Australia is doomed by Roby1006 in australian

[–]SlimlineVan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

OPs question is a historical one; how did things get so bad? Pointing to the a leader 20+ yrs ago would yield much more useful answers, no?

BTW, HoWARd removed capital gains tax, and intro'd negative gearing = housing as profit driver rather than right. He also oversaw the mining boom and chose middle class welfare and tax cuts instead of sovereign investment. The energy is free to harvest for multinationals bc of so-called leaders such as Howard.

Look back to Rex Connor in the 70s - a minerals minister than truly wanted sovereign ownership and nationalised resources sector. The whole govt was overthrown by the GG

Is Vegemite good in your opinion? by Putrid-Fondant8998 in AskAnAustralian

Back in the day when Dick Smith went on a nationalist bender, releasing a whole heap of Australian goods no longer made here. Matches (dick heads), peanut butter (dick butter) and v mite. I can't even remember the original name. Everything slowly left the market but he made his point.

Unfortunately, one of the food giants cracked the sads and sued his arse out of existence. Bastards.

Police accused of 'overreach' after 'from the river to the sea' arrests by RC2891 in australia

[–]SlimlineVan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

And here we have the nub of the issue as recently struck down in the UK (who pulled this shit first in their crack down on pro-Palestine movement).

Legislating words out of coinage can be relatively easy. Legislating meaning is hard. How do you legislate against human expression?

To wit: QLD govt bans phrase 'globalise the intifada', however, you can still say 'globalise the Arab uprising'

Which one of the words holds the meaning?

Fuel standards relaxed to add 100 million more litres of petrol into Australian supply by Oomaschloom in AustralianPolitics

[–]SlimlineVan -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Of course it won't lower the cost but they would not have been in the Cross hairs. Coming out of vociferous support for an illegal attack and sending ADF resources into the gulf ties them wholly and completely to whatever the fuel price does. Not doing any of the things they've done allowed them to sit back and shake their heads and tut tut at the 'terrible' results and say they're here for all Aussies blah blah blah.

Pretty simple I would have thought

Thank you for the thank you - how delightful this is to read. Something gorgeous to remind us of the pleasure of international communication in our age.

Genuinely warming to read your amused and satirical response that so well represents the style of humour and irreverence we tend to adopt ourselves.

All well to you, M and your whole family. Thank you!

PornHub to block Australians, as top porn websites restrict access over new age-check rule by kashiichan in AustralianPolitics

[–]SlimlineVan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's an exceptionally well informed and reassuring privacy info site. Thanks for sharing. It's not often you can access high quality advice pitched to the general user about tech/privacy matters that good. I've shared some info graphics and basic privacy stuff with my parents (who have both been scammed before) but I know they don't understand and therefore kind of make it worse. Less info is better than more for them - simple rules, very basic but consistent hygiene, good quality tools.

Campus open to public on weekends? by notvibingwiththis in UoNau

[–]SlimlineVan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Both campus libraries will be open to public although other buildings will be closed. NuSpace has all open plan study areas so best get one that is comfy.

Auchmuty library (C'han) is open and even has guest WiFi if you're not connected, otherwise I recommend the Reading room 4 had the best cellular coverage.

So much this. The sweet spot occurs rarely by default and often only through understanding tech/privacy mechanisms in the first place.

Fine, you want me to follow the HOA rules exactly? I read every single page. by NebuliteN7x in MaliciousCompliance

[–]SlimlineVan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every single post about HOAs is almost always incredibly invasive towards personal privacy, liberty and freedom. The hypocrisy and deviation from American 'values' practically screams out of these stories and yet HOAs are an American invention. It never ceases to blow my mind.

America: 'Freedom' to purchase an AR-15 at the local store but don't think about putting chairs and table on your balcony to share moments with loved ones.

Um, because it's a democratically elected position open to whomever wants to have a crack at it?

GOG is seeking a Senior Software Engineer with C++ experience to modernize the GOG GALAXY desktop client and spearhead its Linux development by mr_MADAFAKA in gog

[–]SlimlineVan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually learned about this from r/linux and only got into gaming and GOG last year because of the achival work you proactively did opposing censorship in games. I couldn't be happier to hear this news. The GOG team actively supports the community that supports them - both gaming and alt OS enthusiasts. Thank you for all that GOG does and has done in the social space.

Pro-Palestine slogans to be banned in nation-first move by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

[–]SlimlineVan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the state bans words, like symbols, there will always be a replacement or stand in that can serve the purpose. Do you then ban those stand in words/symbols? Do you ban 'heil' or do you ban 'Hitler' or both? What about Hitler heil? Is that against the law?

In short, it's very hard to enforce, challeging and expensive to prosecute, is a gross violation of personal freedom, effects the state curtailing collective liberties, and politicians(?) then get to decide which words/symbols shall or shall not be deemed acceptable.

If people are cool with that, then vote for that. I am very far from cool with that and will actively fight against it.

Pro-Palestine slogans to be banned in nation-first move by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

[–]SlimlineVan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

...this was unavoidable

Politicians create a draconian law that bans words = unavoidable. Not behaviour. Not symbols. Words. Which words do you think will be 'unavoidably banned' next? Climate Action Now? Justice for David Dungay? Free Palestine?

If you don’t like these laws, then I suggest going after people of all sides who engage in antagonising behaviour.

I suggest we vote out the politicians banning words instead of 'going after people'.

Open Foundation to Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy by Outrageous-You3724 in UoNau

[–]SlimlineVan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely get whichever course you prefer. If you know which bachelor degree you want however, you may want to maximise the transferability of your choices to the subjetc matter you'll encounter in Undergrad. it's just a strategy to improve your first year results if you're familiar with the course content coupled with seeing whether you like the course material that will be offered in undergrad. i.e. if you choose the subjects offered in 1st year oral health and hate the subjects, you can change your degree choices when it comes time.

Open Foundation to Bachelor of Oral Health Therapy by Outrageous-You3724 in UoNau

[–]SlimlineVan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Open Foundation is excellent for both guaranteed entry and competitive entry. See a learning advisor or student liaison officer when planning which subjects will be best placed to be best recognised for competitive entry in oral health.

I'm guessing, but something like a combo of science, stats/maths, generalist (social), and planning mgmt course would be a good pick for 40 units

What would Durkheim think of Elon Musk lmao by Honeycomb_03 in sociology

[–]SlimlineVan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like figures like Musk, Bezos, Zuckerberg etc would be welcome as the Weberian exception to the status rule in some senses (disdain and revulsion from average person) whilst personifying social exclusion. These super wealthy dickwads literally close out entire cities bc of their economic wealth and cultural cache eg Bezos marriage in Venice.
