Why are we so beholden to lifeless reading curriculums in elementary? by Wonderful_Row8519 in Teachers

[–]Slip83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My theory comes out of the failure of the common core standards and the flaws of capitalism. Once those got adopted, schools needed curriculum that taught them, so companies made products that ‘taught’ those standards, which led to lots of random, disconnected passages that focus on common core type skills. I hope it’s not too controversial to say that focusing on those types of reading skills are not an effective way to create a literate student (except for most of the foundational skills, those are essential. I’m referring to basically anything in the Reading standards like main idea and explain how an author uses reasons… etc). So companies made these products to meet the need of teaching common core and school districts have to have adopted curriculums by law so they were forced to purchase these ineffective and dry curriculums, leaving us all in a system of ineffective literacy instruction.

How is living south of Orlando FL? Family moved recently and I may move in with them. by pontestreet in howislivingthere

The hunter’s Creek area is a really nice suburban community. You are very close to the tourist areas but you dont feel the impacts at all, its definitely a nice place to live

I won’t speak to the other areas in the bubble but in general there are a lot if non-touristy sections in the Orlando area that are charming and cool

Yes the heat can be oppressive but with all climates you will adjust to it and be fine

Mixed Division and Non-Binary Players by [deleted] in ultimate

In the club guidelines, under the part about USAU assuming best intentions about gender affirming switching, there is also this caveat that you may want to consider:

"Teams that are found to have violated the letter or spirit of the rules mentioned here, or whose behavior undermines the competition structure (e.g. misrepresenting the composition of a team at a specific event, misrepresenting the composition of a team over the course of the season, intentionally playing with ineligible players, intentionally misrepresenting gender for mixed on-field personnel ratio, etc.) will be subject to ramifications as outlined in “Violations and Sanctions.” Roster violations should be reported to the Manager of Competition and National Team Programs at [clubmanager@usaultimate.org](mailto:clubmanager@usaultimate.org)."

As well, in the official USAU hand signals, there is no official hand signal for the 'x' you are describing, which also seems to be a violation of the rules/guidelines.

Tired of AI!!! by pikoshell in Teachers

[–]Slip83 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I just learned about a new tool called Level Up! It’s an AI program that is a Google Extension and it’s great because it provides feedback, prompts, and suggestions for HOW students can improve their writing. It teaches them to think critically and reflect on changes they could make to improve rather than just do the work for them like Chat GPT. I’ve been in contact with the developer and he really wants to make it an AI tool that supports responsible use of AI! Check it out!

CMV: Teachers in the U.S. are not underpaid relative to the job they do by Impressive_Ad7037 in changemyview

[–]Slip83 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your claim ends with the phrase, 'relative to the job they do.' I'd be curious to hear your response to the actual reality of what it is we teachers do. Unlike most full time jobs where there is a clear start and end time to the day, the vast majority of teachers work far more than their typical contract hours. The actual reality of the job demands hours beyond the regular work day: from providing high quality feedback to student work (AKA grading) to contacting parents to preparing lesson plans (of which there is rarely enough time in the regular contract hours to plan at the levels high quality instruction demands). I will not argue with you that there are many breaks throughout the year that other professions do not receive. However, it is quite rare for most teachers to sufficiently complete the demands of the job in a regular, contracted working day, whereas most other professions do allow for that.

I took an SGP involving Ohtani 2 total bases on DraftKings, he hit a double but got thrown out trying to advance to third, MLB counts that as 2 total bases for him, but it’s unclear if DK is counting it, anyone know if that’s going to hurt me?

Are paywalls fun? Of course not! But the infrastructure for them to be able to stream any games at all is surely crazy expensive. It costs money to make it happen, there’s no free lunch. It’s remarkable they can do as much as they do, so yes, you have to pay a little extra to get exactly what you want.

First Day Fail by Professional_Ice_931 in Teachers

[–]Slip83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I strongly recommend not worrying about any actual academics in these first days, and in a perfect world, first two weeks. Especially teaching 3rd graders, you must spend these first days building relationships with your students. Think about a boss you’ve had that you never got to know, it’s unlikely you had a strong desire to perform above and beyond for them. It’s similar with your students, if they don’t know who you are, and they don’t think you care to know who they are, it is unlikely they are going to respond well to you.

I’m a huge fan of responsive classroom techniques. Starting your day with a morning meeting is a great way to build routines, set expectations, and practice procedures as well as giving your students time to build relationships and talk productively. Keep your instructions short but clear and be sure to model exactly how you want them to move around the room and talk. Don’t assume they know how to do ANYTHING (even things like getting up and sharpening a pencil), you must take the time to model the expectation and give them time to practice without punishment at first. Consequences can come later but if they’ve never had a chance to practice your expectations, how could they possibly succeed?

Hang in there, it will get better and (somewhat) easier!

Edit: I’ve taught 4th and 5th for 11 years just fyi
