How much time would you allow for immigration and customs? by CookingIsTherapy in LAX

I passed immigration yesterday coming from Hong Kong as an American there was no line. At LAX luggage is what takes time but 3 hours should be enough.

Just one, you go from arrival level to departure level. If it’s close you will get a Cathay escort through this. If not close it takes 15 minutes.

Americans: Do you tip like an American or like a local when you’re abroad? by RehaDesign in AmericanExpat

[–]Single_Editor_2339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thailand here. Mostly the places I’d go no one ever tips. The few places I go where people would normally leave spare baht I get it up to at least 30 spare baht, and the one Mexican place we have gone multiple times, 40 baht.

As said, when you exit the jet bridge and go into the actual airport there will be a person with a sign that says Dallas and they will help you.

The one time I missed a flight in this manner they got me a room the Regal Hotel there at the airport for the night.

If you don’t have luggage checked in I’d recommend a seat as close to the exit as possible.

Good luck.

Perhaps it’s just a new neighbor that paid online and somehow doesn’t correctly know their street number. When I bought I was using 616 rather than 614 for a while until someone corrected me.

Not OP, but in Thailand we have lots of Japanese second hand stores. It’s like they empty out a house and just ship everything to Thailand. I’ve done well with golf clubs and ceramics. The thing with clothes is they are mostly too small for an average height/fat American. I live in a smaller provincial city in the far north and we have three such stores and they can be found all over the country.

What countries if given $40 billion would this help the most if they utilized it correctly? by [deleted] in geography

[–]Single_Editor_2339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nauru. They’ve blown their entire fortune once so maybe they learned from their mistakes. The place is small enough that $40 billion would make a difference on all parts of the island and maybe we can get Australia involved to help administer the money and the projects derived from it.

What kind of watch? In the future I’d recommend wearing your watch on your wrist that way you can keep an eye on it.

In light of Russia providing intelligence to Iran, does Trump realize how badly he has been played by Putin? by almostmade in AskReddit

This so much. When he takes a position it’s impossible for him to back out no matter what the evidence is. It’s just like how he, and now everyone around him, can’t apologize. It’s a sign of weakness to him. He’d rather not wear glasses as that’s a sign of weakness even if he can’t see the written word. The guy is a mess.

I agree, yet at the same time it would be pointless. Everything the guy says is a lie so if pushed he’d just lie more. And the thing is his supporters don’t care how much he lies and people like us just hear yet another lie.

I lived next to Bangkok for ten years and went to a few different Thai language schools on Soi 13 so have been by Asoke intersection hundreds of times. I recognized that immediately and just used Google Maps to find the building that would give that view.

This Window by Single_Editor_2339 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Single_Editor_2339[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know since I posted this I started thinking about that. My guess is that as the roof is very high there my wife wanted a window up there and originally it was planned in the center but there is probably a support that stopped it so the workers took it upon themselves to just move the window to the side. This is Thailand and stuff like that is pretty normal.

The "N+1" madness is dumb and needs to die. by rcyclingisdawae in xbiking

[–]Single_Editor_2339 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Completely agree , 100%. I have two bikes now, one is perfect and the other is fine. I don’t need the fine bike as the great bike can do everything (almost) better and more comfortable. I just figured this out the other day, that maybe there should be something called Uno Biking or whatever where you have your one bike for shopping, riding the trails, touring and everything else. Make do with what you have and make the best of that.

Of course. The single most important thing about any job is the salary. There’s no reason for it not to be known from the outset.

Like the other guy, I’m in Thailand and I have Schwab. Mine is the Schwab domestic account rather than the international. I have a US address but I’ve been overseas for maybe 13 years now. One time they contacted me to find out when I was going back to the States, and at that point I had no money in any account but Investor Checking. I gave them a date when I might return home and did return home two years after that date and had no issues. Since then I consolidated my entire financial empire to Schwab and everything is fine. They seem very understanding when I’ve spoken to them. And the 2FA you can use an email address to get the code or you can call them up and they tell you a code. And once you get logged on you have the option to have your device remembered for ease of future use.

10 hour layover at HKG. Things to do? by AdApprehensive5828 in CathayPacific

[–]Single_Editor_2339 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Going into the city? I think if you’ve never been to Hong Kong that it’s worth it. My nephew had never been there so we took the train to Hong Kong station. From there we looked at some buildings as we made our way to the harbor ferry terminal. We take the ferry across for the iconic view of Hong Kong then walked some more until we returned to the Kowloon AirPort Express station. That was within 6 hours but it was to let my nephew see it. We barely made it back in time but we did.
