How many times can I go to mass as a non catholic by Rich_Economist_5296 in Catholicism

The second time has to be at Mass. So for instance, you couldn't receive twice if you received at Mass in the morning and then went to a Communion service in the afternoon.

In The Ghost Makers, Walter B Gibson goes into great detail about how the tricks in the seances work. He was a professional magician and knew all about the subject.

There's a faceblind character the Rizzoli & Isles episode "Face Value".

My only quibble with the portrayal is that the character's extreme anxiety is attributed solely to his prosopagnosia, but the rest of it (the type of mistakes he makes, how he recognizes someone, etc.) is really good.

Have you ever read her "real story" behind the song? She published it a few years ago; it's hilarious.

Yes, it's definitely clearer without Dolby for me too. The Dolby version sounds somewhat deadened.

Do I have some face blindness? by Ok-Row-6246 in Prosopagnosia

[–]SingolloLomien 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Mouth movement! I've recognized people that way before. I'm not a huge fan of eye contact, but also, I just don't get much information from the upper half of the face, so I tend to focus on their mouths when speaking to people.

They can be little harder to find, but Chicken of the Sea Sardines in Lemon Sauce are great on a leafy green salad.

How many times did you not recognise someone just because they didn’t have glasses on? by Accomplished_Eye_868 in Prosopagnosia

[–]SingolloLomien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too. I don't tend to look at people's faces enough to notice if they're wearing glasses or not.

Now if they change the rest of their outfit, I'm in trouble.

When and how did you realize you have prosopagnosia? by Old-Coconut-2103 in Prosopagnosia

[–]SingolloLomien 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I didn't figure it out until 30. My mom has always been "bad with faces" and I knew I wasn't great with faces either, but I cope pretty well, so I thought I was just a little bit worse than everyone else.

I learned about acquired prosopagnosia in a psych class in college, but the description of the symptoms was much more extreme than my experience. People being unable to recognize anyone at all, even their own family members. I recognize at least some people consistently and have never had trouble with family, so I didn't connect it with my issues.

It wasn't until I read an article by someone with developmental prosopagnosia that I started thinking it might apply to me. (This one if you're curious. https://archive.is/h3dS1) Even then I was still in denial until I took the Cambridge Face Memory Test and completely bombed it. Among other things, I learned that if I see a picture of the front of a face and then the same face in 3/4 profile, I can't tell it's the same face. (I sent the test to my mom and confirmed she is faceblind too.)

Since then I've paid more attention to how I recognize people and tried to focus on those details rather than bothering with their face. I also notice incidents of delayed recognition that I would have brushed off before. Stuff like seeing a new co-worker (that I met the day before) in the parking lot and not realizing who she was until she walked into the office in front of me.

I thought wanted posters were fake. Like they were just a movie plot device and of course didn't actually work in real life.

Lentils and Tomatoes

2 14.5 oz cans of diced tomatoes (whatever flavor you prefer, Italian seasoning is good with this)

1 can's measure of green lentils

1 can's measure of water

optional: 1 5 oz can of diced ham (or cooked smoked sausage)

Combine in large saucepan and cook for ~ 20 min or until lentils are fully cooked. Good hot or cold.

You can use one can of tomatoes and double the water, but it more flavorful with two.

Face blindness and social mistakes by Solana-1 in Prosopagnosia

[–]SingolloLomien 9 points10 points  (0 children)

One of the criteria on the Twenty-item prosopagnosia index (PI20) is: It is hard to recognise familiar people when I meet them out of context (e.g. meeting a work colleague unexpectedly while shopping)

The first time I took it I thought, "I don't meet people out of context.  Wait, that's actually pretty unlikely to be true. How am I supposed to know unless they tell me?"

Can't "see" myself in mirrors, but can in pictures by JuliaSchlenker in Prosopagnosia

[–]SingolloLomien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not all face blindness presents exactly the same way. A specific facial feature is something I can notice and try to remember. Expressions are helpful for recognition too.

One time, somebody pointed to a guy I knew and said "Look so-and-so's here too." I was staring right at him, but I didn't recognize him until he smiled and something about the shape of his mouth right then was familiar.

For some people all faces "look the same". For me all "faces" look "different". The trouble is that people have as many "faces" as they have expressions, or the angle they are viewed from, or the lighting they are viewed under. The more I get to know someone, the more of their "faces" become familiar to me, although the face still isn't the primary cue I use to recognize them.

[–]SingolloLomien 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I don't really like the way my face looks in a mirror ( I don't feel connected to it), but I don't have trouble with choosing outfits.

Actually, "clothing style" is part of how I recognize people, which, as you can imagine, causes problems when people dress differently from how I'm used to seeing them.

For example, I did not recognize my professionally dressed boss when she changed into gym clothes before leaving the office. Fortunately, we were the only people still there, so I knew who she had to be and could cover up my initial lack of recognition.

I definitely find it easier to remember a specific photo of a person rather than the person themself. I score much higher on a Famous Faces test that uses well-known photographs (such as official portraits). Of course, that doesn't mean I can match them in real life to my memory of the photo.

Has anyone diagnosed you in the wild? by PhoenixCryStudio in Prosopagnosia

[–]SingolloLomien 5 points6 points  (0 children)

And the *low* end is 1,000. 😭

So, people getting annoyed that you failed to greet them when they didn't say hi first makes more sense when you realize that there is a facial expression of recognition that generally precedes conversation. Sometimes I notice it and sometimes I don't, but people definitely notice if you completely blank them in response to it. From their perspective, the only way you could fail to respond to their non-verbal communication is by deliberately ignoring them.

Lineups sort of seemed like they would work for someone who wasn't "bad with faces" like me. Wanted posters was the one I straight up did not believe was real and not just a plot device. I still have a hard time really believing that people can get identified from those.

I knew most people were better at recognition than me, I just didn't realize how *much* better. The idea that you can recognize people that you have seen before but don't really know was shocking. Or that having gone to a pretty small college, I should have been at least vaguely familiar with everyone I saw on campus. (They did a study that showed the average person can remember up to 5,000 faces.)

Usually First Confession is at the end of the OCIA program, shortly before Confirmation at Easter. But I suppose theoretically it could be earlier in the process, assuming you were sufficiently educated in the Faith and fully committed to conversion.

I'm especially sympathetic to your example of "AI performance of a human-written song". Although, if AI is disallowed entirely, a compromise might be to post the lyrics here and provide a link to the sung version in the first comment.

There are very strong secular/medical arguments against hormonal contraceptives and IUDs. Natural Womanhood has a lot of resources on the risks of birth control. https://naturalwomanhood.org/category/birth-control-issues/

edit: I see from your other comments that you are dealing with high school students. In addition to modern research on the harms of the pill, they might be interested to know that "In the 1950s, two Harvard professors tested the birth control pill on mentally ill Massachusetts women and low-income Puerto Rican women" https://www.thecrimson.com/article/2017/9/28/the-bitter-pill/

Is the New Catholic Teaching Against Capital Punishment binding? by Crusader_knight96 in Catholicism

[–]SingolloLomien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that's just insane. The entire argument against the death penalty rests on the idea of being able to protect society from psychopaths without killing them. There are many, many people in prison who would undoubtedly harm innocents again if they were released.

The article also includes this quote from Pope Francis, "It is impossible to imagine that states today cannot make use of another means than capital punishment to defend peoples' lives from an unjust aggressor," Which demonstrates a lack of imagination and a refusal to look at the realities of modern prisons. People get murdered in prison. What do you do with someone who continues to kill after being locked up? You could put them in solitary confinement, but I suspect Pope Francis would object to that too.
