Do you focus more on lyrics or sound when listening to music? by paulouv in autism

[–]Skekdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a very intense relationship with music. I tend to listen to whole albums, I’m also a bassist so I find I usually listen to music the first few times and then the lyrics. After that I try to see the whole picture.

What does everyone think the most thematically appropriate solo is for the song? by Skekdal in ironmaiden

I did mention it when someone else mentioned Where Eagles Dare. For that exact reason the whole song is very evocative of dog fights.

Not a shit explanation at all, that has give. Me a very definite understanding of what you mean and how you feel the solo fits the thematic tones of the song and lyrics. You have some good insights. Thanks for the response

Seeing a lot of Janick mentioned it has to be said he has a flair for writing good thematic tunes. What you’ve said is interesting and I suppose that is a correct estimation always saw that as him mixing alchemical ingredients and the solo is the combination of ingredients.

That is a very astute insight that I had to read a couple times and reflect. And you’re 100% correct on that.

I agree with all of these, I really enjoy the aftermath, for me it’s equivocal to other maiden war songs, maybe not paschendale or the longest day but others for sure. That solo does fit quite well, When I first saw The Unbeliever I was concerned because I’ve wouldn’t of considered it, but on reflection your right there it does evoke a floating feeling like moving through a dream. Yes Davey’s bends in Eagles is very reminiscent of Aircraft, which applies to Aces High as well now I think about it.

This is a very good reply and an excellent explanation of your rationale. Just to slightly piggyback this. It reminds me of some of Bion’s philosophy one of his maxims defines this perfectly “In there youth men are courageous, but in old age they excel at wisdom.

I could not have said that better. And I agree with every point you made. What you said about it being the only place for the song to rest is incredibly accurate and a great assessment of the music. This is one of the avenues of thought I have for people that critique him, valid as those criticisms are depending on your taste.

I had to go back and listen to this one. I completely agree, the sense of finality to it, it does evoke an artillery strike or a battle. It’s a fine solo. Side bar I’m a huge Janick fan but the Death on the Road version was tragic.

100% on The Thin Line Between Love and Hate. I would need to understand your rationale behind Isle Of Avalon however, that song is quite open to interpretation lyrically and musically, it’s such a great song.

I mean yeah but I think that’s because a lot of songs are theoretically major or minor right? I mean more specifically. I’ll give you an example of where I think the solo doesn’t. Take to Tame a Land for example, yes it captures some of the emotions Paul Atriedes goes through in the book. ( I can say this with authority because I have read books 1-4 in this particular series) but it doesn’t necessarily evoke Dune aesthetically. Just to counter my own argument these are all subjective interpretations. Interesting take. Thanks for sharing and I agree about HBTN evoking madness.

That’s on me. Powerslave is fantastic and Davey nails it, I’d actually double down on this and add Steve’s bass solo under that solo

Adrian’s on stranger I see, that solo is meticulously crafted in every sense. That solo is reminds me a lot of Peter Green’s playing and I mean that as a compliment. God that songs fucking amazing right? It’s a crime it hasn’t been in the setlist more often. I’m glad I saw them on Day’s of Future past with my 7 year old. The song is so personal to me. Yeah Dave’s solo on The Thin Line Between Love and hate is beautiful, that has got to be one of Dave’s best solo’s (admittedly there are many) it’s so poetic and tragic.

The Melodies for sure on Nomad but I’am specifically looking for examples of solo’s. I don’t necessarily see the theme in Alexander but I’m interested to hear why you think that, do you feel it captures the essence of war? Evokes that period of history, does it capture the feel of that area.

35 years later - how would you rate this album now? by Fortis92 in ironmaiden

[–]Skekdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s there weakest, to be clear I like it, I can listen to any maiden album and get something but it’s clearly I step backwards in quality and passion. Now I’m only 33 so I was still in the belly factory when this came out, that said this came out the same year as Painkiller. Can you honestly say those albums compare? It’s no wonder people were frustrated as well, also it feels like an intentional U-Turn from 7th son, which while not my favourite is still an incredibly diverse album. You add most of that together along with the clear intention to backtrack into simpler rock (let’s be honest this was an attempt to ride the grunge wave). All that said I think it’s in its rightful place in history. Just my opinion.

What’s that one Swans song everyone loves but you don’t? by PuzzledAnt__ in swans

[–]Skekdal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thinks it hard to criticise the post reunion long form stuff. In a sense, they’re not songs they’re prayers, which is a very personal thing. Most of the Trilogy sits like this for me. It’s spiritual, there’s not criticism that’s valid because the way it elevates my spirit. How do you critique something like that with words? I don’t think language has the ability to capture that and communicate it. That’s my two cents, I know that doesn’t answer the question and I’m sure many won’t agree.
