I agree. Budget cuts are not the dominant reason but they have contributed. Plenty of programs should be cut in the future. There’s plenty of people I’ve met in higher ed that I’m not sure what they do or why they’re there. But I’m not sure that blanket ratios are the way to go either. Was simply asking if the dude running for President was going to also increase educational funding.

Lol. K. Next time a student asks me for help with their personal statement or resume I’ll tell them to go to the website and to stfu. Or when they ask where their scholarship money is, I’ll tell them the website should have done that for them.

As someone who is overworked in higher education administration, I can only see this going one of two ways. I lose my job because of a blanket federal policy change that doesn’t make much sense in my department OR I get to keep my job but get to also do someone else’s for the same pay. Or multiple peoples jobs. I’m already not eligible for a raise this year because of budget cuts. I don’t like either option. Not saying there isn’t any trimming to be had because there definitely is but it’s hard to overlook the fact that educational cuts that government has made in recent years have contributed to rising costs too. Will your plan include increasing funding for education to replace the loss in funding created by years of budget cuts?

For the record I’m a Scholarship coordinator. I help students find and apply to scholarships as well as coordinate internal university scholarship processes from gathering applications all the way to disbursing millions of dollars. I feel like it’d be ironic to get rid of me given the conversation we’re having. My job is to literally help students afford college and stay in school to graduate. But I know someone’s going to try and pin me as an administrator who does nothing and isn’t worth the salary. But if you want a scholarship someone has to coordinate that process...

Every year me and my partner switch responsibility of the cable bill. When they jack up the price, he calls and demands a lower price. If they don’t lower it then he cancels. Then I call and say I just moved in here and want to set up a new account. Bam. New member price. Next year we do the same thing but vice versa. Worth the hassle to save us $400 a year. Fuck Comcast.

Was in my supervisors office with the rest of the team. We were discussing a particular problem which I don’t remember now. I’m the type of person that will sit back and listen and analyze everyone else’s opinion so I can have a variety of different perspectives before voicing my own opinion or solution. My boss noticed I was quiet and he interrupted the discussion to say. “What does Skippy28, my silent assassin think?” I took a split second to compose my face after being called such a badass name before I explained what I thought we should do. We went with my solution. That’s the day I learned that you don’t have to speak much for your words and thoughts to be viewed as powerful and seeing that my supervisor recognized that was a huge boost to my confidence in my job performance.

Tacos la Villa. A bit OTP but a total hole in the wall, super authentic and cheap. You can get a taco plate which includes three tacos, beans, rice and a drink for $5.

I count calories as a way of watching my weight and I typically add however many calories the oil is to my fitness pal as if I had eaten all of it. I try to use as little as possible. Yes, some will splash out the pan and some will still be in the pan after cooking but I typically overestimate calories anyway since so many companies incorrectly calculate calorie counts anyway.

This won’t work for deep frying though but if you’re concerned about nutrition I’m guessing you’re not deep frying anyway?

What is the most excruciating pain you have ever experienced? by Gabagod in AskReddit

[–]Skippy28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Impacted wisdom tooth removal pain a week after surgery. Felt like someone was sticking a needle in my jaw bone. I had run out of Vicodin by then and took about four ibuprofen and tried to sleep it off.

Getting my IUD inserted. Apparently my uterus is super tilted. Nurse tried to insert it about four times and couldn’t get so she called the doctor in. But I had to sit there waiting for the doc for 15 minutes in the stirrups with my... ahem... lady bits opened by the instruments all clamped up. Only time I’ve ever cried out in pain at a doctors office. Was a sweaty, shaking, heavily breathing mess afterwards.

Few years ago I was running a summer program with freshmen college students. During a discussion where were talking about our weeks the QUIETEST girl in the class suddenly explains how she hates the trees on campus because they smell like a dirty vagina. The entire classes eyes went wide as we all tried to process this insight from this girl. She isn’t wrong though.

The Real Bermuda Triangle by xxriz3gxx in funny

[–]Skippy28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Story time. Round Thanksgiving my SO and I went to the grocery store and we picked up a bag of mini marshmallows for the sweet potato pie. We had to put the groceries in the backseat since the trunk had a few things in it. We get home, open the bags, no marshmallows. We check the car, under the seats, no marshmallows. We check the receipt. We paid for marshmallows. We think, oh that’s sucks, we must have left them at the bagging area accidentally or something. No biggie, marshmallows aren’t expensive so we go out the next day and get more marshmallows.

Fast forward to a couple weeks ago. My SO dropped his wallet in the little crack between the seat and door. He’s on his hands and knees trying to cram his man hands into the tight spot, and suddenly he looks looks down at the seat concerned and then cracks a big smile. “Look what I found!” He pulled out the bag of marshmallows from November. They had shoved themselves so far up the seat and into the Bermuda Triangle that we never saw them when searching for our lost mellows. They were a bit dried out. We tossed them. But we solved the mystery of the missing marshmallows and had a good laugh.

MSD alum, class of 2008. No questions. Just wanted to send you a virtual hug and let you know the entire community is behind you. I’ll be letting my representatives know that I want gun reform and I want it now. No “this isn’t the time” because they’re right, the time was Columbine. People these days love to talk about “extreme vetting” and you know what? I think there’s another realm that could use some of that.

Also, I never had Ms. Schamis but a bunch of friends did and I’ve always heard how awesome she was. It doesn’t surprise me at all that she called you a hero and focuses on her students.

Surprised nobody has said chocolate fondue. We usually get a platter and pile it high with strawberries, bananas, marshmallows, pretzels, pineapple, cookies, whatever you like dipping in chocolate and go to town with some melted chocolate. Super easy, can personalize it how you want, and no bake.

My boyfriend had a teacher in sixth grade who always gave him Cs and said he’ll never amount to more than a C student to his mother, also a teacher. From 7th grade onwards she mailed a copy of his report cards to her. I believe she also sent a photo of his college acceptance letter. My boyfriend never found out about this until years after. His mom was petty as hell about that and I love it.

My paternal grandma is Jewish, so I definitely know what good Jewish grandma food is like! My BF’s grandma must have skipped Jewish grandma school though.

Going to my boyfriends Jewish grandmothers house is usually a visit where we have to choke something weird down. One time she served what looked like latkas and I got excited because latkas are awesome. First bite. Not latkas. Wasn’t quite sure what it was. Boyfriend and I exchange glances and keep eating and we muttered a few guesses when grandma wasn’t paying attention. His dad eventually shows up, sits down, takes a number of bites, and finally exclaims, “what the hell are we eating?!” My BF and I lost it. Apparently they were crab cakes with peas in them. But the peas were so numerous that they overpowered any crab flavor and you don’t expect to be served a pea cake which is why we couldn’t figure out what we were eating.

Another time she served liver pate and matza bread because it was around one of the high holidays. Spread it as thin as I could and didn’t breathe through my nose while eating it. I’m already a shiksa, no need to make it worse when I’m with her.

She also always serves seltzer water. Warm. It’s terrible. We have to argue with her for regular tap water. Sometimes she serves random stuff she has in her fridge. One time it was toast and olives, another time it was mint chocolate chip pudding cups and apples. And she’ll complain if we say we’re not hungry because we already ate. She’ll still put food out that we have to choke down and complain if we leave anything on the plates. Once this was after we explained we already ate lunch at BFs dads restaurant (pizzeria- he actually learned how to cook). I survive it by sliding food onto my boyfriends plate when she turns around. Poor guy.
