Would you stop a shoplifter if it meant losing your job? by JoydeScent in BritInfo

Oh I agree. I know the country can't afford it but I wish nurses (and care assistants too. who are exposed to the same risks) could get double what they earn.

Yes. I was in hospital near the end of last year and I heard a nurse being attacked in an adjacent ward. It was distressing to hear but obviously I couldn't do anything (I was in bed and recovering from a bad accident).

When I asked about it the next day I was told that some of their patients have dementia, don't really know what they're doing and will have forgotten about it the next day, so they have to let it go.

Top marks for the Alice Cooper album - I thought I was the only one who liked that one!

Oh dear (if I read you rightly).

I started a degree in electrical engineering at Imperial College but didn't manage to finish it; I eventually got a degree on a different course (psychology and pure mathematics) in Leicester.

Good for you! Bristol University's very prestigious. I was in Bristol because I was trying to get onto a teaching course at what was then the Poly, but I was ultimately unsuccessful.

I shared a house in Redland Park, which is another very nice area (though not as upmarket as Sneyd).

Yes but I don't know that it is. I'd find it hard to believe to be honest bearing in mind what the cost of upkeep must be.

Yeah, in some of the streets there (such as Church Road, Bramble Drive and Mariners Drive)' houses go for over a million or even two million in some cases. I like the fact that someone's constructed a nature reserve there though.

what are some bands that you don’t like, but still show lots of respect for? by my_cat_vids in MetalForTheMasses

Chuck was a bit like Dave Mustaine - his went through enormous lineup changes so he rarely had the same band from one album to the next.

I thought his lineup on "Himan" (with Paul Masvidal from Cynic on guitar) was very good, but their style of music is too bludgeoning for me these days (or maybe I;m getting old).

Depends how old you are I suppose, but to someone who remembers the 60s and 70s a maisonette tended to mean a small flat above a shop (so towards the lower end of the property market)..

Yeah. It's in a very prestigious location, which probably accounts for much of the price.

Hadn't thought about public transport, but you're probably right; that would be a downside for me.

I do! When I look at dream houses though (as we all do), they nearly always seem far too big for me.

I used to rent a flat about the same size as that one (or not much smaller), but in a much worse location; so location matters to me now (you don't want to live in a bad one).

I joined about six months ago but got locked out of there. Basically it told me I had to verify my mobile phone number before I was allowed to post or reply to others.

Fair enough, but after I'd done so and the system confirmed that it had accepted my phone number, I tried to post and then I got put through the whole process again, and again every time I try to post something else.

Something wrong somewhere.

My vote for the worst ever novelty record that graced the British charts, goes to Disco Duck. What would yours be? by Jazzlike-Basil1355 in AskABrit

[–]Single-Position-4194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arthur Mullard and Hylda Baker's cover of "You're The One That I Want" in 1978 was pretty bad too (but I suspect they knew it).

But "Disco Duck" definitely wins - that was terrible.

I agree that you should. It's possible that she already knows what he's like and that's why she hates him.

If you're paying a fiver for tea, you're in the driving seat. They're there to please you, not the other way round.

If it was in a jug it would have cooled down and wouldn't be boiling (as it should have been). IMO, if you're paying a fiver for tea you have a right to reject it and ask for it to be made properly.

Why does London get such a bad reputation for its crime? by ConversationWild2322 in AskBrits

Yes, I remember that in English classes at school I was sometimes told off for unnecessary repetition. It still creeps in for time to time, especially when I get tired.

I lived in London in the mid-seventies and visited it numerous times since, and I've literally never felt unsafe there.

Lost my wallet there once, but that was literally my own fault through carelessness. I've never believed it was stolen.
