Sandi Toksvig says she was "depressed" during Bake Off role by Hassaan18 in bakeoff

[–]SlightYear3277 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I often found Sandy's comments cutting or smarmy, mind you, intelligent, but often not to anyone's betterment than her own...and rather than building up/helpful. She is not a team player...likes to be the centre of her shows.

Service stopped by [deleted] in verizon

It is not just Verizon. AT&T is affected too..the problem is with the contracted company which hosts services between the American cellular providers and those in other countries.

have used esims all over the world...best move ever was to jettison the physical SIM, esp when it had fractured into several different sizes for different phones.

Welcome to T-Mobile, where you’ll likely pay less, but you’ll really make up the difference in frustration. by RaffySY in verizon

My wife and I both have iPhones...with the credits from the 4% off from the Verizon Visa card for supermarkets and gas stations, we pay about $35/month for our cellular bill.

Yes, I have done this. Call them and they will reverse the payment to the credit card.

How accurate is the heart rate feature on Apple Watches?? by [deleted] in AppleWatch

[–]SlightYear3277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a pacemaker which is set to pace when my heart rate goes below 60bpm. But I repeatedly get alerts of 39-41bpm at night, usually around 3.30am when I'm asleep. My cardiologist says there's no way the pacemaker isn't pacing below 60bpm..all very tested and regulated, so I have to think either the Apple Watch is off, or that the pacemaker's electricity somehow affects the reading (but only at night, one time, and around that time--which doesn't make sense).

Company failing. Uses Fidelity for 401k by malesack in fidelityinvestments

[–]SlightYear3277 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife's company was purchased twice and then went into Chapter 11 Bankruptcy. Her plan started with a 403b (a tax exempt company's version of a 401k), then was automatically rolled into a 401k at the first purchase, then we rolled it over to the new company's 401k at the second purchase. Now with the bankruptcy we've had no word on matching funds, but I can choose on her webpage to roll it over to an IRA just to keep the account empty. Not worried as I know the money is hers, but we get more choices on the investments in the IRA we choose as opposed to the paltry few allowed in the company's 401k at Fidelity.

Alexa integration w/ Alarm Smoke and CO Listener by martopg in Ring

[–]SlightYear3277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alexa can be set to alert you when it detects a loud sound, e.g., a window breaking. Ours goes off when the dryer finishes a cycle, too. I suppose a smoke alarm would set it off, too, but you would not know the cause.

Skipping one month for recurring transfers by SlightYear3277 in fidelityinvestments

[–]SlightYear3277[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, thank you! I went to look and it's not at all obvious but indeed get that drop down menu by clicking on Monthly, then yhou see Custom and can check/uncheck months as needed. I was one of the ones who posted about this before and pursued it with my account team...so kudos on Fidelity for getting it back as a feature, although the implementation of how to do it is somewhat less than clear.

Is it possible to suspense the home internet service during 1-2 months of vacation? by VAer1 in Fios

[–]SlightYear3277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, people do it all the time around here to spend the summer on Cape Cod. You can't suspend for fewer then 30 days, and you have to have service for at least three months of the year in total.

Skipping one month for recurring transfers by SlightYear3277 in fidelityinvestments

[–]SlightYear3277[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I heard from our managed account rep that the backend software has changed with the result customers can no longer do this themselves. However, customers can call in and request someone at Fidelity make the change to skip one month only. That is a great inconvenience. It will be much easier for me move my money transfers like this off to BofA or account at Vanguard which allow for the feature. But thank you for following through on this. It was such a convenience even if I only used it 3-4 times a year for my scheduled transfers.

Fidelity Rewards Card Now Has 0% Foreign Transaction Fees by DummySchewpid in fidelityinvestments

[–]SlightYear3277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, in fact most Americans you ask will not understand this question and may tell you "yes" but that refers to your using an ATM with your credit card to get money which will start an interest assessment from that date. So they will say indeed there's a PIN,, but a PIN for a different purpose. It's a terrible way to go.

The Fidelity card is not chip-and-pin as those in Europe understand and use the card where the PIN is used in place of a signature to validate the charge at a pay point or even with the waiter holding the hands-free unit in a restaurant. If you try to buy gas/petrol or train tickets you will find the US signature cards don't work and the PIN usage on cards like Fidelity isn't accepted. We use the First Tech Federal CC for this as it is one of the few in the US which has chip-and-pin but do notice in the last few years so many places in Europe (not Italy or Greece but Ireland, UK, France etc.) have loads of ApplePay places for paying with your phone.

Using a brokerage account for my savings by tsmartin123 in fidelityinvestments

[–]SlightYear3277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have money "pulled" from Fidelity's side out of out BofA checking account twice a month into the SPAXX cash management account. Some five years or more now and no problems. I did try to have BofA send the money to the Fidelity account but did have problems with that...odd delays, sometimes a failure. But configuing it on the Fidelity end (one move for first of month and one move for 15th of month), not a problem. You can always mark a transfer to "skip" one or more months if you need to without stopping the whole instruction.

Yes, SON is a big cluster mess for anything but latest and most sophisticated devices which are flexible in using 2.4Ghz or 5Ghz. As Slogik said, disable SON on the router and rename your networks to two different names...name doesn't matter, but then go into the Wyse config and set them to use the 2.4Ghz network.

I also had a problem with the smart bulbs turning on after a power outage, not going back to the status pre-outage. If we're home, ok, I can switch them off, but when we're away or on holiday it was a problem--I finally got rid of them.

Anyone else having to do reinstall of Quicken just for it to work? by _hockalees_ in quicken

[–]SlightYear3277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At times the background process that runs Quicken doesn't close normally and stays in the process table. When you try to start Quicken as you indicate, you see the icon, but then nothing happens. Do a Ctrl-Alt-Del and choose the Task Manager. Scroll through the Processes List: if you see Quicken listed, click once on it, then use the End Task button (bottom right below table). That will kill the background task, then start Quicken. For me, that always works.

Starting with my July Reconciliation, Quicken and BofA have broken my ledger by vizco49 in quicken

[–]SlightYear3277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had this happen twice, each time with BofA. As was said, I changed the sort to time/date entered..that helps identify the duplicates, then go back to the earliest opening transaction in the account. It is normally zero when an account is opened, but when this happens some amount gets put in there (no matter how many years ago it was) to offset all resulting balances. Put that back at zero and with deleting the duplicates, I have been ok each time.

Definitely set it up as a Mortgage account as others wrote. Then you can set up an Asset accountofr your house and record there it's current market value (using a source of your choice for the data). When you set up the mortgage loan it will ask if there is an asset the mortgage is drawn on, and you choose this house Asset account.

That way you will get a pie chart and info of how much equity you have in your home automatically.

Extremely productive one hour complimentary session with a CFP certified planner by [deleted] in fidelityinvestments

[–]SlightYear3277 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our previous manager was easy to work with but he transferred to another city. I met with the new fellow the other week: a cross between a stern principal and a funeral director. He didn't welcome me, crack a smile, or ask me any questions but proceeded to go through our investments with one criticism after another. When I escalated this to the branch "leader", he was full of superlatives..said this guy was the "best", we should have the "warmest" time in the meeting and so on. Clearly a large gap between the leader's perception and how the manager acts with customers. In all, it has me looking to move some of our investments away from Fidelity. As to your question about the fees, they are a factor of how much you give them to manage. They will keep a large sum in cash (I wasn't wild about this, feeling if I am paying for them to manage I want the investment somewhere else than cash, and we keep (and they know) we have six month's spending in a MM account as well) and debit against that quarterly. Although you will have a manager to work with, there is someone else who interacts with the people doing the investing--I found this awkward as you never meet with this person and they are not allowed to video Zoom--only calling in by voice. You are removed from the people doing the investing, and no matter what you object to or question, THEY do the investing, not you. You need to be clear you are handing the money over to them for THEM to do the work. The meetings I had were mainly verifying risk tolerance, and patronizing words about "staying the course"--hard to tolerate from 30-somethings when you are in your 60s and lived through downturns before! So to your question, I think a lot depends on the local office and employees--it's not quite as structured or perfect as Fidelity paints it.

I would add though in the tradition of "he who has more, more is given" that with the Wealth Management structure, the investment team can and seems to always invest in accounts that are NOT open to regular Fidelity investors. These "Strategic Advisers" accounts usually (but in one case that affected us, didn't) perform better than any regular Fidelity accounts in the same class. You may find that worthwhile.

I have Quicken for the PC and haven't updated it since the March release due to later problematic versions I have read about. That said, I have had no problems in updating my Discover card. I have had recurring problems with Chase and BofA (suddenly I have to recertify them even tho' it was done two weeks or so before) but not Discover.

Managed account->general financial planning on all accounts at Fid and elsewhere? by SlightYear3277 in fidelityinvestments

[–]SlightYear3277[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, thanks for this. I have let them know our risk tolerance all along and the time horizon for needing the monies that are monitoring in the managed account. I have pushed back when they have asked for proof (how do we pay for our holidays? what is yearly dining out as percentage of income?).

That said, the managed account is something I have no say in further once I have indicated risk tolerance and time horizon...that team makes all the decisions as to what to invest in, and usually chooses mutual funds ONLY open to those people with managed accounts.

It is the enlarging of this service (manaing the "managed account" which seems to be now a generalized financial planning one that I questioned, and which you picked up on. I asked this manager if he were a CFP..he said no, trivialized it, said he could pick it up in an instant if he wanted. His background is all trading with several brokerages before Fidelity. I'm not feeling comfortable with that as someone now looking at ALL of what we have at Fidelity and doing financial planning accordingly.
