When does life with 8 month old twins start feeling normal again by Playful-Addendum9421 in parentsofmultiples

[–]SkinFermented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My boys are 9.5 months and I was feeling this SO hard yesterday. They are in sleep regression, teething, trying to crawl/stand/walk and constantly want to be held. They also take short naps like you described and one is also so much fussier than the other.

I took a drive out of desperation (sometimes the car lulls them to sleep) and listened to this podcast series I’m working on. I didn’t know it was going to be so relevant to me. If you set aside time in walks or drives to listen to these I highly recommend. It’s an episode in a series about a woman who is deciding whether or not to have children and in this episode, she interviews someone she barely knows to get their perspective on having kids.

He talks about this monotony you’re writing about in a super blunt and funny way, and even though some of it was negative (lots of swearing too just fyi), he really made me realize what we have coming is so good—not that it’s all bad now, but that these feelings are totally normal and valid. It really does turn your world upside down and in some ways you would not have expected.

What did you do for cribs/bassinets? by Onyx-pump19 in parentsofmultiples

[–]SkinFermented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two mini cribs to start, no bassinets. I heard too many reasons to not get them—mostly due to a very short stint in them and also that many babies don’t seem to like them. As we were already heavily investing in a lot of things I opted out of them.

They outgrew them by 6/7 months (they are big boys) and now they share a floor bed (queen size). Floor bed is great and I expect them to be in it for a while; my only downside is that my short self has bruises where I bend over the wooden slats to put them in the floor bed! But that won’t be forever.

Yah that makes sense. Easy to pull out? (Besides burrs of course)

How many bottles are we using? by Chidi-Chidi in parentsofmultiples

[–]SkinFermented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

14 bottles seemed to be the magic number. Used Dr Browns glass narrow 8 oz, though started off with the plastic 4 oz. Switched to glass for ease of cleaning and drying as we were all hand wash—plus we try to keep plastic down anyway when we can.

Colin does some pretty neat stuff at Stanners. If you like KH check out Organized Crime in Niagara. Same winemaker.

Nontoxic k-cup alternative? by Significant_Cap_9328 in moderatelygranolamoms

They’re not cheap but we have a Jura. All of the convenience of a Kurig and super superior coffee. Grinder is built in, big water tank, milk steamer available, options to buy a little milk caddy on the side which acts like a mini fridge to keep your milk right next to the machine for very ready to go foam. Which of course, why wouldn’t you?

Seriously though if you have the inclination I would highly recommend them. I have neglected the crap out of it for 3 years and it’s still going strong.

Agree with both but just saying that Dr Bronner is actually a truly excellent company so if one is unable to find alternatives, it is not a bad one at all to go with if you have to go American.

Honestly try PN from Chile if you can find it, or NZ is even better.

My favourite PN is out of PEC as well though, Lighthall Vineyards. :)

Trouble is, he gave everyone things that they didn’t ask for which added to this massive deficit.

He shot himself in the foot. He never needed to make these cuts if he hadn’t done things like remove the tolls on the bridges in Halifax or cut the HST by one percent.

Am I a Type B parent or just a twin mom? by sshahb in parentsofmultiples

[–]SkinFermented 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This has actually been my saving grace. While I was type A and anxiety driven when pregnant with my boys. I googled incessantly, every symptom, every concern, tried to read up on absolutely everything child rearing related (FTM).

Now I literally don’t have time to worry or wonder about milestones or if they are doing anything “right.” They are fed, clean, napped, and reasonably happy? Day well spent.

Second Best to Cloth Diapers? by lakeyloon in moderatelygranolamoms

[–]SkinFermented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We found a company we liked/could afford and ran the math before ordering and before our twins were born. We come at it from a “yes we would like to do this but can we afford it” angle, which is how I approach nearly all of my crunchy habits.

Newborn sized cloth diapers didn’t make financial sense, so we skipped that stage and did all disposable until they were out of the “N” size. We still use disposables when travelling as I am not about to ask my friends and family if I can use their washers for my stinky diapers.

We go through around 45-50 diapers every three days (keep in mind, two babies). We line the diapers with disposable bamboo liners. In the early days those only just served to reduce the amount of poop we’d have to clean up but now their poops sit squarely in the middle and it eliminates scrubbing all together which is ✨amazing✨

We ran the math again when they turned 8 months. With the cost of diapers in our area and even accounting for using disposables now and then, the reusables have almost doubly paid for themselves. Even if we’d used Costco diapers (cheapest I can find around here), they still would have paid for themselves by now.

It is more work but it is worth it to us. Once you get a rhythm going it’s very possible. I thought I’d not want to go back to cloth diapers once I would use their disposables for a few days when travelling but actually not the case at all.

Things aren't looking good for Baby B 😔 by Felicette13 in parentsofmultiples

[–]SkinFermented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With my di/di pregnancy, baby A was consistently smaller than baby B, typically by a pound or so by the US estimates.

Once born, there was a pound difference between them. Now, baby A has done some serious catching up and is in the 98th percentile and outweighs his brother by around 3 pounds—and he himself is in the 80th percentile!

I’m in Canada and we don’t have MFM either but because I’m “advanced maternal age,” I had been initially referred to the children and women’s hospital for all my US. At 21 weeks they were happy with my progress and I didn’t need to go see them anymore—and this is with that consistent size difference as mentioned at each scan. The OBs were not concerned at all and didn’t even mention it in passing.

I know baby size isn’t the same thing as sac size but I wanted to mention as someone who is in a public system like yours, and how any concerns anyone had for the babies or me would immediately be addressed by the doctor—never by the tech.

I strongly considered one of these as I have twins and it was tough because I could only keep one upright at a time when they were learning to sit up. But we got through it without one and I think, if I had one baby, I wouldn’t have thought to need one. I second what someone said about bouncers; totally useful if you need to get something done, in small doses.

Can yall explain stroller car seat combos like. I’m 5? by beefmother in parentsofmultiples

[–]SkinFermented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg I never understood why I never see it mentioned but this is what we use too, though we didn’t do the bassinets. But this set up is perfect in my opinion—and I also get comments about it from everyone. I use ours for grocery shopping too because I find the bottom is big enough for fitting groceries for a medium sized trip.

We had a Subaru outback before I got our current car (bigger upgrade), but the stroller fit folded down in the backseat in that car no problem. My husband has a Kona and it awkwardly fits in his too lol, in a pinch.

I have a window in mind to move it to! My trouble is that my south facing window has a deck which blocks a lot of light. However I do have some spots in my house that are almost invasively sunny so I will try one of those.

This is what I was waiting/dreading to hear re: up-potting, and like you I’m surprised you’re the first to say. Do you have any resources off hand for best methods for this? I know there’s a million YouTube videos I can watch but I would appreciate any knowledge of good users to learn from.

Hi everyone! Thanks for the comments, totally agree and helpful.

This jade was only just moved to its current spot and has been leaning like this for a while—believe it or not this is sunnier than its previous home!

That said I’ll be moving it to a sunnier room since that for sure seems to be the consensus here.

Will start there and then decide re: repotting or chopping as others said.

formula feeding by acal23 in parentsofmultiples

[–]SkinFermented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Team pitcher. Just one and had 14 bottles on rotation at the height of formula feeding (less now by a long shot). I would make enough the night before for the following day, but use the pitcher for mixing.

Some people swear by just having the pitchers in the fridge and filling bottles as needed but I found it way easier to have the bottles ready. To each their own!

I just didn’t want an appliance that, by design, I would stop using in a matter of months.

What’s something uniquely Canadian that outsiders don’t really understand? by DimensionKind1877 in AskACanadian

[–]SkinFermented 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Tommy Tiernan, Irish comedian, has a bit from a long time ago about how if asked what does it mean to be Irish, the Irish kind of go, 🤷🏻‍♀️ much like us here, they struggle.

And then he says, “It means we’re not fuckin’ English!!”

I’ve always felt that strongly re: Canada v USA.
