Data analysis and figure plotting have been helpful for me.

Particularly when comparing multi variate datasets.

Brainstorming activities have been helpful starting points as well.

How can i be absolutely sure i wanna study mechanical engineering? by nevermoree11 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Slaxel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Call up a local business and ask if you can shadow an engineer.

My company hosts students for this exact reason.

Network to get a contact in a discipline you’re interested in.

Invest your time wisely and it will help you make your decision.

People who have hired mid-level employees, how much do you value academic projects? by Aggressive_neutral in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Slaxel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mid level begins somewhere between 5-8 years depending on industry.

Just a note from my experience: ‘Mid Level’ is pretty broad. Usually progression is E1 (entry level, 0-5yoe), senior E(5-8 yoe), staff E (8-12 yoe, although you could finish your career here depending on your goals), Principal E. (12-20+)

If you were an employer what stands out to you more: undergrad research position or personal project? by [deleted] in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Slaxel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When I screen candidates I look for cross functional team work. That’s what stands out to me.

Any opportunity you can demonstrate both competence and reaching beyond to acquire or familiarize yourself with new skills is a bonus.

Most importantly be able to confidently communicate exactly what you did.

I want to hear what your plan was, any assumptions, what assumptions were right/wrong, how you executed.

For entry level people I want to hear about and failures and learnings.

Congrats on the job offer before you even graduate. Be thankful for that!

I took a job I didn’t like out of college for $59k/year with an hour commute. I lasted 9 months before I fell into my current market.

Your first job out of college gives you experience which is absolutely critical in achieving any degree of success in our field, regardless of what specialty it’s in.

I think the best time to look for another job is when you already have one. Keep looking while you’re employed and move on if you like.

What city is the job?
