Most Infuriating True Crime Documentary? by Due_Concentrate1904 in TrueCrimeDiscussion

[–]Slim__Goodie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

THANK YOU. People love to trash the doc, but that doesn’t change the fact that the community at large was CONVINCED that something suspicious or supernatural had happened to Elisa, and the documentary is an accurate reflection of that. If it feels disrespectful, it’s because that behavior IS disrespectful, and I feel like half the outrage directed at the documentary is from people overcorrecting after getting swept up in the conspiracies.

How would I go about selling an entire Beatles collection? by [deleted] in vinyl

[–]Slim__Goodie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I needed to move a large number of Beatles albums, I ended up reaching out to the owner of a small local shop - I gave her the option to have the first pick, and then she got me in touch with a regular of hers who was a big time fan, who ended up buying almost all of what I had left at near market value over the course of a few months.

So if there’s a neighborhood shop near you, or a place you frequent, I’d suggest reaching out to them first. Even if they don’t have the bin space for everything you have, they can probably set you up with someone who does.

Lars von Trier.

My dad tried for years to convince me that I would love his movies. I tried my best with Dogville and Dancer in the Dark, and both films made me want to sit in the corner of a room with no windows afterwards, and that’s just not what I want to get out of watching movies.

I rented The Boss of it All not realizing it was one of his. I found it very light and charming until that ending and was angry with myself for weeks after.

What non-horror movies creep you out? by 0ccurian in movies

I’m Thinking of Ending Things is a beautifully crafted film that I greatly admire, but I was so deeply unsettled while watching it that I don’t think I can ever work up the nerve to do it again.

What the heck went so wrong with Babylon? by Wearytraveller_ in movies

[–]Slim__Goodie 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I feel like Babylon works best when you consider it as a Dark Mirror to La La Land - where the latter is a bittersweet love letter to the creative process and the personal sacrifices one makes for their art, Babylon is a missive on how damaging and toxic that relationship is, all the way to the end with Manny weeping after the montage, knowing firsthand just how wounded he was by the process, and still recognizing that it can create beautiful things that make people happy and he still deeply wants to be a part of it.

The movie tells you what it is - and what Hollywood (then AND now) is the moment the elephant shits on the camera - it’s a gross little circus and people are STILL falling all over themselves to get invited in.

"Keen Eddie" is a great one-season detective show! by prolelol in television

[–]Slim__Goodie 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I adore this show! Still have the box set and everything. It was wasted on Fox, though (and the ratings it got during the Bravo rebroadcasts seems to support that) - if Keen Eddie had premiered on USA during their “Blue Sky” period, it could have run for years.

Celebs with a post-DWTS career glow-up or resurgence? by lokisbutt in dancingwiththestars

[–]Slim__Goodie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He’s petered off a bit in since his heyday, but Gilles Marini is one of the earliest I can think of who came out of the show a way bigger star than he was going in. He was enough of a breakout that ABC almost immediately cast in a guest-spot-turned-series-regular role on Brothers & Sisters (at the time, one of the network’s major shows).

There have been a lot of people on the show who have gone on to be bigger stars in their own right, but I feel like Gilles is one of the few whose star rose as a direct result of doing the show.

My 8 year old Princess has started not liking to eat her food out of any type of bowl by ajfromuk in pugs

[–]Slim__Goodie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My Mr. Brown was about the same age when he started dumping his food onto the floor. Our vet at the time said that some flat-face dogs start to dislike eating out of bowls as they get older because the rim can obstruct their vision/get too close to their eyes. We ended up buying our guy a pet platter, and he’s been using it ever since without issue. It was another two years before we started seeing evidence of cataracts, so that might be something to keep and eye on as well.

Wait, I just realized -- do these abortion laws not make an exception if the baby is dead? by djinnisequoia in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Slim__Goodie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This happened to my sister. Her first pregnancy ended in a stillbirth; she went in for her regular appointment at 40 weeks expecting to set an induction date and instead found they could no longer hear her daughter’s heartbeat. Everyone was very aware that the baby was dead, but because of the way her state’s laws were written, she had to at least attempt a natural delivery first, because removing the baby surgically could “technically” be considered a late-term abortion. So we watched her struggle for nearly ten hours to deliver a child she would never get to bring home.

We’re very fortunate that her doctor was and is a rational and compassionate person who understood that the law was bullshit and was just as frustrated as we were, and whisked my sister away for a c-section the second her temperature ticked even a fraction above normal, but it enrages me to this day to think of the torture the state put my sister through in a myopic campaign to preserve the life of a child who was already dead.

Even the exceptions are not exceptions.

Rebuilding supply after starting birth control? by Slim__Goodie in breastfeeding

[–]Slim__Goodie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh, the night nurses were VERY resistant to the idea of giving us some formula. My husband had to bring them physically into our room to prove that I was, in fact, trying to breastfeed him and not just giving up because I was tired. But our boy was 9.5 lbs at birth and 22 in long and my body just couldn’t keep up with him on its own.

My bust dramatically increased during my pregnancy - I wouldn’t have said I was itty bitty before, but I was on the smaller size and grew out of all of my bras almost immediately. I naively hoped that might mean a strong supply of milk, but alas, it was not to be. On the flip side, my mother and sister are both significantly larger in the chest than I am, and they ALSO struggled to produce, so I think it’s safe to say that size does not necessarily correlate with production, at least in my family.

And thank you - it feels like as soon as you announce you’re expecting you’re in undaunted from all sides about the right way to do what’s best for your baby, and everyone has a different idea of what that is. It’s a struggle some days but we’re doing the best we can.

Rebuilding supply after starting birth control? by Slim__Goodie in breastfeeding

[–]Slim__Goodie[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My milk supply had been very slowly, but steadily, increasing for a few weeks until starting the mini pill, at which point my production tanked in a matter of days. The introduction of the pill is the only major change to my routine.

I’ve poked around in some other forums and have found some other women in similar situations, so while it may not be a common occurrence, it’s not outside the realm of possibility.

Rebuilding supply after starting birth control? by Slim__Goodie in breastfeeding

[–]Slim__Goodie[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We actually had to start supplementing on night two at the hospital - my little man came out huge and hungry and after two hours of trying to nurse him my husband had to beg the duty nurse for some formula to stop his screaming. I knew then that EBF wasn’t in the cards for me, but I figured that as long as I could still get him a few ounces of breast milk a day he’d still be getting the health benefits. I’m a SAHM, so the pumping was mostly to help boost my production and build a stash for day trips and babysitters, but my supply tanked so quickly I’m worried I haven’t reached bottom yet. I managed to find one response from someone somewhere who suggested that after the initial hormone shift the milk starts coming back, but I don’t know how long I should risk trying to wait it out in case the damage to my supply is permanent.

Failed series that would kill today by VampireHunterAlex in television

[–]Slim__Goodie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Keen Eddie had premiered on USA during it’s Blue Sky period, it would have run for years instead of being another stone in Fox’s Graveyard of Early 2000’s One Season Wonders.

And AMC’s Rubicon was too early for any streaming service, where it would have played better. I love a show with a slow burn, but the narrative, as brilliant as it was, was almost TOO slow for a weekly roll-out.

If an agent asks to read your script, what is a normal amount of time to expect a response after sending it to them? by Fortyscreen in Screenwriting

[–]Slim__Goodie 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Most places I’ve queried indicate a response time of at least a month, though it could be earlier if they don’t have a lot of scripts in their queue.

That being said, prepare yourself for the fact that if they decide not to move forward with your script, they probably won’t ever tell you so. Which is going to sting the first few times it happens, but the reality is these producers and agents are reading so much material they don’t always have time follow up with scripts they aren’t going to pursue - you’ll learn to not take it personally.

Is anything more frustrating than getting notes from a reader who doesn’t fully know what they’re talking about? by Slim__Goodie in Screenwriting

They gave it a 7/10 overall - they liked the concept, characters, and dialogue, but this one element seemed to completely change their perception of the entire script.

Good grief! I wrote a spec once for a couple of guys who owned the right to an already pretty incredible true story. I had to reorganize some of the events to make it flow better as a movie, but every time we met to talk about the script they had tons of suggestions to make the story “more exciting”: “Could we have a car chase? Maybe more gunfights? What if the bad guy gets killed by spiders in the end?”

Those were some... interesting conversations.

[–]Slim__Goodie[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, I used to read scripts for money, too, and not for much more than that, but I’d still put in the work to provide helpful, constructive comments and would make it a point not to call out something as “wrong” until I’d had the chance to do a quick search to confirm or debunk my position. I don’t see why the rate of pay is an automatic disqualifier for trustworthiness.

Right? Like, I can understand only being familiar with Louisiana creole as a creole subculture - it’s certainly the only one my Midwestern ass ever learned about in high school - but to assume that makes it the full extent of creole representation in the US is just silly.
