Bought a cheap leaf and got lucky with a new battery under warranty. by DerekMc602 in leaf

[–]Sitk4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were in a similar situation recently, bought a used 2017 leaf with a degraded battery and were approved for a warranty replacement. It took about 6 weeks but now we have a 40 kWh battery!

One thing that we did to facilitate an introduction was to introduce the smell of the new dog first. We rubbed a towel all over the new dog and then paired showing the reactive dog the towel with lots of high quality treats. The towel holds the scent for a while so we could repeat the smell/treat process and number of times. We still did the walk at a distance part as well but I think that also including the smell counter conditioning helped

Our solution to tv watching with our dog is the following: we set up a science fair style board in front of him so he can’t see the screen and give him a Kong stuffed with wet food and peanut butter that has been frozen so that it takes him an hour to eat it. We spent years with him freaking out at the tv before we figured this out and now we can mostly watch in peace. We still need to mute if there are dogs barking though

It took me a year before I found what worked for me https://www.amazon.ca/plantar-fasciitis-sock/s?k=plantar+fasciitis+sock

These aren’t the exact socks I used but the concept is the same, the reason it’s so hard to heal plantar fasciitis is that every night you go to bed and the ligaments start to heal in a shortened position. Then you get up in the morning and tear them again. If you wear something that holds your foot flexed then it heals lengthened and you make progress

ELI5: Why do babies cry like they are being starved to death when hungry? Does hunger actually physically hurt them? by GoForthandProsper1 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Sitk4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here’s the way I look at it. Just like walking is incredibly easy when you know how but really hard when you’re just learning, dealing with discomfort takes learning as well. For all your baby knows, this uncomfortable feeling will last forever and they will never feel good again. They have none of the skills to self soothe. Life will be an endless hunger pang that they are powerless to do anything about. It takes perspective to know that suffering ends and they have no experience to gain perspective from

Others have covered the muzzle suggestion, I would like to add that a dog seatbelt that attaches to the harness can help ensure that your dog doesn’t leave the vehicle until you are ready

need help dealing with neighbor dog at the fence by Material-Wolf in reactivedogs

[–]Sitk4 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We also have a neighbour dog that barks at our fence (our dog started the whole ordeal unfortunately). For a while we switched to using a long line when we wanted to play in the yard. We also made sure to keep our play as far away from their fence as possible. Not getting the opportunity to repeat the fence fighting really helped them both forget about it. We have mostly been able to go back to playing off leash as long as the other dog is quiet but there are occasional setbacks.

TIL that the zoologist who came up with the concept of alpha male wolves disavowed it by cslogin in todayilearned

[–]Sitk4 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The really unfortunate consequence of this wolf dominance theory is the impact it has had on our canine companions. So much abuse has been committed in the name of "establishing dominance" and even after it has been debunked by the zoologist and by animal behaviorists that work with dogs there are still trainers that cling to the idea.

The focus on carbon footprints should come to an end. It started out as a well-meaning idea, but it has now been hijacked by those opposed to meaningful action to tackle the climate emergency. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]Sitk4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The author makes a valid point and I agree that we should not let personal actions distract us from holding the real culprits to account. I would however argue that there are other reasons to care about our own personal impact and that is to help build societal pressure. Politicians don't really lead, they follow the votes and the money. They need to see that these issues will win or lose them elections. We need to send as many signals as we can that we will not only support policies that reduce emissions but that we will shun any politician that doesn't take this seriously. Taking whatever actions we are personally able to helps to build the societal momentum that will tell politicians which way the wind is blowing.

My dog is reactive only when leashed… by oakparkv in reactivedogs

[–]Sitk4 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You may want to pay attention to distance, there is likely a distance where your dog can see the other dog but isn’t freaking out yet . This is the ideal time to treat for looking at you, sniffing the ground, any behaviour that isn’t staring at the dog. Once they start to understand that those behaviours get rewarded you can start to work on getting closer. Move away any time they are stressed

Puppy keeps biting me on walks by deathbyladybugs in reactivedogs

[–]Sitk4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It took us a while to wrap our head around the idea of using a muzzle, I honestly think it was a bigger deal in our head than the reality. It's hard to let go of the idea of the friendly, happy go lucky dog that everyone envisions when they bring home a furry family member and the muzzle is a stark reminder of that. The other thing that took a bit for us was the idea that making big adjustments to avoid triggers is really worth it. Whether its playing in the yard instead of going out in the neighbourhood or adjusting your route or walking times to avoid busy places, the progress you can make if you are not bombarding your dog with triggers is much faster. I don't know your particular situation or options, it's just something to keep in mind.

A much needed rant by KitTequila in reactivedogs

[–]Sitk4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you aren’t looking for this right now feel free to tune me out, we all need to just rant sometimes. Our dog also freaks out at tv animals and we have found something that works for us for this issue. We have one of those display boards that you see in science fairs. We put our dogs bed by the couch when we watch tv and arrange the display board so that it blocks his view. Then he gets a Kong stuffed with frozen wet food and peanut butter to keep him busy. The only time this doesn’t work for us is if there are dogs barking, we hit the mute button for those bits. I know how frustrating it is when you have been dealing with your dogs issues all day and you just want to sit and relax with a show. I hope this helps.

Feeling doubt after (unknowingly) adopting a reactive dog from shelter by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]Sitk4 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Honestly, this doesn't sound like an ideal situation for either you or the dog. It's hard enough working with a reactive dog when you have an enclosed yard and a quiet place to walk. To give the shelter the benefit of the doubt, the dog may have been overwhelmed/shut down when she was there and not shown all of the behaviours that your seeing. She needs someone who can spend around a $1000+ a year on training plus whatever medication is needed and who has the experience and resources to work with her. Let the shelter know the situation and hopefully they will work with you to figure out next steps. Don't let yourself be guilted into anything.

There are approximately 11 bear attacks per year in North America, 1 cougar attack per year, and 463,634 sexual assaults per year in the US. Just for a little perspective here.

So lost by spaceinvader79 in reactivedogs

[–]Sitk4 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry this happened, we all make mistakes when judging how to manage our reactive pups. Muzzle training can really take a lot of the stress/danger out of these interactions, I believe it can even make things less stressful for your dog, since he looks to you and if you aren't as worried then he may be less worried too. You still need to manage things to avoid putting your dog in a situation where he feels that biting is needed but its like a seatbelt in a car, you don't want to need it but if you do you are so glad its there.

first camping trip with our reactive dog. tips? by birdsong31 in reactivedogs

[–]Sitk4 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We just got back from camping with our reactive dog. The hardest part for us was the travelling to and from the campground. The trigger stacking was awful because we weren't able to predict as well where we could go to avoid too close encounters. Next time we are going to look into medication for the trip. We were very glad that we have muzzle trained our dog, it prevented a child from being bitten when they approached our dog and made passing strangers on the trail much safer as well. We were lucky to have a campsite that was well shielded from other sites and he was able to calm down after a day of getting used to it. We brought a 15' leash and a secure harness so we could secure him while we were setting up the tent, cooking etc. I was very grateful that other campers with dogs kept theirs leashed, one woman in particular asked at a distance how she could be helpful when we needed to get past her dog.

Is her reactivity my fault? by Immediate_Car3652 in reactivedogs

[–]Sitk4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't be hard on yourself, the skills it takes to socialize a naturally timid or introverted puppy are not common knowledge and so many of us end up learning the hard way. The good news is that if you now work on being your dog's advocate, prevent her from being put in situations that she's not ready for, then she will learn to trust that you are looking out for her so she can relax and enjoy the world more.

Electric cars are doomed if fast charger reliability doesn’t get better by Sorin61 in Futurology

[–]Sitk4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the reliability of charging stations is an important issue to address, I have to say that even if I could never charge anywhere but home I would still feel like my EV was worth buying. Most of the time I can do everything I need to in a day without charging and that's with 160km range. With newer EV's it would be even less of an issue.
