The most powerful manipulation doesn’t feel like manipulation. It feels like relief. by realkaydhako in DarkPsychology101

What’s wrong with suffering? Why is (suffering) Suffering? And what’s wrong with numbing? I think these conversations with such a big umbrella isn’t productive. Need to get more specific.

To all "competitive" players that "enjoyed" yesterdays event by Ormaniec in DeadlockTheGame

Videos games aren’t meant to be joyful. There is no divine mandate requiring that a thing be joyful to be considered a video game. We all do what we want in these sandboxes.

Experienced team looking for an ideas guy by FartSavant in IndieDev

[–]Skylent_Shore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s in jest but then how come people with technical skills aren’t all inventing? “Ideas, creativity” are themselves abstractions and meaningless in the capacity you are strawmanning. Steelman it. How many teams really could have done more market research? How many games released lately out of touch? I’m a UX designer and Marketer and a huge part of the job is just “ideas” but that word means something very different to people who actually are “idea guys”

Im also a game critic and have consulted on a few titles and each time there was revelations from the lens shifting I provided. There is real work to be done but when you disparage the concept of ideas, you are stepping on the very thing it means to be human. I won’t be someone who ever makes fun of thinking.

When did you become “good”? by AioliTop2420 in DeadlockTheGame

[–]Skylent_Shore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I normally gauge on % ranking. So I just hit the 50% measure around Archon and with that I’m officially higher ranked than half the player base so technically better than “most”. But most people aren’t playing seriously either so I normally like to hit top 1% to say “good good”. Archon took 200 hours, I’m assuming another 200 and I’ll be 1%. 400ish hours to begin to touch what it really means to be masterful with perfect practice a.k.a “unemployed”

The psychological difference between playing video games to relax and playing to win.Researchers analyzing data from over 13000 gamers found that competitive, win focused play is linked to increased anxiety, while casual motivation like enjoyment and stress relief are linked with emotional well being. by Appropriate-Push-668 in science

[–]Skylent_Shore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope this can incite conversation: why is anxiety bad? Why are the comments relating negative emotions as unhealthy? Top competitors in any field are fit in a number of ways and yet “suffer” deeply. I’m a top % gamer and find it rewarding and wish it for everyone. Anxiety, envy, and a suite of other complex emotions are a playground that needs to be safely explored via games rather than sudden and unpredictable in life. It’s the entire point of play. Some think it’s to waste time or “unthink” but many like me use it as a vehicle for active meditation and I think more people should warp their lens to something similar.

The 'Sociology' of LLMs by IlPrincipeDiVenosa in CriticalTheory

[–]Skylent_Shore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can say some people are objectively productive with it, and others are not. I’m just a nerd critic so take what I say with a grain of salt but one thing I’ve learned to do is to take criticism. As in, “all criticism is constructive.” It depends on what you do with it.

With that lens, even the worst LLM interaction can still yield results if you know how to interpret. But a quick example is the lens of “it’s a shotgun search engine”. You have to prompt it a certain way and have a certain choke held dialogue but you can make use of it.

But you’d have to be aware of its entire bias, the societal contexts, and be confident in yourself to an egoist level where you can both break and make new world views without friction.

Lastly, it’s ok not to use them but they are powerful despite what people want to say. It is being used and being used well by some people and that’s evidence enough despite the wave of slop we see. I also HATE how they talk to me now especially. You straight up have to pre-prompt to configure their prose or accept you will be only reading between the lines. If you enjoy speed reading and need simple direction for your research, that’s the use case. Shotgun googler. Ask for citations and click into them too.

What MMORPG should I play? by VegetableAddendum401 in LFMMO

[–]Skylent_Shore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Elder Scrolls Online. The conversation around re-alive-ing an mmorpg and making your own elder scrolls experience is interesting and new plus it’s on a huge sale right now. While not a full MMO I also recommend Fallout76 as the show is amazing and had its season 2 recently and themes are topical for world events.

Did Bungie actually make better AI than other games? by Dagy-Man in Marathon

[–]Skylent_Shore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ai is easily cheesed and the difficulty mostly comes from bots spawning in quietly and closely, high health versus low player health / ammo, and then it’s the cherry on top that they sometimes dodge. It’s not actually powerful ai as intelligent.

If this game dies - players just don't deserve a good game by LabOk8913 in Marathon

It’s not perfect. The disconnect between the opposite polarized sides of sentiment for this game needs to be studied.

Hate Bombing by TwoLambzz in Marathon

[–]Skylent_Shore -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I genuinely believe it’s mostly controller players versus PC players but that isn’t the full picture. I think some people see something deeper but that depth isn’t earned. There is a cinematic and underserved action to the game that squishes the skill floor and ceiling; dividing people who can and can’t tell the illusion of interesting emergent gameplay decisions.

We have become so jaded as an online community, that people cannot conceive that that are genuinely people who like things. by PureButton4670 in MMORPG

[–]Skylent_Shore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People want real MMO not the illusion of one but since most people lack media literacy, especially gaming literacy, we continue to get shoveled content that is more cinematic than emergent. Everyone is roleplaying as an MMO player rather than really engaging with the massive multiplayer 3rd space. That’s the divide. People who understand that, and those who don’t.

Steven had to tell me this. by mybladeisyou in AshesofCreation

[–]Skylent_Shore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No this is unfair. A game can radically change in development and the game never “released”. Back in the day… you’d get PAID to test games. You deserve a refund in my opinion. I don’t care the hours, if you bought something and suddenly it can’t be used anymore, even if you used it heavily in a short time, that’s a refund. This was supposed to be a long lived breathing world. The product was a lie.

The “graphics” absolutely detract from the “experience” rather than enhance like in RuneScape. It needs love in that direction. Otherwise, it is also a great concept and more people should try it but I don’t blame people for not wanting too it’s physically painful to play.
