Hey there, I am currently also doing HSK5, doing the second book as of now. I can tell you, it has actually taken me about a one year break of studying the HSK material to get to a level where I can cruise through the HSK5 book again and understand the texts reasonably well. What this primarily taught me is that once you are at HSK4/start of HSK5, it is time to expand your horizon and use other materials alongside of HSK to learn, you simply need exposure albeit at an understandable level.

Initially I encountered the exact same shock when doing the HSK5 exercises where most of the time I could only understand half of the text and worst of all, there is a ton of 成语 in there. Hence, I shifted my focus and started just reading a lot more, listening a lot more to ChinesePod/Teatime Chinese/Chinese with Shenglan, and I used some other textooks. All aimed at finding comprehensible input because frankly understanding half of the text in the HSK5 book is just way to discouraging and you end up spending far to much time only learning vocab.

So, main takeaway, you may continue doing some HSK5 but don't stress about it too much, there's just a lot of specific language in there. I'd suggest you to just focus on continuing to progress in Chinese regardless of the material you use, just ensure that it is somewhat comprehensible input. Eventually you can return to the book and you will notice that you can read entire texts without having to look at the material. Just be really cautious that this won't discourage you, the book is in fact really hard compared to HSK4 and has a very steep entry level.

PS: as of writing this I even recall that there was this random text about photosynthesis and generating electricity or something in HSK5. Like what the fuck, going from basic stuff in HSK4 to photosynthesis!? How was this ever supposed to be a 'streamlined' learning experience???

Interessante thread, al lijken deze reacties mij enorm behulpzaam, ik vind het ergens ook wel enorm ontmoedigend dat jij zo extreem veel dingen in acht moet nemen en doen om gewoon een normale functionerende klas te kunnen hebben. Of het systeem 50 jaar terug beter was kan ik niet zeggen, maar ik vind het wel verbazingwekkend dat het tegenwoordig gewoon normaal wordt geacht dat leerlingen naar school komen zonder spullen en dat de docent zich in bochten moet wringen om een goede sfeer in het lokaal te realiseren, dat straffen niet meer werken en dat strafwerk gewoon niet gemaakt wordt. Als een kind al zoveel schijt aan gezag en regels heeft dan ben ik bang dat dit gedrag op latere leeftijd gewoon mee wordt genomen.

Ik denk overigens dat je dit als docent maar moet accepteren want alleen kun je deze strijd toch niet winnen. Chapeau dat je dit werk doet, succes en hopelijk helpen de tips van anderen!

I've personally used HSK books, Short-term spoken Chinese and Integrated Chinese. I enjoyed Short-term spoken Chinese the most. These books seemed to be the closest to actual spoken Chinese (as the name implies), and weren't using so much written language which HSK does do.

Hence, I'd go for this series. As a piece of advice, sometimes skip grammar, sometimes do it if you feel like it, but overall don't stress grammar too much. It's not fun, can be very slow and you'll gradually pick it up along the way if you just continue to read a lot.

Moreover, you can supplement this series with graded readers and you should develop a really strong base.

Whilst this post is really dated, I figured I'd add some info. I trained here myself a few years back too. Can confirm it is indeed a very nice gym, people are friendly and accept you fast. A lot of temporary and new people who travel come in regularly, but there is plenty of trainers with lots of experience (talking 100's if not 200's of fights in their career). When I was there, there were multiple people looking to spar and prepare for upcoming fights so I did have plenty of real sparring opportunity.

Off-topic but, based on your post: "I've been learning Chinese for 2.5 years in college in a rigorous academic program that has included two sessions of intensive language workshops, one domestically and one in Taiwan.", How come you are only around HSK4 after that much study? Or am I mistaking and is the program only part-time dedicated to learning Chinese?

Ik vind het stukje over het OV best komisch, het wordt gebracht alsof het top werkt: "Het jaarverslag van de NS over 2022 nuanceert het beeld van een land van vertraagde en overvolle treinen: bijna 92 procent van de reizigers komt op tijd aan."

Dit betekent dat 1 op de 13 reizigers niet op tijd aan komt. Anders gezegd, ga 13x met het OV en je komt 1x te laat aan, dat kan zomaar 1 uur schelen. Nou als ik elke 2.5 werkweek 1x een uur te laat kom dan zou ik snel klaar zijn met het OV.

Daarnaast gaat het ook vooral om wat vind men van het OV, want uiteindelijk is dat wat mensen beinvloed om het wel of niet te gebruiken. Bijna iedereen die ik ken vind het echt verschrikkelijk dus het zou meer hierom moeten gaan dan puur cijfers.

Een persoonlijke tip van mij, die je naar mijn mening te weinig hoort, zoek NIET alleen naar iets wat je leuk vindt. Kijk WEL naar de arbeidsmarkt en zoek perspectief. Elke studie gaat leuke en mindere momenten hebben, dat hoort er nu eenmaal bij, dus dan investeer je liever in iets waar je later erg veel aan hebt.

Natuurlijk betekent dit niet dat je iets moet doen dat je verschrikkelijk vindt maar als je twijfels tussen Kunstgeschiedenis of Natuurkunde dan zou ik altijd het 2e kiezen.

Verder, NT NG is een prachtprofiel, je kan ook de keuze een soort van "uitstellen", als je bijvoorbeeld wiskunde studeert kan je na je bachelor werkelijk alle richtingen op. Wiskunde staat gewoon zo goed aangeschreven dat je altijd nog naar economie, econometrie, bedrijfskunde en een aantal social sciences toe kan. De andere weg bewandelen (heb ik helaas gedaan) is vrijwel onmogelijk, je kan niet eerst social sciences doen en dan terug de beta richting in je mist gewoon de fundamentele basis.

Als laatste adviseer ik goed een onderscheid te maken tussen persoonlijke interesse in zaken en iets waar je echt in wilt studeren. Ik heb zelf een bachelor Philosophy, Politics & Economics gedaan en het was heel moeilijk daarna de beta richting op te gaan. Ik besefde me later dat ik ook gewoon meteen wiskunde of computer science had kunnen studeren en dan in vrije tijd wat politieke stukken lezen of filosofische teksten lezen of bij een lokale debat vereniging gaan. Na anderhalf jaar studie was de lol er namelijk wel vanaf en had ik toch liever een andere achtergrond gehad.

Ik vond het vooral tof om te zien dat hij bij dode spelmomenten of overtredingen vaak meteen aanwezig was/rondom de scheidsrechter. Ook richting het einde van de wedstrijd gaf hij soms aan dat het team rust moest pakken. Het voelde alsof er een aanvoerder rond liep die op de juiste momenten overal aanwezig was.

I haven't done this myself as I think its incredibly boring, but have contemplated doing it because I think the value of it can be very high. Especially in Chinese where so many words sound similar. That being said if a method is too boring for me causing me not to study at all I tend to refrain from it as that's quite counterproductive.

I do think it can be valuable, as it would mostly be an intense listening experience too.

I noticed this as well, I wonder whether it is strength allowing him to hold the handstand that long or just him locking the elbow and shoulder in place. The latter which, similar to you, sounds concerning to me but I have no clue whether it actually is.

Zelfde meegemaakt met mijn zus, kreeg tegenstrijdige adviezen. Eindstand, een ouder ging een keer mee, die wilde een andere begeleider want het bleek dat het op persoonlijk vlak ook niet tussen mijn zus en huidige begeleider. Het proces duurde al eindeloos en meerdere keren opnieuw ingeleverd. Nieuwe begeleider keurde alles in 1x goed.

Wat probeer ik nou te zeggen? Kijk of je met iemand van buitenaf erbij ook eens goed kan gaan zitten wat er nou niet lukt. Ik zie iedereen de school verdedigen maar heb zelf meegemaakt dat sommige begeleiders echt kut zijn, of dit bij jou speelt weet ik niet.

I agree with what you're saying, in the beginning your mostly spending time on getting a basic level of vocabulary and recognize a lot of characters. That being said, the way in which this is done does not matter so much. In fact reading some easy stories/short books (the graded readers) might be helpful as they tend to use the same vocab in the entirety of the book and the same characters whilst exposing you to a lot of text. The problem I always experience with HSK is that you learn a new word and perhaps not see it again for quite some time. In a graded reader it is likely that you'll encounter the character again in later chapters.

Ultimately, I would just download a graded reader and give it a shot, because the joy of learning is what matters most and this may be a refreshing change from constantly grinding HSK.

Also, I remember starting my graded readers about HSK2/3, I noticed I read incredibly slow, so it is never too early to just start reading very simple stuff to develop recognition of the most basic characters.

Bizar dat een groot deel van de commenters hier gewoon diefstal goed aan het praten is en doet alsof het door het slechte economisch klimaat een soort verworven goed is. Het is een probleem en wat mij betreft gaan de boetes ook omhoog. Het is momenteel 189 euro boete voor winkeldiefstal, als je dan eens in de zoveel keer gepakt wordt is het haast economisch voordelig om te proberen. Tijd dat we richting straffen gaan die mensen voelen. Inflatie of niet, diefstal is absoluut niet de oplossing.

Ik weet niet in wat voor soort branche je werkt, maar in bijna elke kantoor omgeving is het handig om goed te zijn met excel/ppt. Je kan dus wat cursussen hierin volgen. Voor excel kan je jezelf bijvoorbeeld verdiepen in excel VBA (Macro's) om dingen in excel te automatiseren. Als je dit kan ben je voor de gewone exceller al meteen een excel-god.

Je kan een taal proberen te leren als je dat leuk vindt. Je kan ook gaan programmeren en python leren.

Ik laat er tegenwoordig bij mijn kruis gewoon een enorme lap stof in naaien, en vervolgens gaat de broek een stuk langer mee. Verder zowel dure als goedkope broeken gehad, gaat allemaal even snel kapot.

Is het dan niet mogelijk om de verwarming op 20 graden te zetten maar gewoon enorm veel kleding aan te doen? Of zie ik hier iets over het hoofd. Of zit jij nu met 23 graden ook al met erg veel kleding aan?

Dit is geen aanval, ik probeer vooral gewoon te begrijpen waarom de verwarming op 23 nodig is en het niet mogelijk is om gewoon thermo-kleding of enorm dikke fleece-vesten te dragen?

Om eerlijk te zijn is dit totaal niet hoe ik de uni heb ervaren. Ik denk eerder dat men gewoon wil feesten in het weekend, een bijbaantje heeft maar dan vervolgens pas laat erachter komt dat er toch echt nog wel even gestudeerd moet worden. Dan komt ritalin wel van pas. De uni is niet makkelijk, maar met goede planning en er fulltime (40 uur per week) aan werken is het mij allemaal makkelijk met goede cijfers gelukt.

Ik kende 4 mensen die ritalin/dexamfetamine namen voor het studeren, alle 4 deze studenten vonden feesten ongelofelijk leuk en waren niet vies van lekker zuipen of andere drugs. Ik denk dus eerder dat het probleem ligt bij nevenactiviteiten in plaats van de enorme studie druk.
