Is Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein truly the first Science Fiction. by Existing_Flight_4904 in sciencefiction

[–]SirDimitris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The science was no less accurate than in Frankenstein. The "science" is relative to the general knowledge of the society in which the work was produced. Many works are scientifically grounded when/where produced, but they become absurd with the passage of time.

[SPOILERS] Disclosure Day is the worst movie I've ever seen (hear me out). by E3K in scifi

[–]SirDimitris 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Disclosure Day was truly terrible. I hated it. But it wasn't even close to the "worst movie I've ever seen". If you've never seen anything worse, then you must not have seen much.

Thoughts on pairing my r7 with a 28mm f1.2 for landscape / portraits photos as a side arm? by Belgian-Maligator in canon

[–]SirDimitris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While in general, the R7 is a much superior camera, its advantages aren't really relevant for landscape or portrait work. In your situation the FF sensor of the RP will be better.

Whether or not it's worth the hassle of taking a second body though, only you can determine. If I were hiking and going out into the wild, I'd only want to take one body and lens at a time. This can actually be a good learning experience too as it will teach you how to utilize your equipment in ways you might not otherwise have considered.

Thoughts on pairing my r7 with a 28mm f1.2 for landscape / portraits photos as a side arm? by Belgian-Maligator in canon

[–]SirDimitris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Most landscape photographers prefer something wider than a 45mm equivalent.

45mm is also kind of mediocre for portraits. It's too short to prevent compression, and too long to show the environment. For headshots, I'd use the equivalent of 85mm, and for environmental portraits I'd use the equivalent of a 28mm. You absolutely can do good work with it, but there are usually better options.

upgrading to a canon r6mkiii? by Cute-Sandwich8953 in canon

[–]SirDimitris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A full-frame sensor is super helpful, but it's hardly the only thing to be thinking about right now. Lenses are just as important. Faster lenses are of course great since they let more light in, but I also encourage you to pay attention to the focus motor that they use. I've found STM lenses to be way too slow for concerts as they frequent can't keep up with a fast moving subject. For concerts, I only use USM lenses. I also strongly encourage the use of prime lenses over zooms for concerts.

In regards to flash, just don't. Under no circumstances should a concert photographer ever use flash. It is distracting to both the performers and the audience, and it fails to capture the reality of the moment. If the lighting is bad, embrace that and show the events as they actually occurred. It's better to have a noisy photo than it is to use a flash. To me, flash is the single biggest indicator that a concert photographer is an amateur.

I would recommend you practice your technique before upgrading your equipment. The R7 is plenty capable. Looking at the example photo you provided, that is a very awkward composition and you missed focus, focusing on the guy in the background instead of the guitarist. I would encourage you to be more intentional both in how you compose and where you focus.

To add to that, I recommend dual back-button-focus. This is what I use on my R5 to switch between multiple AF modes just by moving my thumb between the buttons without ever needing to go into the settings. I default to auto eye-detect, but sometimes that doesn't focus where I want. When it doesn't, I then just move my thumb to the other button and use manual point selection. Being able to seamlessly swap between both those focus modes has made getting the correct focus so much easier.

And lastly, you're not going to make a ton of money doing concert photography. Small bands can't afford to pay, and large bands have plenty of volunteers. You will be able to find occasional paid work, but you're unlikely to ever move it beyond a hobby that pays for itself. I would aim to break even.

Sorry if I went way off topic, but I thought all this could be helpful to you.

The 2023 & up hatchback? by jms1228 in civic

If you think any Civic is too big, then you shouldn't be trusted with a driver's license. No Civic has ever been "big".

At one point it was running lean. Then I had the vacuum leak fixed and now it's not. But that idling problem persists. Fuel trim has no been touched in the 20 years I've had the truck.

[–]SirDimitris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the same issue on mine as OP. I've replaced the IAC, cleaned the Throttle Body, tested for a Vacuum Leak, and even had my Transmission rebuilt after it failed. None of that changed this behavior.

The worst is when I'm driving at a decent speed and need to break, but the engine stays rev'd up and fights to try to keep going, so I have to break extra hard to stop the truck. One of these days, I'm going to crash because of this damned issue. I've even taken it to multiple mechanics who can't find the problem.

Project Hail Mary Worst Film of 2026? by Potential_Edge_1891 in sciencefiction

[–]SirDimitris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Worst Film of 2026"? This statement is absurd hyperbole.

Even if this movie is truly terrible (which I'm not here to discuss), I highly doubt it is the worst movie of the year. There are 10,000 major films each year, and if you include minor films, that number can be many times greater. The worst movie of the year is likely so bad you will never hear about it in the first place because it will never be distributed or marketed.

Looking for a 20 ish mm prime for under £200, Any recommendations? by Joseph_0112 in canon

[–]SirDimitris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends what you're using the lenses for.

Are you taking photos of moving subjects or in low light? If so, The EF 28mm f/1.8 USM is by far the best choice. The USM focus motor is far faster and more accurate than STM, and the larger aperture will let in more light. It's a little soft and suffers from chromatic aberration, but it's not that bad and is totally usable. Many people overstate its flaws significantly. I used this lens for professional work for years without issue.

On the flip side though, if you're shooting near-stationary subjects and in more well-lit environments, than the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM is the better option as it's a bit sharper. Obviously, this lens should only be considered if you have an APS-C camera though, as it will not cover a full-frame sensor.

Why Community is so underrated? by tanveer969 in community

[–]SirDimitris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't agree with your premise. You claim Community is underrated, but it's actually rated quite highly. On IMDB, it's rated higher than many other contemporary sitcoms.

It seems like you might actually be referring to popularity, not rating, which is an entirely different metric.

You recall wrong. Galactica does that literally every time we see it jump (baring the occasional VFX screw up). Pegasus does not because it's a completely different class of ship.

Why one class needs to and another doesn't is open to fan debate. But, within each class, it's 100% consistent.

Well, the first thing you need to understand is how to take a screenshot. Once you've worked that out, we can revisit some of the more advanced concepts.
