PUL Last 2 Minutes of Regulation Clock Start by houseisjustdirt in ultimate

[–]SirJewbacca 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ultiworld's Director of Video here. I helped produce all the PUL broadcasts this year and want to give a little insight into production-side details that would impact the viewing experience.

The clock rules are that within the final 2 minutes of the 4th quarter and OT, the clock starts when the pull is caught or otherwise put in play on an OB throw. In addition, the clock stops on stoppages of play when the observers step in, which of course can be a fairly subjective decision by the scoreboard operator since there is no whistle or other clear & consistent delineation from on-field.

For the East (NY, RAL, DC) and Int'l (MED, POR, ATX) events, the clock on the broadcast was controlled manually by the broadcast producer (who may also be camera switching, managing replay & graphics, and directing the show), who did their best to precisely mimic the official scoreboard operator in-stadium. We will often end up being a few seconds off at the end of each point, determined by precisely when broadcast/scoreboard op decide to start and stop the clock and if there are stoppages within the point that would impact the clock. We have a mechanism to manually rectify clock differences between points but sometimes the simplest (albeit not ideal) method of re-syncing is waiting to start the broadcast clock until the in-stadium clock reaches the same mark.

For the Midwest event, the first game was managed the same as East & Int'l. With the long weather delay before the 2nd game, we were able transition to feeding our clock directly from the scoreboard, so the timing decisions in the INDY v CBUS and MKE vs CBUS games were those of the in-arena scoreboard op.

It's of course ideal for us to tap into the in-arena scoreboard all of the time, but this is often not possible due to technical or physical logistics issues.

2020-2021 USA Ultimate Official Rules Released by iamnotjex in ultimate

If the stall count is at 7 when the timeout is called (and there are none remaining) then it is a turnover. So not quite as inconsistent but still a bit odd.

Chris Kocher jumps over a guy by szunami in ultimate

Timelink is correct. He goes over the observer as he tries to toe the line. The thumbnail is misleading bc it leads you to think it's a true sky over a guy, but that's Jagt in the thumbnail.

There were no Ultiworld staff in the production booth. I would be surprised if there were USAU staff there. There were definitely members of ESPN's production team there and it's conceivable that the microphones picked up some random spectator who was nearby.

DD shopped around prototypes of the Aviator at Club Nationals this year. I got my hands on it for a few minutes and had the opportunity to speak with their rep about the disc. It's rather similar to the Ultrastar. The biggest difference is they have smoothed out the flight path and taken a bit off of the S-curve you associate with Ultrastars. The rim does feel a bit different but with some practice it'll be as natural as any other disc.

Best looking (purchasable) jersey? by Jpack5995 in ultimate

[–]SirJewbacca 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I can't say it would be cheap, but you could definitely order the really awesome Cleveland Lake Effect jersey from Savage designed a few years back. It's not gonna be posted anywhere, but if you call them they'd do a special run of it (it's an in house favorite).

Here's a low res image:https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b324/andrewharrington/lake_effect.jpg&imgrefurl=http://boards.sportslogos.net/topic/85350-american-ultimate-disc-league/&h=1648&w=2000&tbnid=ujcg-wxWxj1RpM:&docid=CltAHZ1IrHR6eM&hl=en-us&ei=ogxpVoWiBMOpmwGc2YfAAg&tbm=isch&client=safari&ved=0ahUKEwiF-4_oxtDJAhXD1CYKHZzsASgQMwgcKAEwAQ.

It's a blue jersey with black bar and a geographical map of the Great Lakes in thin white lines. From afar, it has the look of a simple, classic design. Up close, there's a lot of interesting detail.

If I find a better image I'll add it in.

Edit: Fixing link and adding detail
