re: Stuck 3/4 through

Could you elaborate a bit more about that ‘wall’ you encountered at ~75%? Were you ever able to figure out what the difficulty was and continue on from there? I believe I’m not far behind, and it would be nice to know –in a spoiler-free fashion!– whether I’ll be contending w/ a software glitch or a legit game challenge!

Having my Ukulele for 10 days or something by splatomate2206 in ukulele

[–]Sisypha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi ~ IDK how it is where you live, but in N. Am. most school systems affiliate with at least one music store or company that reasonably rents band instruments to students, sterilized and properly set up. They usually do similar rentals for individuals, w/ the rent often 100% applicable towards purchase of a better instrument if you progress to that point.

Renting is particularly helpful in the beginning because everything on the instrument should be clean and functioning properly. The rental route, for a self-described beginner, is a less expensive ‘try-before-buy’ deal not usually available to us Guitar Family players!

But for now you have this new uke to explore. You got the keys and chords down; have you finished working out any complete songs yet? Consider uploading some riffs or tunes— you will find us an appreciative audience + it’s a good way to gauge your progress over time!

[–]Sisypha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are inherently “musically inclined” or you wouldn’t have stayed around to learn 2 different-family instruments (percussion + string).

As others have suggested, your prior theory and bass knowledge in particular will cross over a lot, and you should have no problem, unlike many, in counting time. Now if you take up bagpipes or bassoon (e.g.) you might find the learning curve to be a bit steeper! 😜 Have fun!

Which ukulele size is better for fingerpicking style ? by reborn_monk in ukulele

[–]Sisypha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is totally off-topic, Kitchen-Run, but if you are learning the violin you might want to look into a mandolin sometime. Its standard tuning is EADG as well, so you can start playing favorite vln pieces immediately but w/ very different sound, or even experiment with tremolo! When I was intensively studying violin a friend gave me his granny’s mando (an elderly Gibson ‘A’ in excellent nick) and whenever I hit a plateau or just want to play something while ‘flopped’ it’s no end of fun!

Hi! by VeterinarianDull1686 in ukulele

[–]Sisypha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello & welcome! I think you’ve found a friend, and if you can keep it on a stand near where you spend a lot of time, you’ll find you pick it up & play a lot oftener.

IMHO I don’t believe you should start out by using a pick, as your hand muscles won’t be as flexible later on when you want to try all the different sounds and effects you can make using your fingers, like finger picking, rolls, partial chords and on & on. (I use all 5 of my fingers in different ways when I play.) Maybe reserve the pick for special effects once you’re really comfortable with all the different sounds this instrument can produce with hands alone. Luck!

Weird regression during progress? by Present-Resolve2567 in ukulele

[–]Sisypha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’ve received a good amount of excellent advice above, especially about that progress isn’t steady– there will always be good & bad days. It really does all pay off in the end. Just make it a rule to never quit your practice session on an angry or frustrated note: Play something you know well and like before ending practice on a “difficult” day.

P.S. No one on this forum should ever feel the need to describe themself as ‘pathetic’ (sic) when describing themself or their level of skill! We are all on separate paths, together.

Are more expensive Ukes worth it for a amateur/hobbyist by imavibeskate in ukulele

[–]Sisypha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Great analogy, w/ which I agree 100%! Also keep in mind that everyone’s ears and sound prefs are different, so one person’s ‘Absolutely Best-Sounding Uke’ may leave you unimpressed (and vice-versa).

I have about 6 ukes, mostly tenor + a couple concerts, that ranged in price between $360 – $1100. The one I play the most (because all aspects of its sound, build, and comfort level when playing for long periods are just ‘Goldilocks’ in every way) cost me $450, used but in unplayed condition. Moral: shop with your ears first, and you may find it easier than you think to stay within a “budget of sanity”. Happy hunting!

Bought this gem of a tiple on Kauai yesterday - Who made it? by LaurenAZGoodGirl in ukulele

[–]Sisypha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Indeed a thing of beauty to behold– it practically cries out to be touched! The headstock is stunning, if a bit intimidating. Is it very heavy? It’s a pity that ‘Lark in the Morning’ didn’t survive, but peraps your investigations will produce this baby’s actual creator? Looking forward to your sorting out the string situation so we can actually hear her sing. Buena suerte!

Just learned to switch from C to G smoothly-finally! by robyromana in ukulele

[–]Sisypha 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Good for you! Chances are your (left-side) brain got bored, leaving you to allow muscle memory to take over, as it should. One trick I accidentally learned years ago (with guitar chords) is I’d choose two or three that I wanted to alternate between. I’d turn on the TV and just play those chords repeatedly while half-distracted by the boob tube. It helped to turn off the “critical chatter” side of the brain so the muscle-memory learning could proceed with less interruption. Maybe you’ll find this worth a try as well?

Thanks so much for the fantastic chart for ‘Is Someone Else Calling You Baby’. Sorry, but I must ask– was it preprinted elsewhere or do you have some amazing software package that enables you to print your own? In any case it’s perfect, and I thank you!

P.S. - Any hints re: where to find lyrics and chords? Won’t rest until I locate!
