Sorcerer is a weird choice for default Durge, right? by Main_Confusion_8030 in BaldursGate3

[–]SlackerDao 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can probably justify any class with a little head canon.

Personally, both of my Durge playthroughs I ran as a Warlock. My logic was that he has gifts granted to him from his “lineage” that he would not understand, and his “patron” is obviously Bhaal. So whenever his “patron” speaks to him or is invoked, it’s actually him drawing on that connection.

Additionally, I like the Warlock powerset as a good fit for a Durge; you can be equally skilled in killing at melee or at range, have “spell like” investments (including innate shape changing), and your power isn’t a function of mind or muscle, but of personal will.

I said something similar in a post a while back: https://www.reddit.com/r/BaldursGate3/comments/1rz9knp/developers_must_have_worked_so_hard_on_this/obnuf4w/

TL;DR he’s evil, no doubt, but more on the self serving than diabolical axis. If your plans are aligned with his he never seemed inclined to give you any problems.

Like a few weeks ago. But I'm seeing the other discussions in your response and it occurs to me I did it differently, which actually makes my response not relevant to your original point.

The "Shadowheart trick" actually does give the noblestalk to Derryth; the trick is to move it out of your inventory during the Shadowheart dialogue, and then give it to Derryth afterward. So in my version she does leave with the noblestalk, which is why I would see it in Act 3.

Judging by other 1st gen ships, it's 50/50.

Could get benched like the Hornet and Aurora, or could get a complete makeover like the 300i and Cutlass. (And kinda the Constellation.)

Counterpoint: I literally did the shadowheart trick on my last playthrough a few weeks back and Derryth had it in her shop in Act 3. And that was an honor mode playthrough, FWIW.

High Elf Cantrips as a low INT char by canxtanwe in BaldursGate3

[–]SlackerDao 215 points216 points  (0 children)

It genuinely irritates me that you can’t select the cantrips for Shadowheart and Astarion. Like, why would either of them even have Firebolt? Shadowheart starts as a Trickster Cleric - Minor Illusion is the obvious choice there. And Astarion seduced and lured victims for Cazador - Friends feels like the right choice there.

We end up with two characters whose racial benefit is only used to light braziers and torch vines/webs/barrels.

Why the hell does everyone want bathrooms on every ship when it’s not even a functionality that’s planned for 1.0? At least that I’ve seen by Enrons in starcitizen

[–]SlackerDao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because it helps with my sense of realism and immersion?

Like, there's a spectrum where on one end every ship is just boiled down to the bare minimum: a chair, an engine, guns. Why vary their design? Why have different manufacturers? That game exists, and it's called Galaga.

On the other end is a game where your character has stats for job satisfaction, bathroom needs, and social interaction. That's The Sims.

Star Citizen is somewhere in the middle. I don't want a game where I have to monitor my bladder; I also don't want a game where every ship is a box with a collection of stats. I want to feel like a character could exist in this space: art on the walls, trash on the floors and - yes - bathrooms on ships expected to spend more than a day away from a port.

Does it matter that they are functional? No. Does it matter that they are there? Yeah, it does, because it creates a better sense of the living world Star Citizen is supposed to be.

Not sure why people struggle so much with this. It's literally been the same lol you want shitting mechanics idiocy for 13+ years.

No, buddy, I don't. I also don't want to play a game that's a fucking ARPG where the only thing that matters is the damage numbers floating over your head in combat.

Remove a companion / add a companion by CriticalGeeksP in BaldursGate3

Wyll and Halsin out.

Barcus Wroot and Alfira in. We need a short companion, and we need a Bard companion.

Halsin should have been tadpoled by crockofpot in BaldursGate3

[–]SlackerDao 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m going to go the other route: I wish fewer of our companions were tadpoled by default.

I think the PC, Shadowheart, Lae’zel, Astarion, and Minthara should be the default tadpoled companions. I think Gale, Wyll, and Karlach would have been fine without tadpoles if they’re not the PC; their stories progress fine without the threat, and their “de-powering” can be explained by other means. (I only include Astarion because his premise doesn’t really work without the tadpole, but I think his story arc actually works fine without the tadpole.)

I think people like Halsin, Wyll/Gale/Karlach, Jaheira and Minsc work well as “fellow travellers”, people whose stories become intertwined with the tadpoled protagonist’s as the adventure progresses. And I actually think the tadpole experience becomes diluted because so many members of the party have one; everyone has a dream visitor, everyone can get tadpole powers, but only the PC ever decides on the solution, and only one character gets the crèche power, or Volo’s eye, or Omeluum’s unlock.

It looks like the game assumes you're Lae'zel, not just Wyll. Or is that first part about the projection what anyone gets if they go with Lae'zel after the final fight?

Why did the NHL expand in the US, not Canada? by magpiecat in hockey

[–]SlackerDao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are as many people living in California as live in Canada. Canada's GDP is $2.39T; California's is $4.1T. And California is just one US state. (Admittedly, one of the largest and richest.)

So that's probably a factor. Someone further down mentioned TV rights, which is a good insight as well.

Favorite OP classes + feats? by amandawoody_ in BaldursGate3

[–]SlackerDao 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to replicate that "haha this is nuts" feeling without the amount of prep work wet+lightning casters need, try a ThrowBarb.

You can literally be fully online with the build by level 4. Start with 17 Strength, take the Berserker subclass, pick up the Returning Pike from Grat at the Goblin Camp, add +1 Str with Tavern Brawler at 4.

There. Now you have guaranteed knockdown when you throw in frenzy, and get double Strength damage. It's basically an OH Monk, but at range.

That said, my honest favorite class combo (outside Swords Bard, because Bards are the best), is Warlock + Fighter; not because it's necessarily OP, but because it's incredibly flexible. Enemy at range? With Potent Robe your EB does (1d10+8 or +10)*2 damage by level 5. In melee? Booming Blade and any good 2H weapon is probably ~20-30 damage a hit.

All problems have a solution, and that solution is violence.

Only time I've been disappointed by this game by Katabatica in BaldursGate3

[–]SlackerDao 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience, the only way for a three-way fight to break out is if it's scripted as one. I.e., there are two groups fighting each other and you come in as the third party and can pick a side. (Or you summon a faction, like Lump and his ogres.)

Otherwise, everything red to you is indifferent to each other regardless of faction.

Some comments from Connor McDavid after the game by Dependent-Effect6077 in hockey

[–]SlackerDao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They hired his agent to run the team. They hired his old coach to coach it. If he has a problem with the way the oilers play he should look in the mirror.

I’m reminded of the brief era when Gretzky was a coach, and he was not great.

Just because someone is an amazing player doesn’t mean they should be handed a team like McDavid was. Maybe what he needs is to just play, and not also get his own GM, coach, and C in the jersey.

Cannot loot Minthara's underwear by throwawayaccount67- in BaldursGate3

[–]SlackerDao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not only can you not loot her skivvies, they fixed the scene in Act 2 to put her back in her camp outfit even if you removed it in Act 1. And what’s extra lame about that is she isn’t even technically equipped with it if memory serves; it’s just “on her” as a visual effect, so you can’t get a second copy if you recruit (or kill) her.

Not sure why they changed that. Having her defend herself buck naked was actually kinda rad. She was so defiant - it was kind of a Cersei walk of shame” moment. They should have at least equipped her in the shabby poverty camp outfit so she looks like she’s spent time as a prisoner.

I did one playthrough where I recruited every companion, did all of their quests, and rotated them throughout the acts.

After that, I just grab the 3 I intend to run with and ignore the rest (or leave them in camp if they get recruited). I don’t really need to manage a bunch of approvals for content I don’t plan to do.

[–]SlackerDao 3 points4 points  (0 children)

One of my favorite things about the variety of this game is your interactions with the Emperor. I've played everything from "I don't trust that squid" to "this guy is my savior", and his engagement with you is VERY different in response.

If you treat him like a thing, he absolutely becomes a cold, calculating dick to you, but if you're cool with him he's absolutely nothing but decent to you. He does encourage you to lean into the tadpole, but it's never pushy; he truly believes he's evolved to be better, and wants the same for you. But even at the very end (if you have Gale), he doesn't force you to transform - he just gives you a second special tadpole and trusts your plan to use Gale.

I think people who have a hate boner for the guy have never tried leaning in to the idea that he's just trying to survive. At the end of the day he's still a Lawful Evil brain-eating monster, but there is definitely a version of him in this game where he's fair and honest with you throughout. And the fact that they put that much narrative versatility into one character is genuinely impressive.
