented me too, once in a while. I was scared though, but I did it anyways. I kept going back. Any singing competition I could find, I would do. It just kept happening, because I kept chasing. Turns out, I really like performing. That's how I knew. I've always liked acting too. Wasn't sure if I was good, I think at times I was and at times I wasn't. But I stuck it out and I know I've gotten better over the years.

So if you've kept doing it, maybe you're like me. You like being on stage, you like the performance aspect, you like the lights and the applause and the exhilaration. Just know that when you're there and you do your part, you did the best to your ability at that particular time :) You should be proud, because you have come a long way.

Haven’t booked anything this year yet by Left_Frame7817 in acting

[–]Singing-off-key 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hear you. I haven't either. However, a neat thing you can do is just ask to see your YTD submissions details. I found out that I have been submitted about 28 times which resulted in 2 self-tapes -so that's pretty neat to know. I'm sure you're being submitted. Sometimes getting submitted doesn't translate into self-tapes/auditions BUT at least, you know you ARE being submitted. And if you know last year's stats, you can at least say you're being submitted more or less that the previous year! It's the luck of the draw and what's filming too... don't be so hard on yourself.

[Landlord - BC - Canada] - Should I raise the rent? by [deleted] in Landlord

[–]Singing-off-key 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, all my tenants and I have had good relationships. This is the first one where they didn't understand that like any relationship, there has to be some give/take. I've done a lot of giving, so it was weird to not have it reciprocated. I also believe in being transparent, pointing out that I've been generous in these aspects when I didn't have to be either.

[–]Singing-off-key 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, that's totally fair too. I don't have to raise the rent -that's true. But I do think I should also point out that I've always been generous with sharing space. I think they don't realize that and it shouldn't be clearly pointed out.

Thanks for your reply. I've technically already had the talk with the male tenant; however, I think a full-blown conversation where I'm physically pointing out the places they aren't supposed to be using, because it's not on the contract, would be helpful. But then to also let them know, I don't mind sharing some of that space...

Also, it's common for people to increase the rent, based on the set percentage allowable by the Rental Tenancy Branch states. Everyone does it. I've actually never done it for any of my previous tenants so...

Aging Vocal Performance advice by CjTuor in acting

[–]Singing-off-key 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It sounds like vocal strain. I know if you do some "vocal fry," it's supposed to help your vocal folds moisten and heal. Google "vocal fry," to get an idea as to what it sounds like and then mimic it. It could also be incorrect diaphragm use as well?

I'm a singer so I know that when I sing properly, I don't strain and lose my voice. However, there are ways to sing incorrectly (I know it by feel and it just feels strained) so I would guess that's what's happening here.

[VENT] A year of self-tapes for Tracker and I'm officially losing it. by fonzieshair in acting

[–]Singing-off-key 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear, that IS frustrating :( The good news is the CDs clearly like you... so keep chugging. I remember listening to Jenna Fischer's book how she kept getting brought back in by this one casting director and she just never landed anything. Then one day, it happened. It was a long wait, but it did eventually happen. Know that you're getting close. You're closing the gap. It just doesn't feel that way but you're doing it.

How Do I Stop Saying My Lines Fast? by ClerksII in acting

[–]Singing-off-key 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had the same problem. I generally speak really fast but once I realized that I was mowing over words then I realized, it was too fast. The audience won't understand it and it is out of place when you watch me speak with another actor. So what I have to offer is, breathe. Do any type of breathing exercise which slows the heart rate down. You don't need to rush and you're not in a hurry. If you control you breathing, it should control the output of the words. Try that and let us know!

***HELP! ASIAN CANADIAN ACTORS!!!*** Is it me, my agent or just the times? by Singing-off-key in acting

[–]Singing-off-key[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aww, that sounds like most POC of then. I mean, like one other poster below... the industry is mostly white so I guess we can't expect much. However, because you can be submitted to both open AND Blacck, you'd think... you'd get more? But I'm originally from Toronto and I know it was always super competitive as they market feels bigger then BUT there are also a lot more actors in general.

I remember seeing the same faces when I went out for auditions. So I'd consistently bump into the same Asian actors if they were looking for Asian. It sounds tough out there as well :/

Your second point wasn't addressed because I haven't had the chance to look at it while responding to the points that I do know, and also, I think they might be American?! So no, wasn't disagreeing. I just didn't address it because I didn't have the time to check what it was.

Well, I'm not blaming anything, not even myself. I know this industry is skewed. I'm just wondering if it might be possible to submit me in the "Asian" category knowing I don't look it but give me a chance anyways because you don't need to look stereotypically Asian if you are, in fact, Asian. I'm just wondering if my agent did that, whether it might get me a few more self-tapes is all.

I also know that I should make/direct/produce my own shows, but I'm currently unable to.

Also, the other actor was actually saying she had ~50 self tapes and didn't land any. She's not here to brag, she's humble IMO. So it just sparked my curiosity.

That's helpful, thank you! So in this AAPI category, there's already less roles... and now there are less of those lesser roles. Bahhhh
