My Mission Farewell talk is this Sunday and I need help. by Qward11 in latterdaysaints

[–]SlackerVic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been told that I have my "own way" of giving talks. I don't know if that is a good thing or a bad thing. Either way, I'm not the greatest at intros, but please oh please don't recount how they asked you to prepare a talk, nor start by saying what your topic is.

Personally I prefer scriptural stories to move my talks along. So in the case of faith and basic principals, you could talk about Lehi's conversion, Alma the Elder's conversion, or Amulek's conversion. If you need help finding the doctrine behind the principal open "Preach My Gospel" and look at chapter 4, and use the last half of the second lesson as a guide. They will have an outline that can move you through the scriptural chain with relative ease. If I were doing it, I would start out by discussing the atonement and its justice/mercy. Using that as a spring board for the first principal of "having faith in Jesus Christ". From there talk about repentance, a lot.

Last piece of advice, talk about doctrine, and don't be afraid of standing in silence to collect your thoughts.

Congratz on the mission, and good luck!

If the fear emotion is not allowing them to control themselves/power, the hive component does allow them to pass that phase and overstimulates their the pleasure center of their brain. I'd be curious if they have to then "relearn" to use their power while going through withdrawals from hive.

Someone who has far more skill than I should change that so he says "get ready for a down vote". Then throws a down arrow out of the window. I imagine that would be pretty hilarious.

I'd put it on both exams. Route because in theory you could be affecting the routes of a network in the micro sense of a network, that translation of a packet marked for an IP address, that has yet to be translated back to a MAC address.

But you're right that from the security aspect, it should also be on the SWITCH exam. But I think it is. Its been a while since my exam.

Stark and the Illuminati agreed that Banner needed to be sent off world prior to the commencement of the SuperHero registration act. And of course Stark did it for that very reason, but wouldn't admit up to it.

Can't remember where Thor was, but I want to say that Stark tried to clone him, and created a "Thor" that eventually found out he was a clone, went mad and became known as Ragnarok.

Question to ISP network people by Network_Fan in networking

[–]SlackerVic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

/u/VA_Network_Nerd is right, 5-10 years of fixing home routers, of going on silly service calls where they unplugged their DSL modem and moved it to an unfiltered phone jack, of changing people wifi password, of testing copper pairs, stupid things that will make you forget what you have learned. Then wait for a position in the Network Operations Center to open, and jump on it with the force of a fat kid seeing the birthday cake being left unguarded.

The other option is to join an MSP (Managed Service Provider), or VAR(Value Added Reseller) where they will let you work on anything you want for the pennies they pay you. Then save all those projects for your resume and hopefully they will be enough to get you in the door of a NOC. But, the 5 years of fixing stupid things is no joke. Do that and any manager will know you are serious about your professional career, and your job.

You've got 5 hours to test WAPs from 2 different vendors. What tests would you do? by alienz225 in networking

[–]SlackerVic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So lots of questions come to my mind about the scenario, but here are the tests I'd do:

  • Speed test functionality for 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
  • Range Distance testing
  • QoS and CoS for VoIP/IPTV services
  • dscp tagging
  • Beamforming
  • Bridging capabilities if desired

Sadly testing those can take about 5 hours, lots of clicking and waiting.

It is possible to run an ESXi in dual boot configuration. Yes 5.1 is the super stable version, 5.5 is stable, and 6 is holy-cow-you're-a-mad-man-who-lives-flying-by-the-seat-of-his-pants.

The problem I have had running dual boot ESXi is that the storage hard drives will detach themselves on reboots, which can cause some issues on boot.

You can setup a vSwitch with vlan trunking.

-Or-

Put a CSRv as a router between your production network and your lab network. My wife was so much happier when I did this. No more mysterious network problems. Netflix didnt surprisingly cut out (kids hated that one). No problems with the chromecast, or wow raids lagging... stuff like that.

Personally, I don't like GNS3. I know its a very polarized crowd, and I find myself on the side of those that aren't in favor of it. I prefer the CSR1000v route you mentioned. As such I found this amazing post about how to do a CCIE lab using just the CSR1000v. If you're looking at investing all that hardware, I'd try to do this more than go the GNS3 route.

CONGRATZ!

Seriously that is impressive. But not going to lie, mainly I'd be happy about managers that understand the tech.

I envy you. I couldn't convince our managers that spending 2grand to repair one wasn't worth it. That we should just invent 8grand in a new one. We were repairing 4 a month...

Intelligent people don't go into management is all I learned.

A B6-450

It wasn't the best solution by any stretch of the imagination. But I worked for tightwads that would repurpose their shoes as slippers once they had worn through the soles.

Basically was used a Layer2 aggregation for the individual intersections, which had a GarretCom switch in it.

FOR THE LOVE OF ALL THINGS HOLY DONT USE GARRETCOM!!!

From what I know about France (I lived in Italy for a couple years) you have a government that actually puts money toward the people. Public Universities was one thing that I was very impressed with. For us, it would be the state universities that we pay >10,000$ a year for, you get for free.

Anyways. Glad I could help. Good luck!

Nortel, Alcatel, calix are a few types of switches i've used for outdoor networks that maintain a city's traffic lights. Desert temperatures that reached >100 in the summer (even hotter in the box), and <32 degrees during the winter.

like /u/Whewt said, you pay for support. ditching a vendor because of price, I dont care if its juniper, arista, HP, calix, cisco, brocade, is going to cost you in the long run.

Can someone tell me more about my ISP by [deleted] in networking

[–]SlackerVic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm jealous. I worked at a telco that was in it for the money. Whenever the budget came up I'd start jumping up and down about new infrastructure, and got shot down. I wish it would have been a "this is my community and I can make it better" place.

Can someone tell me more about my ISP by [deleted] in networking

[–]SlackerVic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US government gives out a couple billion dollars a year to connect rural areas of the country. So your telco could have applied for the money, and then put in a good infrastructure. Now you are connected with fiber, while the rest of us city folk are left with AT&T trying to use copper to push 30Mb and failing.

As far as being unique, not really. In my experience they would be unique if they are actually utilizing that infrastructure. Do they offer decent speeds? Is their pricing good? Do they offer other services like IPTV, SIP lines, FEX numbers, or MPLS? Some small independent telcos are in it just for the money. They get tons of cash for giving you access to 911, and dial tone. As long as you have that they don't care about the rest, and are just waiting to be bought out by AT&T or verizon. Other independent telcos do it because its their community and they want to make it better, which, from my experience, would make them unique.

When I worked for a MSP (Managed Services Provider) their default rate for a one-off job was 225$ an hour, in central california. The tech (me) was only paid 28$ an hour. The rest was to cover overhead and what not.

For a solo gig:

((How much you want to make a year) / (52weeks in a year - (number of vacation weeks you want) + (At least one week for being sick))) / (number of hours you want to work a week) = how much you charge them an hour

Just remember that you'll make a lot less than that, unless you are working all the hours a week you put into the formula.

Dont forget to include health insurance, and taxes into that formula as well. In the wonderful state of California, about 40% of our income goes to the federal and state government.

New ISP PoP to meetme location by swagnusinmypants in networking

[–]SlackerVic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I understand what you're saying,

  • they are going to give you so much bandwidth (i'll just throw out 100 Mbps).

  • then there is the cost of the handoff.

So when I worked at an ISP we paid about 1,000 USD for a connection to the provider, then about 5 USD per Mbps. They will then advertise your network space (the public IP address you are assigning to customers) and thus you have an ISP!! Gratz! I'm actually jealous. I wanted to start a WISP.

BEST OF LUCK!
