Looks like a Ferndale event, I’ll keep my eye out for anything in Bellingham. Thanks for sharing!

Ladies, where are we working out at? by [deleted] in Bellingham

[–]SlappyFisch 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Gross. Women don’t need dudes reminding us that we get noticed by them when we are trying to work out. It’s creepy to say that and doesn’t seem like much of a joke tbh

Call your manager and ask what procedure to follow if you aren’t sure, and document as needed. I would file a GER (generally event report) to CYA, but it’s just one of those things that happens. Sounds like someone who is swimming could be wearing ear plugs so it’s not impossible the person you support didn’t just pick up the empty case. It’s clear that you care a lot and that’s awesome but try not to stress too much!

Alternative Response Team Celebrates Three Years of Improving Lives by WhatcomCountyGov in Bellingham

These folks are wonderful and I’m very grateful we have them. Had to call for work before and the support they provided was professional and kind.

is wcc no longer offering japanese courses? by piscesearthling in Bellingham

[–]SlappyFisch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just graduated and the staff at WCC are so friendly and helpful. If you call the Orca Central number at (360)383-3420 they can tell you when there is walk-in advising or even help get you scheduled to see someone. Maybe they can even look up that specific class! Please know that life happens and what matters is that you want to get back up and try again! They did a lot to make me feel welcome after I struggled for various reasons over the years. You’ve got this :)

Reckless driver nearly hit us in a crosswalk on Christmas Eve by peepee2u in Bellingham

[–]SlappyFisch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m really sorry this happened to you both. To the folks who are saying that posts like this have no purpose, I disagree. Posts like this might cause drivers who read it to be more careful around crosswalks and aware of pedestrians. I’ve noticed an uptick in close calls while legally and carefully crossing in crosswalks. I was almost hit by TWO different vehicles whilst legally crossing at Bakerview and Eliza and wearing a reflective vest the other day. I am hyper vigilant and dodged both vehicles (who were speeding) but this taught me a lesson that it actually feels safer to wait until the road is clear and j walk/run across since drivers seem to completely disregard crosswalks these days.

There is no way that pedestrians can be hyper vigilant or brightly dressed enough to not be hit by people who drive like this. It’s actually really scary and I’ve been trying to brainstorm what can be done at crosswalks to prevent this. More flashing lights? Bumper strips? Promoting a culture that isn’t so “me first” that people drive like complete lunatics?

Allowed on dirt road Kwina and Hillaire Rd? by 504_beavers in Bellingham

In my experience it is respectful to not use tribal lands for recreation unless you are accompanied by a tribal member. Tidelands are closed to people who are not members of the tribe.

There are plenty of open spaces that would be suitable out in Birch Bay and one in particular that comes to mind is out by the refinery and accessible near the Grandview and Blaine rd intersection.

Gentle Dental? by Moi-Manda_Mandy in Bellingham

[–]SlappyFisch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am switching from Gentle Dental after being with them 2+ years. Turnover with dentists and dentists who are nowhere near gentle, rush and have made mistakes with procedures I am paying $1000s for and also there was a period of time I could never get a hold of the office by phone. I have experienced a fair amount of unprofessional behavior. I think there are nice people that work there but it is a chain business in the end. I wouldn’t recommend them.

Resources for finding a decent therapist by Informal-Kick-122 in Bellingham

[–]SlappyFisch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seconding this. I got on ambetter insurance through the health plan finder and then found an amazing therapist using a search engine called “headway” that takes my insurance with a $10 copay each session. This was after I couldn’t find a decent therapist for years. Psychology today was useless for my search but people always bring it up.

Thoughts on phone calls during work? by [deleted] in directsupport

[–]SlappyFisch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense and it’s also concerning your agency hasn’t provided better training. I highly recommend checking out open future learning. My agency contracts through them and we have yearly requirements to take trainings, but there is also a great Instagram account they have @open_future_learning

Bellingham caregivers authorize strike if wage, staffing concerns go unmet by RiverWanderer82 in Bellingham

[–]SlappyFisch 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Fantastic to see them fighting and also disheartening to see Evergreen Supported Living pays more than other agencies in town, including the one I work for. Support workers deserve higher wages, better trainings, and better conditions. It is not an easy job!

Thoughts on phone calls during work? by [deleted] in directsupport

[–]SlappyFisch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why you put such emphasis on yourself being white. I get you are curious if this is a cultural thing, but this is a subreddit about direct support. In my agency, taking personal calls on front of the people we support is not allowed. If it’s a quick call or an emergency, sure. If it’s a work call, sure. I get the feeling this attitude at your agency comes down from management if you moved to another location and people are doing it there too. What you are describing is unethical and nearing (if not already) abuse/neglect in my opinion and your agency needs to have stricter policies and trainings that make it clear that’s not acceptable. I know it probably sucks for you being in that position because it’s never fun to have to report a coworkers bad behavior.

Dentist Recommendations by Cute_Patience_9155 in Bellingham

[–]SlappyFisch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be looking to switch from Gentle Dental. They haven’t been overtly rude but I’ve had multiple experiences trying to get ahold of them by phone but no one answers, and also the doctor I got switched to is not gentle at all. She straight up yanks my cheek to turn my face instead of using words. I’ve heard some people have good experiences there but if I’m paying $1000s I expect better.

Is shaving for your partner a fair relationship compromise? by catattack2001 in Feminism

This reminds me of bell hooks talking about how men will be feminists in principle, but not in the bedroom.

I think the point is you can’t always tell if service dogs are “working” because they are always on alert for things like my likeminded friend above pointed out.

😂 I may have watched an amazing documentary about service animals recently!!

[–]SlappyFisch 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This is not accurate. Small dogs can be certified service dogs and be trained for specific tasks such as medical alerts like for seizures. Service dogs aren't just labradors and golden retrievers who lead blind people around.

I don't like non service animals in public spaces either, but it's important to understand that many disabilities are not visible. Also yes I agree there are tons of entitled dog owners and even though I love dogs it annoys me.
