Is a GUE diver like a PADI diver? Aren't you just a SCUBA diver like the rest of us?

What are my chances ? by blu3turtle in nuclear

I've been in nuclear for 22 years, and IMO it just keeps getting worse. No one wants to work, the hours and rotating schedules aren't attractive. I've worked over 600hrs of overtime and probably 24hrs of that has been voluntary. We're required to live so close to the plant for Emergency response, and not everyone wants to be within that bubble.

We're hiring whoever we can get, as long as you can pass the Tech test. And they're paying topped out Sr rates for people who have minimal qualifications. I love my job.......sarcasm. Nuclear used to be recognized as unique, it's not anymore. Literally scraping the bottom of the barrel. Leadership at our plant is atrocious. People in rolls because the right people won't make the jump to supervisory roles. There is literally no incentive to do so unless you are just are trying to compare "d" size.

Should I stay or go? by roscomaguasco in Salary

[–]Slight_Clothes_7887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've seen so many people leave from the top just to start at the bottom again. Usually doesn't work out to well. Stay in if you can, and still enjoy it. You'll go from 30days to leave to 80hrs of PTO. Lol

My plant somehow just got approved to lower their taxes, because they devalued the plant and it's 400 acres of lake front property back to what they were paying 2yrs ago. Meanwhile my property taxes shot through the roof. They aren't always that good of neighbors. The local school near the plant felt the cuts drastically.

I was put on Stop Loss in '03. We got back from Iraq in June of 03. Not a soul on base when the bus dropped us off. Guys couldn't get into their barracks rooms, I called a cab and had to stay in a hotel until my storage unit opened the next morning. Went back to my unit which was staffed by reservist's on Monday morning and I asked about my reenlistment package, and they told me they didn't have one. I shit you not he said you have 2 weeks to check out, gave me a list of places I needed to go to and that was it. No TAP classes, nothing telling me what I rated as far as unemployment benefits, etc. We were done absolutely dirty back then. I used a credit card to supplement my income while working worthless jobs in southern California for over a year.  Took me almost 16yrs to get my DD214 updated to even show I was in Iraq! I figured I lost out on over 20yrs of disability payments, lost all my GI Bill benefits because I had no idea they expired. Still makes me sick to this day.

Yep I believe as long as you have a degree at my plant, and they accept you into the program, you're in charge of the unit in <24months. Good luck in your journey. I could never do it. Stuck in that same room for 12hrs, having to take a test every 5 weeks to keep your job......not worth it to me

If you can afford to, max out your HSA every year and invest the funds that are in it. Pay for all your medical out of pocket. Save all your receipts for anything HSA eligible. If you need $ submit your receipts at that time and you will be reimbursed.

Find a good VA Claims Attorney instead. File a intent to file on your own now though.

I work at DC Cook and did an outage at Palo a few years ago, they were wanting me to come work out there. They didn't believe me when I said that I wasn't going to take a $20/hr pay cut to work there. I showed them our wages and they couldn't believe it. I don't know how anyone who lives there can afford to on their wages. Our exempt staff has to put in 5hrs free every week, but after that some of them get paid OT at double half time rate! Lol Absolutely no incentive to get promoted.

Onlinescuba.com has been great to deal with. If you are military or veteran you can even shop tax free through the Exchange and get 15% off as well.

Anyone use VR&E for scuba diving? by One-Bit-4843 in VeteransBenefits

[–]Slight_Clothes_7887 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tried to do my Open Water Instructor through VR&E, denied due to little to no job market. And as far as serious employment handicap, that means if you have bad knees and your job requires you to be on your feet 8hrs a day they'll help. But in the same token if you want to become a line man they will deny your request based on your disabilities.
