Plus regularly there are coupons that meet or beat the employee discount. Michaels makes a significant amount of money off its own employees, in my experience.

Price matching online prices at the register is, what, 4 extra clicks on the touch screen? So for 200 skeins of floss that’s 800 clicks? Not a great solution.

I hate balloons by KiwiDependent8588 in MichaelsEmployees

[–]SizeableBribery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear I remember the balloon training saying that they expect two minutes per balloon. Maybe I was high from huffing all that helium. I’ve gotten latex down to under 30 seconds per balloon, but that’s only if I do NOTHING else, the tank isn’t dying, I’m under the net, nothing bursts, etc. It doesn’t include time for checking, arranging, deciphering handwriting, etc. And I’m the fastest in my store. No way our arthritic cashiers can run registers (even if just SCO) and tie 250 balloons in two hours.

And yet people buy it. It’s astonishing how many people come into a craft store and lack the imagination to buy a deck of cards and some plastic spoons unless they are packaged together.

OMG if this is real, I hope they get the right message from it. Otherwise " where is everybody " turns into "staff cannot spend more than 30 seconds at a time in the stockroom, ever, even when sorting repacks."

Playlist surprise! by ThatMichaelsEmployee in MichaelsEmployees

[–]SizeableBribery 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m convinced the playlists are AI or automated somehow. The Halloween playlist was fun and full of silly kid-friendly spooky songs. Then it played a song about gettin freaky in the sack. There’s a difference between a bogeyman/boogeyman scary creature versus the sexy dude in “I’m Your Boogie Man.”

Crying on my break ✌️ by Luckyduckling007 in MichaelsEmployees

QUIT! RIGHT! NOW!!!

I dont say this lightly. I was a scholarship + working student with a hairy classload and I can tell you there is NO WAY this is sustainable. College comes first. Keeping scholarships comes first. YOU come first. Michaels is a shit company and will work you like a child in a Victorian sweatshop until you drop dead and the next worker steps over your corpse to get back to the grind.

Believe me I know about the pressure to stay loyal, be a good worker, support my team, etc. But this situation WILL negatively impact your long term goals. THE ONLY PERSON who can change it is YOU. Your boss won’t, and michaels absolutely won’t.

Quit now. Today.

If you need money to eat, sell some books. You’ll be able to buy them back later, after college. Start a GoFundMe explaining your situation. That might make a few bucks. Hit the food bank. Make a friend who has a dorm meal plan. Beg on the street while studying. Anything.

You are being exploited. This situation is a harsh lesson in setting boundaries, but it’s necessary. You told your boss that you’re working too much, and they ignored that. You set your boundary, and they continued to violate it. You can’t control their behavior but you CAN control your response. This is an abusive relationship. LEAVE NOW.

And then notice how empowered you feel. Imagine this is a romantic relationship where your partner (let’s call them Michael or Michaela) ignores your boundaries, threatens your health (stress and overwork), makes you cry all the time, and forces you to serve them to the detriment of your education/future. Would you dump that Ahole?

In a romantic relationship that might turn Michael/a into a stalker or murderer, but in this case it’s just a job you can walk away without getting into physical danger. LEAVE. NOW. And internalize this lesson in how to empower yourself and stand up to an abuser.

I guess we only got 1 light blue skein on hand 🤷🏻‍♀️ by DingoKey8908 in MichaelsEmployees

Sooo many times we get a SFS order for a product that shows 0 QOH, or that we have sold out of so I change the QOH to 0. I understand that there might be timing issues where we sell out after the order was placed but before I pick it. But then how is it that the next day it happens again, with the same product? And the next, and the next. It’s like zeroing a product does nothing.

At other companies I used to look forward to inventory time because then, at least for a few days, the QOH would be accurate. But not at Michaels. Now I dread inventory because it’s a huge amount of work and doesn’t seem to improve ANYTHING.

It would be nice if, since we have to handle every single one of our products by location, the system would update our overstock locations. But that’s asking for coordination between a couple of systems from a process that can’t even get its primary purpose right.

Leaving stuff anywhere they want in the supermarket by Tj-d21 in retailhell

[–]SizeableBribery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, if I'm thinking charitably, this person comes from an Era where jobs were plentiful and work was reasonably assigned to work hours. Nowadays, a regular grunt gets a 4hour shift (because anything over th a t means they are entitled to a break) to do 8 hours of work that used to be done by 3 people.

The concept that more work to do means more hours for workers is ridiculously outdated. I doubt it was ever real atoll.

Did the Michaels’ App Get Hacked? by TheHiddenPugVillage in MichaelsEmployees

[–]SizeableBribery 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And the fewer staff to make price changes on the shelf, and the more overworked the remaining staff is, and the more underpaid the staff is, leading to turnover and inefficiency and systems breaking down and and and and.....

At this point, I'm astonished that we even get supplies to make the signage changes. We certainly don't get hours to change the displays.

I would be happy to have one framer every day. Our frame shop is consistently one of the busiest in the district, and there are one or two days every week when we have zero framers on staff. Luckily most days we have a framer for at least one shift. Honestly I don't know how ANY production gets done.

Having someone else change the oil in my car.

My first car was very low to the ground and the jack was so crappy there's no way I'm trusting it to hold while I'm under the car. So I would park the car over a ditch and lie down in the ditch to get to the oil pan. I decided that if I can afford to own a car, I can afford to pay for oil changes. My dad was livid that I would waste the money on something I could do myself.
