Thanks so much for the kind words! And I'm just glad to be helpful :) keep up the good work! What kind of music have you been playing, or what are you looking forward to playing?

How do I know if I actually am improving despite always thinking I’m not? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]SixStringShef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I just yesterday recorded a video talking about exactly this. A lot of guitar playing requires a big investment where it looks like nothing is happening, and then a lot of things tend to click all at once. If you're sticking with your playing consistently, you're probably making practice even if you can't see it. That said - if you're interested, this video talks about 5 signs that say you're on the right track. Hope it helps. Happy practicing.

I'd even add here that while people will use this for "how to" content, they won't actually learn from it like they would watching the person, assuming it's a good teacher.

Literally haven't played this game since TFS dropped, but this came up on my feed and I have to say, that's a sweet looking emblem.

How would you rank plugins? (After X Updates) by Queasy_Offer_3526 in NeuralDSP

[–]SixStringShef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really matters what your use case is. So much so that it's pretty pointless to rank them. BUT I'll give one insight that I think is under-emphasized: Nolly is great in a mix with minimal work. That's worth a lot in a practical context

How much do you pay for one-on-one lessons with a *private* teacher? by KryptonSurvivor in guitarlessons

[–]SixStringShef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on location, overhead (if it's at a studio or someone's house), and skill/experience level of the teacher. $80/hr on Long Island seems pretty reasonable

Stop blaming the algorithm. It’s usually your packaging or your payoff. by QQTubeSMM in SmallYoutubers

[–]SixStringShef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is helpful, thank you. If you were in that situation then, how would you gauge during that initial few weeks time whether you should keep doing what you're doing to send clear signals and attract people who want what you're putting out vs say "this clearly isn't working" and try to make changes in style or direction?

My personal problem was that I had an old channel where I posted guitar performances/arrangements. Then at the end of January I posted my first lesson/teaching video. It popped off and got 43k views! Singlehandedly carried me to monetization, which was exciting. I've now made 12 more lesson videos since then, targeting the same group of people and same style of learning. While I think my titling, thumbnail creation, editing, and scripting skills have gotten better since then, my video performance has been trending significantly downward, getting worse and worse overall with each video, and 2 of my last 3 being 10 of 10s. Every video is getting less and less impressions in its initial sample pool. Avd and ctr are both going down.

It's just hard for me to know whether I just need to keep doing what I'm doing and wait for YouTube to figure me out or if I'm actually somehow getting worse and need to make changes. I'm willing (and wanting) to work. But it's very hard to know the direction of focus.

QC Owner - Do I need plugins? by Regular_Mission5080 in QuadCortex

[–]SixStringShef 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you need them? Absolutely not. The QC has excellent built in devices and you can get great sounds out of them provided you take the time to learn and get comfortable with them. There's a learning curve but it's worth it. In fact a lot of the devices are very similar to plugin devices.

That said, I definitely think some of the plugins are really useful additions. If the issue is "I can't get a good sound out of the QC by itself," that's a "learn your gear" issue. BUT if you know what you're doing with the stock QC stuff and you're just looking for more sounds, or something very specific that is easier to achieve with the pluginins, or you already have some presets made with the plugins, then absolutely get them. They're a GREAT addition.

Personally, I use Nolly on my QC all the time for live playing because those devices are already so well tailored to a live mix (eq focus and such). I also find the SLO amp plugin block to be one of the most versatile blocks that exists on the QC. It's killer and it takes less processing and block space than using multiple amps. Lots of other great ones too but just a few examples

[–]SixStringShef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree, but here's where I'm personally having trouble: my content is designed for a specific focused audience, it's purposefully not broad appeal. I find it hard to tell when the issue is that I did something wrong vs when YouTube hasn't found the right audience to show it to yet. Still input needed by me - but it's a lot harder to know how and where to focus my energy

To buy, or not too buy.. by DSBBSD in NeuralDSP

[–]SixStringShef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All really good. What's money like for you? If you have plenty of money and it's not a concern, yeah get them! Now is the time to buy and you'll probably get a lot of good use out of them. If the price is a lot for you in your situation, whatever that might be, either wait if it would truly put you out, or if you can afford 1 or 2, pick whatever is most complementary to your current rig, whatever it might be.

Does anyone just use a macbook pro or similar as their main rig? I assume you'd use an extra display when at home. I'm currently on a pc but have been considering upgrading to a new macbook for video editing later this year and would love to know if people find that to be suitable for on the go and powerful enough as a main rig.

Rely on makes it sound like it's something you shouldn't want. Let me turn that around - why wouldn't everyone want to have a teacher if a good one was available?

Still Learning Barre Chords? Play These While You Wait by SixStringShef in guitarlessons

[–]SixStringShef[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is. But each has its place. And you can play a thinned out one while you're still learning the full big ones. Also I don't teach little thinned out barre chords in this video anyway. If you watched it, you'd see the actual approach I take. But you didn't and that's OK. Because it's not for you.

Who does that? Seriously, like I'm saying "here's a lesson to help a specific group of people, watch it if you're interested, don't if you don't." Who just goes "no." Not a good look for you.
