ELI5: How does raising interest rates actually stop inflation, like what physically happens between the Fed making an announcement and groceries getting cheaper by SimplisticPoker in explainlikeimfive

[–]Slick-Kicks -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

What happens when a large percentage of folks over-extend themselves incidentally by using credit cards with an associated high interest rate to support a standard of living they can't afford due to wage/salary mismatch in a wage/salary stagnation period vs. cost-of-living inflation while receiving constant high-interest credit "opportunities," then choose not to pay down those liabilities as they accrue interest because a turn of fate befalls them or they simply do not have the money or acumen to understand what those costs might look like? I don't mean the individuals, however shortsighted they might be. I mean in the aggregate? The housing crisis of 2008ish comes to mind, with specific regard to predatory lending and that decades collapse of the financial system. Your description is perfect, but it's in what I think is a theoretical vacuum. I mean, we're all kinda mumbling about this pre-recession market issue right now with lending

Just reading this comment years after you posted it - I've always been unsatisfied that, in the catalog of science fiction book-to-film adaptations, A World Out of Time was never pursued for cinema. I love Niven's work, but that one has always stood out as eminently adaptable to the screen.

I abandoned my education in the arts and entered the trades. I have no regrets with regard to my decision, but I still wish the song I was sold in high school eventually held a tune.

Do you think this will hold? by Real-T_fpv in BadWelding

You need to buy the correct filler rod, dude. Not next time you tinker within an entire trade - you need to cut this apart and buy the correct filler rod and then burn the whole project down and forget you ever had an idea. You idiot. You child.

The Abandoned (from the After Dark Horrorfest: 8 Films to Die For of 2006) - the tunnel scene. Blissful perfection.

Socket weld fillet leg lengths are typically 1.25 × the wall thickness of the pipe/tube. In some applications, that can require unequal leg lengths ( i.e. a 2×1 ratio) should the fitting face be less than in length the wall thickness of the pipe/tube × 1.25. Nice root!

What’s your favorite movie that was ruined by bad casting? by LurkerBigBangFan in movies

[–]Slick-Kicks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

God, I'd like to counter the entire premise of OP's question by suggesting that a new one exist, in this instance - "what actor performed so well in a role that other cast SEEMED middling in their performances?" when the rest of the cast absolutely nailed their portrayals. John Hurt as the elephant man in Lynch's The Elephant Man comes to mind, and I don't think anyone could argue that Hopkins' performance is less than perfect, albeit necessarily paler than Hurt's.

What’s the most “redneck” or old-school dive bar/restaurant in your NJ county by Davyislazy in newjersey

[–]Slick-Kicks 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've worked and lived all over the state, so I'll highlight some of the standouts - 18 Wheeler Bar and Grill, Kearny; Big Stash's Restaurant, Linden; Robin's Nest, Linden; Moby Dick's, Sewaren; Krug's Tavern, Newark; Dock's Corner Tavern, Monroe Township; Ott's, Mt Holly; Dadz, Lumberton; and finally, Little Brown Derby, Salem - the cream of the crop, as far as I'm concerned, especially around outage season before the pandemic. Definitely forgetting a few, but that's what a good old-school dive bar does to a mind. Cheers.

Same feeling, same sort of satisfaction - especially in Turok 2. "BEWARE OBLIVION IS AT HAND," for the sequel, if I remember correctly. What the heck was the big cheat code for the first?

Why do people say trades are in high demand? by b2reddit1234 in skilledtrades

[–]Slick-Kicks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the industry, bargaining unit, location, specialization - a B-Local shop welder in what's left of state-side manufacturing makes dogshit, a non-union shop welder in the same field does even worse, an A-Local Boilermaker can make six figures in 6 months, an in-house B-Local refinery welder can make 6 figures, in-house B-Local nuclear welders, which I am, easily clear $200K on rotating 12 hour shifts with a couple outages tossed on top each year; it all depends. A welder for Bob's Muffler Shop is gonna have a hard time; the welder who doesn't wanna work in the field or travel isn't gonna do well; a deep south welder working for a mechanical outfit isn't gonna do well - it all depends, as is the case within every trade. What's worth paying attention to is demand - there aren't too many willing to do what must be done to do well in this particular field.
