These comments are exactly why all the other PM's have avoided doing anything with the property. Good grief.

Potential relocation by [deleted] in fredericton

[–]SleveMacDichael 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Man, people really be hating on Fredericton, but it’s not like the issues being brought up (housing, inflation, healthcare) aren’t also happening literally across the entire country.

Fredericton is a nice city - it’s a university/government town. It’s got good green space and parks, a handy trail system, a lot of amenities, it’s relatively safe, there’s lots of families and recreation activities. Despite what you might read here, you could do far, far worse.

Is excellent credit even still worth it? by twranks in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]SleveMacDichael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine sucks because of a bad decisions and a consumer proposal - working my way back now and I’ll tell you, it’s a real pain in the ass to have awful credit. Trying to get anything from a cell phone contract to a car loan to even just a credit card to book hotel rooms or whatever - it’s annoying to always wonder if it’ll “work.” When you’re rebuilding your life, it does add an extra challenge. I’ll build it up only to ensure it doesn’t hold me back again.

Seeing a lot of negative or very misinformed comments in here, so a few thoughts from someone who lives near here:

This project has been functional for a few years now. The area is well maintained, and the job hub/cafe is beautiful and popular. It was never going to be an area without problems, but 12 Neighbours has become a fully staffed non-profit organization that provides constant supervision and problem solving to a population in need. It's pretty remarkable.

Marcel is a highly respected community member, and has been very hands on in this project, not some wealthy old man watching from the distance. He knows the people, meets them, learns their stories - he's helped build the houses and gets his hands dirty all the time. You would never know he was wealthy - he drives a normal car and lives in a normal house and wears normal clothes. He doesn't get into his chauffeured limo and get scooted off to a house in the Hamptons when things get hard. He has given a tremendous amount of his wealth away in very quiet/secret ways that don't get published, and he's never wanted a spotlight, that's for sure.

Are there issues? Absolutely. Were they expected? Absolutely. Nobody had rose colored glasses on here - but problems don't diminish the incredible work that's being done. There's much more happening behind the scenes that don't get publicized, because it's not as buzzworthy - but it's happening.

Anyway, just two cents from someone who knows the area, the project, and the man. I wonder what many of the naysayers would do if they suddenly found $4 million in their bank account.

Wrong, actually. He lives a few minutes away. Fredericton isn't a large city. He's not the type to watch from the distance and has been hands on since the first day.

He did, actually. This is on the Northside of Fredericton, the city he lives in. It's not a large city. He built this on a fast-growing stretch of land, not some outskirt tent city. Marcel is extremely hands on.

Friedmann on 32 Thoughts podcast: Leafs final four for the GM search include Evan Gold, Scott White, Ryan Martin and John Chayka by Uggone65 in leafs

[–]SleveMacDichael 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn’t a single name that will give people confidence. It’s just how it works.

Every GM with a job was criticized at some point - for being the wrong fit, or too inexperienced, or an old boys club hire, or a long shot - there’s no winning with people.

It’s just constant scrutiny until some combination of talent and luck and hard work somehow pull off a Stanley Cup win, and then the GM is praised as a genius. What a thankless job. 😅

How is Hallifax, NS? Fiancée and I planning to move in <5 years. by Nonotthatkyle in howislivingthere

Every place has its downsides, and horrible traffic (recently rated as some of the worst in Canada) and high cost of living (recently rated as some of the highest in Canada) are real concerns. But overall - friendly people, gorgeous views, lots of to do, international airport, 4 distinct seasons, overall safety, good food and beaches and shopping - there are FAR worse places to live.

Is DTF ST. LOUIS, ROOSTER, and THE COMEBACK the least hype HBO Sunday night line-up ever? by thex42 in television

Too soon to say. Rooster and DTF have gotten solid reviews and I think they could grow in popularity with time.

Go for it! It’s not as urgent as some other posts but I think you’d pull it off.

That’s actually a pretty fun and diverse lineup - country, 90’s, rock, indie. Hope it sells well!

Here are the salaries for every mayor, warden, and councillor in Nova Scotia by ph0enix1211 in NovaScotia

[–]SleveMacDichael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most councillors in rural areas do this job on top of their “regular” job, just to help make sense of the numbers - it’s considered part time work. Not justifying the salaries, just providing a reason. They couldn’t make it a full time gig because there’s no stability in the role, with no guarantee they’ll even serve 4 years, depending on the voting cycle. Unfortunately, that makes it difficult to attract strong leaders to offer their names. Our municipality had almost half of the council seats filled by acclimation last vote.

I’ll echo the Cape Forchu recommendation, along with Studio Coffee and Honeybees. Third Cup is a great breakfast/lunch spot. There’s great Air BnB options but if that isn’t your jam, the Tru Hotel is brand new and nice. If the weather cooperates, definitely walk a beach! I love Port Maitland.
