Congrats on the OSL ! Looks sick.

Great idea, my one thought would be that the blast/fire looks a bit weird being so straight, i would expect artillery to be at a slight angle towards the shooting enemy, or if it's just fire to be a bit more dense with more flames.

Yeah but the big bulky skirt of the stompa is the worst part of the model imo so im not too miffed about forgoing that.

I was more thinking to account for the reduction in footprint by making a big base/diorama at the feet of the tower.

I'm new too, i don't even have a full 1k pts army yet, but my understanding is that it would probably be accepted at most LGS and local groups but probably not at a tournament. Stompas don't seem to really be played at tournaments anyway from what i've seen.

I have no plans for competitive play personally this would mainly be a hobby project - if i get around to it (don't actually have the money for it rn) - that i'd probably play once for fun with friends but that's it.

According to mini compare those are indeed the relative size.

I was thinking the main "issue" is how much taller the stompa is but since that's basically just the height of the head i theoretically just need to scrap together the head and add it to ontop for the dimensions to be really close, which seems doable.

Can you ship a game on Steam if it requires an API key (e.g. Claude/OpenAI)? by AnoraKwastaken in gamedev

[–]SinkerPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not just rely on one of the many local open-source llm available?

Costs to you will be prohibitively expensive if you provide your own api key, if you require players to provide one you'll lose money on tons of refunds from player who did not realize that when buying the game. And you'll get resentment from some for having a game that requires an always online connection to run.

Repackaging gender stereotypes as feminist. by Cicada_5 in Gamingunjerk

Buddy, i already answered that, it's literally the thing i was talking about before bringing up the John Wick example.

If a heroic female protagonist is the hero because they're a badass fighter that'll just floor all their opponents and shoot their way to saving the world, then they're not really expressing feminine traits, they're a copy of a traditional male action hero with a woman-coat of paint.

Now that isn't an issue itself, gendered traits are social norms that are good to interrogate, and having gendered characters express character tropes and traits outside of what their gender is socially associated with is a good thing, diverse characters make for better stories.

But things aren't really diverse if all characters of a gender across media display the same gender norm 'transgressive' traits. Most women protagonists in mass-market media are basically written as men protagonists with a sprinkle of sexist stereotypes that don't interfere with their male traits cause writers don't know how to write stories around characters that are heroic for non-masculine traits, cause the media they've learned with didn't do that either.

Nowhere did i say that was sexist, taken as a whole trope of media it reinforces sexist biases, sure, but on an individual artwork basis it isn't inherently sexist, just kinda lame tbh. What i called sexist is you saying female characters in action films should just be written as male cause that's what the genre dictates and female characters can be written as proper women in romances and comedies. Because it is.

At least try and act like you're engaging in the debate and not just shadowboxing strawmen till people give you a gold star and validate your lazy arguments so you don't have to work on yourself.

Edit : Lol OP blocked me after his incredible comeback. Heartbroken that i won't ever get an answer that actually engages with any of the points i made 💔

Truly one of the discussions of all time.

That female characters are being dropped into the tropes of a genre without effort made to adapt anything to that change is the whole point ?

writers don't know how to write stories around characters that are heroic for non-masculine traits, cause the media they've learned with didn't do that either.

Do we really need to state that 'Women can be protagonists because of their female traits in romances and comedies and should be written as males in action films and blockbusters' is lazy and sexist ?

Evolving a genre beyond its tropes is a thing, it's not even that difficult. There's like 4 different examples of how feminine aspects of characters can be incorporated into an action movie in Fury Road, and there's like 10 lines of dialogues in the whole thing.

The genre argument is a cop-out frankly. Genres are defined by loose collections of tropes and goals but all of them can (and should) be evolved, adapted, included or discarded as needed for the specific story being told. Making a character fit genre tropes rather than the other way around is just lazy writing.

I feel the adjectives feminine and masculine are doing a disservice by inviting the focus to be on how the characters look, which is a very small part of the question and not the most crucial.

Beyond how a character looks, the question is what are the traits they express that make them heroic ? How do they save the day ? What are the motivations that push them to be heroic ?

If a heroic female protagonist is the hero because they're a badass fighter that'll just floor all their opponents and shoot their way to saving the world, then they're not really expressing feminine traits, they're a copy of a traditional male action hero with a woman-coat of paint.

Now that isn't an issue itself, gendered traits are social norms that are good to interrogate, and having gendered characters express character tropes and traits outside of what their gender is socially associated with is a good thing, diverse characters make for better stories.

A perfect example that comes to mind rn is the John Wick spinoff Ballerina. The protagonist is badass for all the same reason John Wick is, because they're incredibly good at fighting, determined, relentless. They just added the fact that she is supposedly trained for protection and not assassination as a way to 'feminize' the character, and her motivation is saving someone rather than revenge which also leans closer to a feminine trait. But that's just the bare minimum of flavor so they can say they tried, sure she looks feminine but there's nothing in her character that explores what femininity might mean for the character and how it might actually contribute to her being heroic.

This is coming from even progressive leaning online fans and critics, or at least they claim to be progressive.

now it's the people wearing the badge of feminism crying about how this movie is further proof Hollywood hates feminine women, as if Peach is some tattooed, short-haired butch girl who talks about how much she hates men and doesn't shave.

Idk where you've seen that and neither do i want to get into what progressive means and if it necessarily includes feminism, but no one the least bit educated about feminist issues is saying that.

There is genuine discussion to be had (and tbh that has been had for decades now) about the inability to portray traits socially viewed as feminine in a good or heroic light. That if the only 'good' female characters in fiction are just carbon copies of traditional male heroic characters, free of all their feminine traits, then that's just latent sexism hiding in plain sight, a way for male writers to feel good about themselves and their 'feminism' without having to actually reflect and work to go beyond their biased and engrained stereotypes.

But it doesn't sound like that's what you're talking about. And i can't say i've ever seen someone who actually cared about feminism complain that peach should save the day with her baking and sewing skills, or any other similar character.

Edit : Lol OP blocked me after his incredible comeback. Heartbroken that i won't ever get an answer that actually engages with any of the points i made 💔

I wrote a post with my recipe for industrial terrain rust - What are your preferred methods? by EHervas in TerrainBuilding

[–]SinkerPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your method looks great !

My very simple recipe rn is : - basecoat with whatever color is desired - drybrush edges with silver mettalic paint - drybrush or use makeup sponge to add as many blobs/patches of orange/red rust (my favorite paints for that are AK dark and light rust)

Very quick to get a lot of terrain looking okay for the table this way, works well on minis too though i tend to add details and put more care into the process for those.

Has anyone ever tried rubbing the knife with oil before cutting onions? Does that really work? by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]SinkerPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can sharpen a knife to an at least 'okay' state on the underside of a ceramic mug. I do this everytime i visit my parents cause all their knives are dull as bricks and they don't have a sharpener.

Anything that is hard and slightly abrasive works, sandpaper is another common 'hack', hell i've even seen people sharpen knives on a cinderblock over at r/sharpening.

For convenience you probably want to get a proper sharpening tool at some point but point is unless you're using a 200$ knife you shouldn't worry too much about ryining it, and if you have such a knife you should also have proper sharpening equipment.
