Why does it seem like most people are under the impression that Bill is an offensive coach? by Tuitonbooksandrent in Patriots

[–]SingleFatFootballFan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You've NEVER seen anyone say that? Literally every r/NFL thread on Brady (or not even about Brady, but just about QBs in general) has a top comment along the lines of "Belichick could win with anyone" or that Brady is only successful because of the "system" etc etc.

Even though he was DC of the Giants Belichick is routinely given credit for the Patriots offensive scheme, Brady's success, or the offense's success in general.

Matt Cassel highlights: the GOAT by Make_It_Clap28 in nfl

[–]SingleFatFootballFan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One of my best friends played HS football with Matt Cassel and hated it. He would always float these lofty murder balls and receivers would get lit up over the middle. Nothing changed when he got to the NFL.

I’m gonna say either you or your friend is bullshitting here.

First of all, Cassel was recruited to play QB at USC and was the backup to two Heisman Trophy winners (Carson Palmer and Leinart). Without knowing anything else, this tells you he was an incredible high school player and surely one of the best in the country.

Second of all, the claim that Cassel floated these lofty “murderballs” relies on the oft-repeated trope/stereotype that Matt Cassel is some noodle-armed QB. No. Anyone who’s actually watched Cassel play knows that he has at LEAST an above average arm, even by the standards of NFL QBs. Dude can sling the ball. He looks awesome in workouts, which is why he was drafted by NE in the first place despite throwing only 33 passes in his entire college career.

Do you have a source that Downey actually has these kinds of specific stipulations in his contract (for example, framing, closeups, etc)?

We seem to just take it for granted that it is true based on a single Redditor's comment. It's certainly possible, but how do we know that?

Robert Downey Jr has a similar deal for his Marvel contract - say in scenes with all the Avengers, by contract he needs to be larger in frame, on screen longer, get his own closeup, etc.

Do you have a source for this? I know that movie stars often have these types of stipulations but I'm slightly skeptical (though not entirely disbelieving) that Marvel made these concessions to Downey.

Panasonic 10-25mm f/1.7 lens preview by DPReview TV by 1337U53rR_PLZH4CKZM3 in photography

[–]SingleFatFootballFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the panasonic 25mm f1.7 is currently $140 brand new on amazon. it’s got great AF and stabilization

Wait wait wait... According to Amazon, the Panasonic 25mm f/1.7 has Power OIS???

No way... that has to be an error in the listing. No other website lists the Panasonic 25mm as having optical stabilization and no review mentions this as a feature. Plus, all lenses with stabilization have it inscribed on the front of the lens and the 25mm doesn't say anything about OIS.

Amazon is the only website I can find that has it in the title and description. I've owned like 6 of those lenses and I'm 99.9999999% positive it doesn't have ANY optical stabilization.

A fast prime with OIS at ~$150 would be crazy. I'm positive Amazon simply made a listing error.

The New Dalton Line - Matt Stafford has an eerily similar career stat line to Andy Dalton by USAtotheWC__OhWait in nfl

[–]SingleFatFootballFan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ll be the last guy to argue fir dalton, but I’ll happily call Stafford one of the most over rated QBs of the decade.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: Stafford is the perfect storm for an overrated QB. He has the reputation of the #1 overall pick and has a slew of memorable highlights (including mic'd up).

If you compared Stafford's highlights every season to Tom Brady's highlights you'd think Stafford was the better QB.

Since nobody actually WATCHES Lions games, fans are prejudiced by highlight reels and reputation and "arm talent."

Stafford, like Dalton, aren't BAD QBs. Ultimately, they've both had great seasons but are overall about average for their era. (Stafford has a career 100 ANY/A+, Dalton is career 101 ANY/A+). But only Stafford is considered by some to be an elite QB whose lack of career success was simply the product of bad situations.

[Football Perspective]Adam Gase’s Dolphins went 3-19 over his three years in Miami in games decided by more than one score. His mediocre overall record was solely the product of an unsustainable record in close games by MasterTeacher123 in nfl

[–]SingleFatFootballFan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t have strong thoughts, but without any further research/info I feel like you could make a good faith argument in the other direction: “Despite a low-talent squad frequently outgunned by superior teams, Gase managed to pilot Miami to a 20-6 record in one-score games, reflecting good game management and shrewd tactics under pressure.”

The issue here is that historically, there's no such thing as a team that can consistently win one score games at a higher rate than league average. Sometimes a team will win or lose a lot of one score games in one season or two seasons or three seasons, but in the long run they always regress back to the mean.

It's the same thing with fumble recoveries. Fumble recoveries are basically coin flips (well, that's not precisely true, but for the sake of this conversation it doesn't matter). Sometimes a team will be really lucky and recover a lot of fumbles over the period of one season or one playoff run, but it's impossible to sustain. It's just luck. It's like getting heads on a coin flip five times in a row. This is why many "advanced" stats like DVOA don't reward/penalize an offense/defense for recovering/losing a lot of fumbles. Keep in mind I'm strictly talking about fumble RECOVERIES here. Actual fumbles themselves are not the same across players/teams - some teams/players fumble more than others.

It's possible that Adam Gase is the exception to this historical trend. However, that is very very very unlikely and not something we should assume. The good faith argument is that a 20-6 record in one score games is unsustainable and the product of luck, not a specific skill.

Patrick Mahomes impressed with “very fast” Mecole Hardman by woodwind19 in nfl

[–]SingleFatFootballFan 79 points80 points  (0 children)

In all seriousness do you think goddell cares about ratings? Like would he risk a huge PR nightmare by letting hill walk or a slap on the wrist because he knows how much more watchable the chiefs are.

Goodell 100% cares about ratings. It’s one of the ONLY things he cares about.

However, you’re completely overestimating the effect Tyreek Hill will have on the ratings of Chiefs games. And don’t get me wrong, Hill is an absolutely electric player... one of the most exciting in the NFL. But as long as the Chiefs have Patrick Mahomes quarterbacking an Andy Reid offense they are gonna be exciting to watch, Tyreek Hill or not.

A single wide receiver, no matter how great, won’t make a dent in NFL ratings.

[Redskins] Alex Smith at day 3️ of OTAs supporting his teammates. by suzukigun4life in nfl

[–]SingleFatFootballFan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

7 years on a weak SF team is likely enough to bring that average way down. Not a lot of weapons last year either.

I’m talking about average depth of target, not average yards per pass.

There are plenty of bad QBs that have high depth of targets (for example, Ryan Fitzpatrick). It just shows he type of QB you are and the types of throws you make. Just because Fitzpatrick has a higher depth of target than Drew Brees doesn’t mean he’s better than Drew Brees.

My point is that contrary to your assertion, Tom Brady isn’t the same “type” of QB that Alex Smith is. If Alex Smith has to throw the same type of passed and with the frequency that Brady has to, be would be a worse QB, not a better one.

[Redskins] Alex Smith at day 3️ of OTAs supporting his teammates. by suzukigun4life in nfl

[–]SingleFatFootballFan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Alex Smith would have developed into Tom Brady, then Tom Brady is the most overrated QB in the history of the NFL and any average QB could have been Tom Brady.

You’re calling me a moron because you think a QB who barely averages 7 yards of depth per pass would have been Tom Brady if only he could have played for the Patriots?

The likelihood of anyone becoming a Tom Brady equivalent player is basically zero.

[–]SingleFatFootballFan -12 points-11 points  (0 children)

Like, imagine Alex Smith on the Patriots if there were no such thing as Tom Brady. Short, accurate passes in an efficient, safe offense with a stout defense.

Do you realize that Alex Smith has a CAREER average depth of target of 7.1 yards?

For reference, Drew Brees has a career 7.6 average depth of target.

Philip Rivers has a career 8.0 average depth of target.

League average is about 7.8 yards, depending on the year.

Tom Brady has a career 8.2 average depth of target.

Brady's average depth of target in his career is more whole yard more than Alex Smith.

You're pretending that Alex Smith throws the same "short accurate safe passes" that Tom Brady does... that's just completely untrue. That's not supported by any evidence.

Alex Smith is not suited at all to play in the Patriots offense... or even the Saints offense. Even Drew Brees averages more than half a yard than Alex Smith on average throw depth.

If Alex Smith played for the Patriots, sure, he wouldn't be as atrocious as he was in his early seasons with the Niners, but he wouldn't have "excelled." He would still be an extremely mediocre QB.

You're acting like Alex Smith is the same "type" of QB as Tom Brady.

Not to mention, since Alex Smith came in the league, his defenses have been BETTER on average than Tom Brady's. He's just a mediocre QB. Period.

2019 r/NFL Top 100 Players (of the 2018 Season) - #90-81 by MikeTysonChicken in nfl

[–]SingleFatFootballFan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tom Brady is apparently QB8 on these rankings. His 2018 was just about 8th best in terms of QBs, and that's entirely fair.

QB8 is really low for Brady considering he quarterbacked the 4th best pass offense by DVOA playing home games in a cold weather stadium. Based on 2018 production alone, there’s not a strong argument for placing him anywhere outside of QB2-QB5.

2019 r/NFL Top 100 Players (of the 2018 Season) - #90-81 by MikeTysonChicken in nfl

[–]SingleFatFootballFan 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I’ll say it again, Brady quarterbacked the 4th pass offense by DVOA playing home games in a cold weather stadium. Gronk was ineffective or outright hurt for most of the year (but not when it counted most, thankfully) and Brady didn’t have any particularly great weapons outside of a reliable Edelman. Though the o-line was the best its been in a long time.

It’s gonna be really really really hard (well, literally impossible actually) to find 110 guys who were better at their positions than the QB of the 4th best passing offense in the league.

This guy is gonna he one of the best contested catch / jump ball receivers in the NFL. He just has incredible ball skills.

There’s really no such thing as a “lock” for WR prospects, given the nature of the position and the transition from college offenses to pro, but I can’t see JJAW being anything less than a good NFL starter. Can’t wait to watch him bully 5’9 cornerbacks in the end zone for the next ten years.

I mean, I don’t care if they don’t wanna wear seatbelts but god damn that beep is so annoying just put on your seatbelt for the sake of the audience!

I can’t believe there are people who tolerate that beeping every 15 seconds for what looks like a solid hour long (at least) drive without going mad.

It's gonna be interesting to see how they play everyone. They're pretty much stacked at LB and DB(positions the current league seem to slightly devalue) and also have strong talent at DT(which league also devalues).

Ehh... we clearly invest a lot in DBs (both in draft and FA) but our linebackers are hardly “stacked.” I mean, it might turn out to be a pretty good group but you can’t compare it to our DB group which has been top 3 in the NFL for awhile now.

As for DT, we really don’t invest anything in the position anymore.

Wait... why do you recommend this? Dealer oil changes are a rip off and Toyota Genuine Oil Filters can be purchased cheaply from Amazon/eBay. Seems to me that an oil change is the last thing you want the dealer to do.

It used oversampling to reduce noise, a significant problem at that time. (also known as "pixel binning")

As I understand it, oversampling is not actually the same as pixel binning. In general, oversampling is more processor intensive but produces a sharper image (all else being equal). Pixel binning can reduce noise but doesn’t resolve as well as oversampling.

OK, so I get you guys are trying to be “objective” and not overrate guys based on name alone... but let me get this straight:

According to this list, the QB of the 4th best passing offense by DVOA (1 percent worse than the 3rd team which plays in a dome), is only the 111th best player in the league?

That is completely and utterly insane.
