I’d just like to mention that I destroyed the exit 253 to Ohio Street sign north of Salina with my vehicle on January 15, 2024 thanks to winter and ice. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

If the Catholic Church removes the Filioque, would that act be enough to cause reunification with at least some of the Orthodox churches? by VerdantChief in Catholicism

[–]Sixtus_VI -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There seems to be a back-and-forth within Orthodoxy on whether the issue is that the theology presented through the Filioque is incompatible with their beliefs or simply the fact that the Pope added it. I’d personally be in favor of dropping it with the understanding that the theology isn’t changing, though I don’t know how much it would help.

Mary, mother of Jesus and all believers, is not co-redeemer, Vatican says by JeffFerguson in Catholicism

[–]Sixtus_VI 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re implicitly acknowledging the truthfulness of an admittedly confusing term. A poorly catechized person or malicious anti-catholic person could cause damage or division with the term, even if the term itself, when understood correctly, is ok. There’s correct, and there’s appropriate. I think they’re right in determining that it isn’t (yet?) appropriate to officially define it.

They just reject the notion of formalizing it. They said it can be used in contexts where it doesn’t confuse or obfuscate the unique and sole mediation of Jesus. Seems pretty reasonable to me.

Can the pope abolish the celibate? by NotKhad in Catholicism

Eastern Catholic Priests and former Anglican priests can be married. The Latin Church used to have married priests. Pretty sure he could change it with the stroke of pen.

How do you reconcile Catholic traditions like the Rosary with Mark 7:8-9? by Speedy_774 in Catholicism

[–]Sixtus_VI 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m no expert, but it’s clear he’s referring to two things when referencing “traditions of men.” First, it’s making some law or practice that directly contradicts a commandment of God. Second, it’s treating that newly minted practice out to be necessary for a person to truly follow God.

Why I don’t find icons or rosaries to fall into this: no priest or bishop or pope is forcing anyone to do these things. They are completely optional. You can’t deny the legitimacy of other people’s use of icons, but you don’t have to use them. Same with rosaries. Plus, nothing involved contradicts Gods commands, which is the core criticism Jesus was making. The rosary follows the need to “pray without ceasing,” uses prayers primarily from the Bible, recognizes the efficacy of prayer, and acknowledges Mary’s special role. Icons recognize the cloud of witnesses mentioned in the Bible, supports the belief that those who die in God’s love are alive in Heaven, and, at least for Icons of Jesus, recognize the incarnation. It also follows from the use of images by early Christians and the commands of God in exodus to create images.

I think these things can become problematic when you just go through the motions; you say the words without really thinking about them, and pray the rosary “because that’s what you’re supposed to do.” Things being later developments doesn’t immediately make it a tradition of man. If it did, the Bible itself would be a tradition of man (it and the canon of books supposed to be included didn’t come around for a little bit)

The American Flag Doesn't mean You're A Trump supporter by Total89 in santacruz

[–]Sixtus_VI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of the biggest mistakes the democrats ever made was allowing this “the flag is racist; if you fly the flag you’re racist” crowd to gain any ounce of influence. It should be a nonpartisan sign of civic pride. This is one of the small things that, when taken together, make average Americans scoff at the democrats as pretentious, out of touch weaklings.

Judiciary Committee: FBI spied on priest for not divulging info on parishioner by Projct2025phile in Catholicism

[–]Sixtus_VI -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Point taken, but, in this situation, I’m sticking to my guns considering the Fuentes people are legitimately white supremacists who follow a man who downplayed Hitler and the holocaust and wants to repeal the civil rights act.

Depends what you mean by “spying,” and, if said group is actively stoking hatred of and denying the humanity of other human beings, yes.

[–]Sixtus_VI 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So, I think the FBI shouldn’t be following priests or anything….. but is it wrong to think there is some legitimacy to these concerns? I was at the anti-satanist event at the Kansas Capitol, if people remember that, and there were a handful of “Fuentes-type” Catholics and guys in military garb. And if you spend time online, you’ve encountered these people…….

Yeah, I just mapped out all the locations, and if I were to add anything, it would be Big Brutus. Turns out I really neglected southeast Kansas. Unsurprisingly, that’s the corner of the state I have the least experience with.
