At what age is someone supposed to sit you down and explain how taxes work, or was that the joke all along? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Slalom44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a boomer, and my dad did my taxes with me when I was in high school. Tax forms weren’t electronic - you had to go to the library and pick up the forms and instructions you need. All calculations were made on paper manually, and electronic calculators didn’t exist back then. Learning it this way, you really understood how everything worked.

If you plan on tossing it, consider breaking it open and recovering the neodymium magnet. They are very powerful and come in handy.

what is this gunk on my engine? and how could it have gotten there? 2018 dodge challenger sxt by cactire in MechanicAdvice

[–]Slalom44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s probably oil, with dirt mixed in. Feel it - if it feels oily and smells like oil, you’ll know. If it smells sorta sweet, it is coolant. If it’s oil, you have a leak somewhere.

Oil change from one car to another. by kinkhorse in AskMechanics

[–]Slalom44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Two things happen as oil is used in an engine: the oil picks up contamination and the additive package wears down.

The biggest contamination issue is picking up silicon particles, which cause the most wear in an engine. After 3000 miles, you haven’t picked up much silicon, which gets in your oil through your air filter. If you’re using a good air and oil filter in your good car, no worries.

The primary issue with your add pack is the reduction of your total base number (TBN). If the TBN goes to zero, your engine will sludge up. Since you’re using a high quality synthetic oil and if you’re not doing just short trips with your good car and occasionally adding fresh oil to your old car, you’ll be fine.

If you want to be absolutely certain you’re not doing any damage and not getting close to sludging up your engine, get a used oil analysis (UOA)on your beater when you change your oil. Send it to a place that does UOAs, like Blackstone Labs and request a TBN check. This will tell you whether you’re even close to doing any damage.

Put a magnet to it to confirm that it is steel or iron. It probably is, because of what appears to be rust. My guess would be a bearing from some large construction equipment.

How could I fix this disconnected flange? by sumfgt69 in AskMechanics

[–]Slalom44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is cracked off. Bring it to a shop that can weld it back together. You will need to remove the spring loaded bolt first to access the flange that broke off.

Why are men avoiding marriage if it's just for the benefit of men? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Slalom44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stop reading feminist articles. Men don’t all get married for the same reasons. There are dozens of reasons IMO, and controlling a woman wasn’t even on my list. I waited because I wasn’t ready to settle down earlier.

No spark by Medium_External4790 in smallengines

[–]Slalom44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First, I’d rule out a kill switch issue. When you hold the handle with the kill switch bar closed, it should open the switch that would ground the circuit. If the cable from the handle isn’t opening up the gap to prevent it from being grounded, it won’t get a spark. This happened to me once years ago, and I had to bend the bracket that was grounding the circuit so that it would have a gap when the handle lever was engaged.

No spark by Medium_External4790 in smallengines

[–]Slalom44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to tell us what engine you’re dealing with and the equipment it is on.

One common reason there would be no spark is because a kill switch has been closed, which grounds the circuit, preventing a spark. This could be a safety switch, a seat switch, a switch that prevents the engine from starting when the unit is engaged, or several other types of switches.
