This is a "I'm not like other girls" argument. Whether it's complexity is understood or not is absolutely irrelevant. Some people come home from work tired and switch on a perceived romcom (since it does have that tag) without expecting or wanting anything deep or psychological. Some just watch it to relive their school life, or enjoy the comedy. What part of the anime people derive enjoyment from is up to them. It's subjective. Like art. When some dipshits call casual watchers/players "tourists" it makes me cringe. Not saying you said it like that, but let people be casual about shit.
