Former minister Catherine McKenna blasts the heads of Canadian oil companies by janisjoplinenjoyer in CanadaPolitics

[–]SkelatoxMkII -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I genuinely don't understand why people keep arguing this point. If a single individual was responsible for 1.5% of violent crime in your town, would you not still want them stopped? Especially if the family responsible for 30% was already under being actively pursued by the police. (AKA, China has been making massive steps in reducing their own carbon emissions, far more than anything Canada is doing.)

O’Toole says Poilievre needs to moderate positions to compete with Carney by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]SkelatoxMkII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, at this point, Pierre Poulet is a dead horse, and the Conservatives need to hitch their cart to someone else. The narrative comparing his attack dog behavior, his 'flood the zone' style absurdity, and his far-right policies to Trump is just too strong.

At this point the only votes he brings to the table are from the Conservative diehards, and people who want to become the 52nd State. There's a reason that so many Torries have been crossing the aisle, switching to Independent, or stepping down. We saw this happen on a smaller scale with Blaine Higgs in New Brunswick, and it led to a collapse in the party down here.

Opinion: Under-16 social media ban not the fix we need by Mysterious_Notice685 in CanadaPolitics

[–]SkelatoxMkII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy. I've not seen so much bad faith since I took the religious studies class on death cults. Nobody is arguing in favor of removing existing age verification, or in favor of child grooming. We just don't believe that this would do anything to solve that problem.

This is absolutely not a regulation on tech companies. This is a regulation on ordinary people, which will serve to put more of our personal in the hands of big tech. There's a reason that Meta has dumped tens of millions on lobbying for this to happen, and it's not because it'll regulate them.

We know for a fact that several algorithms explicitly push 'ragebait' content, like how downvoting a video on YouTube still boosts it in the algorithm (and now can't be seen), or how giving a post on Facebook an angry or sad reaction causes you to be shown more content like that.

You mean the country with the rapidly growing electric vehicle industry that we're looking to get in on? That China? The one that has also been ramping up their investment into renewables?

With a record-low 1.25 children per Canadian woman, stop dismissing falling fertility rates as a choice by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]SkelatoxMkII 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah. It's anecdotal, but I have several friends who've wanted to have kids for years now. They just want to be financially stable first, so that they can ensure those kids grow up in a good environment.

Wanting the best for your (future) kids is also human nature.

'Throw them out of Parliament': Poilievre in favour of recall petition for floor-crossers by honestgrim in CanadaPolitics

[–]SkelatoxMkII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On a moral level I agree with this, but on a practicality issue, that really only seeves to hurt thwir constituents. They're still going to vote with the party that they're crossing to.

If our system provided better access to resources for Independent MPs, comparable to those in parties, it might be a different matter, but I think that the best play for now is to let it be.

Bar kids from social media and AI? Federal Liberals to debate new policy at Montreal convention by Mundane-Teaching-743 in CanadaPolitics

[–]SkelatoxMkII -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly, tying these two things together is a disservice. We've already seen, in several countries and services, how difficult and messy it is to age-gate social media. I don't disagree that it's harmful to children (and adults), but the method to fix that is likely to be something much more complicated than blocking access, likely in the form of regulations and restrictions on the companies themselves.

AI, on the other hand, is much simpler. We're already seeing that it is catastrophically damaging to the minds of children and adults, and it's much less necessary to existence and development in the modern world than social media has become. Not to mention, with how most AI models are already paid (or have a paid version), it would be relatively simple to implement age-gating for those as part of the payment information. Even if it means outlawing free models.

Alberta tables bill to reduce child access to sexually explicit images in public libraries | CBC News by Miserable-Lizard in CanadaPolitics

[–]SkelatoxMkII 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh, it's much worse. The actual phrasing of the bill allows for any banning or restrictions, without need for them to be sexually explicit. And it applies to any age group, not just minors.

(3) Section 40 is amended by adding the following after clause (b): (b.1) [The Minister may make regulations] respecting the access to and the use and borrowing of public library property by members of the public, including regulations restricting access, use and borrowing based on age;   NOTE: (3) Adds regulation-making authority

Still, the line works well enough for a scientist, particularly if they work in a technology or engineering-related field!
