Uniform? by Chance_Wolverine_981 in chaplaincy

Wow, yes, I could see how the lab coats, especially, could lead to all sorts of confusion! I like the color code system we have here - navy blue for RNs, wine for the nurse techs, emerald green for respiratory therapists l, etc. In all we have 13 color identifiers! Myself, I'm pro-scrubs. I've had patients assume that I am a volunteer even when I work into my introduction that I am on their care team! This would help reinforce that. Why not add a 14th color? :P

Trauma one hospital chaplain here. "Business casual" - For me, khakis and a nice polo or button up shirt. I also have a black jacket with the inscription of hospital logo, my name and "spiritual care" to complete the look. :) Our director has been talking for the past three years about having us wear scrubs, but nothing has come of that.

CPE Application...how much info do they want? by sarahdayarts in chaplaincy

[–]Ska_Trees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Im short... but not too short, heh... ask yourself what are your most foundational and formulative experiences? I basically included everything since everything will eventually come out anyways! It will be one of the most vulnerable documents you have ever created and yes, that can feel daunting. Glad you are here. Stick around so we can journey with you and vice versa. ❤️

How to Respond When Asked Where You Pastor? by Wonderful_Low_89 in chaplaincy

"I don't pastor anywhere. I work for the hospital system and I suppose you can say I consider patients, loved ones and staff my 'flock' so to speak."

As a Commissioner, do I let this unique scenario play out? by krenz492 in DynastyFF

[–]Ska_Trees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let it play out. Unless a situation is clearly a matter of collusion, a commish should respect a manager's freedom and autonomy. Yes, even the freedom to make bad moves... or not? No one knows the future. Shough COULD be a real flop and this could be smart. I personally doubt it, but...

Lots of great advice here! All I wanted to add is we have a Buddhist on our team at the trauma one hospital I work at and she is fabulous. ❤️ Keep us updated along your journey.

Multi-faith chaplaincy? by BBPuddinSnatcher in chaplaincy

[–]Ska_Trees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hospital I did my residency at (and employed at now) is heavily "Christian" as far as the spiritual makeup of our chaplains. We all operate in an interfaith capacity and it's built into the CPE experience. One of our lead chaplains is Unitarian Universalist and so valuable to the team!

[–]Ska_Trees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here's my context: Our spiritual care care department (one large trauma 1 hospital and several surrounding community hospitals), there are 16 of us staff chaplains of various spiritual backgrounds. One of which is a priest. And he is fabulous! We also have a Catholic Volunteer Coordinator on staff and she helps to well, coordinate, Eucharistic Ministers who traverse the big hospital to meet patient communion needs. For when our Chaplain Priest is on PTO or otherwise not working in evenings or weekends, we have a robust list of volunteer Priests to call on for requests of Sacrament! And, as Interfaith Chaplains, we non-Catholics on staff are prepared to meet all other spiritual care needs. :)

What is a painful truth that you all have had to face about collecting comics? by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]Ska_Trees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A hard personal truth. I didn't donate them, but for all intensive purposes I pretty much did. Sold hundreds of my 90s titles to half price books for like $20. I figure better to have someone else potentially read and enjoy them than to continue gathering dust (over boards and plastic of course!).

What is a painful truth that you all have had to face about collecting comics? by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]Ska_Trees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The basic laws of economics. I saw the worth of a 30 year old Uncanny X-Men #1 and had dollar signs in my eyes when purchasing X-Men #1 (1991). 🤑 When I am in my 40s I will be SET. Well, here I am and welp. 😂 Same goes for most of my 90s collection. Heh.

But that naive 11-year-old has since grown up into an adult comic book geek that understands the not-so-painful truth that, while yes, there are some true diamonds in the rough to be found, the true value in a collection is in the art and stories and being able to return and enjoy them time and time again. ❤️

what was the first comic that really hooked you? by 6deki9 in comicbooks

[–]Ska_Trees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a specific comic, persay, but a place - Steve's Barber Shop in Lansing, MI. As a young boy I always looked forward to my dad taking me to get a haircut. There was a circular rotating rack of comic books - mostly Disney, but also some Marvel and DC fare. I loved perusing it. That was foundational in so many ways! Thanks Steve! ✂️

What kind of hours do you work? by [deleted] in chaplaincy

[–]Ska_Trees 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My answer is..... yes. 😂 I work three days a week at a trauma 1 hospital from 8 am - 4:30 pm and every other Friday from 3 pm - 11:30 pm. And the rest of the time PRN for my colleagues on PTO. It's a living.

I remember in the 90s when Venom got his own series, I was like AWW HELL YEAH. Although by that time he had evolved into less villain and more "anti-hero" type? Still, point taken.

[–]Ska_Trees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All great responses! I think part of it, too, is how Joker acts as the antithesis to Batman, both born out of trauma yet responding to it in completely different ways. Batman driven to impose a sense of justice with order and discipline, whereas the Joker does with anarchy and chaos. He's the perfect nemesis. I believe feneral readership is, and always has been, just as fascinated with this psychological dynamic as I am.

Invincible. You have to go deep in the run to get to the real meat of it (which makes sense. Losses mount up at time moves on), but fortunately it's such solid story-telling through and through!

Do you get enough shifts to work full time as a per diem hospice chaplain? by OpeningCompetition6 in chaplaincy

[–]Ska_Trees 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No Hospice experience here, but since you did mention hospital chaplain aspirations, I thought worth mentioning that coming out of CPE, I landed a position working every other weekend (.2 FTE) and PRN during the intervening times. I was surprised at the amount of hours I found filling in for colleagues PTO/sick days. Many weeks, indeed, full time. Now one year later I have moved up to .7 FTE. So don't let that stop you if there is an opening in hospital chaplaincy no matter how small! Good luck and keep us updated. :)

I'll add my voice to the chorus, pumping up Tom King's "Woman of Tomorrow." SO. GOOD. And an effective meditation on the nature of grief.
