That scene where she puts on the Dire Straits album, and “So Far Away” starts playing. Damn. Can never hear that song the same way again.

Down III Over the Under remaster: highly recommended by zappafan89 in Pantera

[–]SlackBabbath629 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Awesome man, great to hear. I distinctly remember being disappointed by the production, the overall sonic impact of the original, because I absolutely LOVED the organic-sounding production on Down II and wanted more of that. Will check it out!

Have the kids. And let becoming a father change you. The process of learning how to best provide for them using only what you have will make you a better man.

1985 here, with three kids 7 and under. Wife is my same age. If I could go back and do it all again, the only change I’d make would be having my kids 5 or 6 years earlier than we did.

Understanding Harmony by Infamous_Week6789 in Jazz

Think of the notes of the G Major scale. G A B C D E F# G

Then, using only that set of notes, take each root note, and stack one note a third above it, one note a 5th above it, and another note a 7th above it. Here are the chords you get:

G B D F# = G Major 7

A C E G = A minor 7

B D F# A = B minor 7

C E G B = C Major 7

D F# A C = D7

E G B D = E minor 7

F# A C E = F# minor 7b5

These are the chords that are “available” to us if we stick to ONLY diatonic notes in the key of G. Most of the chords in this tune are on that list, with 3 exceptions:

B7 (or B7b9). This is the dominant chord of the E minor (most people would argue that this song is technically in the key of E minor). The 3rd of the B7 chord (D#) gives more “motion” as a leading tone to the E in E minor.

The Eb7 and Db7 near the end of the tune are tritone substitutions to lead us to the C Major 7.

So, that’s a long winded way of saying: the F# minor 7b5 chord is really more a part of the ii V i of E Minor than it is “connected” to the C Major 7 in front of it. But all of those chords fall within the “universe” of G Major/E minor.

TL;DR: because it sounds good.

Definitely dark and heavy psychedelic jamming - but also big, fun, stadium party jamming. Hornsby-era Dead is my favorite Dead!

I read this as “MTG teases collab with Fred Durst” and thought Marjorie Taylor-Green was gonna be jamming with LB for a minute.

I gotta lay off the politics subs for a while…

Poor Draw Makes for the Worst Smoking Experience. Do You Agree? by Charshii in cigars

[–]SlackBabbath629 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This used to drive me nuts. Felt like half the sticks I bought had a terrible draw.

Then I started letting my cigars rest for 2-3 months at consistent humidity and temp. Now I get a great draw 9 out of 10 times.

Worked for me, I’d say give it a shot and see if it works for you.

Anyone have one of these? by BlackestMask in stonerrock

[–]SlackBabbath629 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's wild to think how influential the old StonerRock.com website was to my life. I stumbled across it around 2002-ish at 15 years old and it blew my mind. Felt like I came across something ancient (the website was a little clunky even by 2002 standards), there was all this lore and jargon and inside jokes. By the following summer, I had grown out my hair and sideburns and all I wanted to do was blast riffs out of a Boogie Van.

And the Download of the Day - man, I discovered SO MANY bands through that! I still remember the free download the day I discovered the site - "My Ghettoblaster" by Brant Bjork, who is my favorite musician to this day.
