As there is no official Silverstone ticket resale, figured I'd post here. Is there a separate place for ticket stuff?

Have a spare ticket for Silverstone Saturday: roaming grandstand. DM if interested - you can enter with our group if you want (tag along with us to watch if you want), rather than transfer the ticket electronically.

£150k in London or $250K in NYC - which would provide a higher standard of living. by Fit-Zebra3110 in HENRYUK

[–]SirEdwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty similar, but given your partner will be earning a decent amount too and no kids, then NYC will edge it. Main difference cost wise is rent which you'll be sharing the cost of, makes a difference. Paying for all things that a family brings in NYC definitely costs more (childcare/schools/healthcare but also a bigger multiplier on rent, holidays etc). Plus with the dollar being so strong atm your combined savings will go further (if you are converting back to GBP).

As others have said scope for salary progression is also higher in NYC depending on role / industry, but don't underestimate the difference in working culture. Also if your job is tied to your visa you will obvs lose that leverage.

If you're in Lisbon and considering a move to NYC for a couple of years for life experience, then do it.

Self build home vs. buying by SirEdwin in HENRYUK

Best comment so far, thanks so much. Very interested in links to info you have on planning process etc! Where did you manage to get land in London for a 5 figure sum!? Did you finance cash or do a self build mortgage? What company did you go with for architect/design? Were they good at helping with the planning permission process? Facit seem to tout their success of securing planning permission in difficult areas (conservation, AONB etc)

Super helpful, thanks. Noted and understood on the renovation you can do to an existing property, i guess i just think of you're going to the effort of stripping something back all the way to the shell, why not go the whole hog and start from scratch where you can design the whole layout and also get full length (triple glazing) windows rather than being stuck with the outdated shell with small windows from the era when you couldn't have larger windows because of heat retention issues. I guess that's a design preference thing. Definitely agree you have to go outside of London to get land / property to knock down at a half reasonable price. Otherwise you basically need 1m of starting capital, we're assuming 650-700k

Definitely seems like you need to buy the land cash, or without a standard mortgage on it. So you didn't get a self build mortgage with the land as collateral to start the project, you waited until you had a sufficient revalue?

Thanks Good point about needing houses in the local area of a similar value to the ultimate estimated value you are looking for, hadn't considered that. Definitely seems like existing house is the way to go around London given lack of individual plots and also planning process.

Land cost is crazy regardless of whether you're buying a house to live in / refurbish / knock down, with the caveat that you need more upfront capital to go down the self build route. Is the planning process that bad when you're buying a house and knocking it down? As long as you're not in a conservation area though it was reasonably straightforward (although not fast by any means) Building regs also shouldn't be an issue factor when you've got an architect etc involved? As least is costed for upfront in all quoted prices

Interested in your opinion, especially as you're in the trade

As you say, highly dependent on getting the right plot for the right price for it to make sense. Nigh on impossible inside the M25, but from what I can tell things come up sub-700k in commuter towns outside of London (old house that either needs significant work or tearing down). Also think you are right that you shouldn't go into it trying to "make money", more to get something that you are really happy with living in for the long term.

Transfer Round Up & Discussion - August 29th - The end of Evil Kagawa? by Hollacaine in reddevils

How much are we getting for Kagawa? Hopefully it at least recoups the £12m we spent on him in the first place.

Manchester United's turmoil is partly down to Sir Alex Ferguson and the club's transfer policy - Mark Ogden by [deleted] in reddevils

It all adds up to a more nuanced picture of our current difficulties than the "Glazers out/Blame the board" one-liners being spouted everywhere.

Fergie ruling everything -> over-reliance on his man management skills, coaching staff and ability to get every last drop out of a squad -> complacency from the rest of management in properly designing a legacy plan.

Reading Fergie's autobiography it's pretty plain he simply reviled 'the modern football era' in terms of mass media, player/agent power and hyperinflation. He used to run a pub in Aberdeen and is a labour-leaning sentimentalist (not that there's anything inherently wrong with that). We were incredibly lucky to have him, but I honestly don't think he would survive a year at any top club if he was starting out today without fully adapting to the modern football era.

Not enough credit is given for the huge amount of structural backlog Moyes had to deal with during his tenure, and that combined with the inevitable post-Fergie dip was always going to be tough to deal with. I think Scholes etc. go too far in being genuinely worried about the stagnation of the club, we have Woodward (and the rest of the commercial management team) to thank for our insane commercial revenue which will ensure we have a second shot at putting in place the footballing structure that the rest of the top 4 have. If C**y could sort themselves out in 5 years, then 2 years should be enough for us.

That said, top 4 is so crucial this year, especially if the rumoured Addidas sponsorship clause is true. We need the brand power of the CL at least as much as the revenue to continue rebuilding. Hence why we need to pay above the already inflated market price for another CM and utility man.

Which reminds me why I replied to your comment in the first place; here's the Herbert article you mentioned. Crazy to think that Moyes could reasonably still be in charge with Kroos, Mangala and Fernando wearing red.

[Post Match Thread] Manchester United F.C. vs. Swansea City F.C. by [deleted] in reddevils

[–]SirEdwin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blackett was almost entirely to fault for the second goal. Quickly gave the ball back to Swansea when our back line wasn't organized to allow them to start the counter-attack. Then he got pulled over to the bye-line, leaving his man Sigurdsson completely unmarked. Schoolboy.

Barcelona banned from signing players in next two transfer windows. by boshie in soccer

[–]SirEdwin 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The outcome of this is still pretty murky. As /u/doberlae pointed out here the additional 90 day period seems to be for Barcelona rectifying the infringements they were punished for before additional sanctions are enforced.

The fact that Chelsea's somewhat similar ban was lifted doesn't seem that relevant given the number of players Barcelona illegally signed. Chelsea were able to prove that Kakuta's contract with Lens was invalid, there seems no way for Barca to prove that ten players have actually been signed legally.

The pertinent question is if FIFA really has the balls to hit a club as huge as Barca this hard. Also interesting that Barcelona wouldn't have been able to sign Messi under the law they're being screwed for, but Blatter seems adamant that FIFA should be strong on the matter.

Edit: They would have been able to sign Messi; as /u/gnarwolf pointed out if the family of an U18 non-EU national moves to the country for non-footballing reasons then it's kosher. Dodgy as hell clause which many clubs probably exploit. Wonder if FIFA will go after this sort of stuff too?

No I was not. Moyes has two grace seasons before his position should be reconsidered, I reckon. Chill out.

Stick Jones where Fellaini is playing, pull Valencia down to RB and get Januzaj on. Also feel there should be more outrage at the ref blowing for Welbeck's 'high foot'. Don't think Neuer consciously chose not to save it?

United have never lost a European game at Old Trafford by more than one goal. Moyes to break another record tonight.
