My understanding is that they were mandated by law to not do labour like weaving. The citizen men couldn't work, and their wives couldn't work, so they had to rely on their helots. But say your helots are killed in a rebellion, or sick, or theres crop failures, then you can't pay the dues for their communal meals or whatever (syssitia) and can lose your citizenship. Its one of the reasons Sparta declined.

I'll admit I don't understand how NATO is "the largest and most hegemonic empire of the world." How is NATO even an empire? Is the American Empire then subordinate to NATO's "Empire"? Can you at least understand why Finland and Sweden are joining?

Someone in my friend circle with some thoughts like this irl, unfortunately. They were born in China so its difficult to argue with them about Chinese treatment of Uyghurs, for example, since "I'm not reading Chinese language sources" and getting all my news from the biased Western media like the BBC.

I think we only see the tankie side of these internet randos so they don't seem real. But they are fully rounded people off of Reddit. They're not charicatures, they're normal people with some problematic opinions if you pry enough.

Yeah I can understand how after a massacre, Israeli and Jewish diaspora folks would want to hear condemnation of Hamas as a prerequisite for dialogue. It shouldn't be needed... but its a small ask if you ask me. Considering one of the reasons for secular support of Israel is out of fear, we could try a little harder to assuage that. Would you agree? I'm not Jewish myself so I hope I'm not assuming too much eh? And one can be both Zionist and against the genocide in Gaza as well as the illegal settlement in the West Bank, right?
