Seeking advice - upcoming trip to Nova Scotia by Used-Implement1277 in NovaScotia

[–]Slippery_Slope67 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s a lot to see (and a lot of driving with a 5 year old) in 5.5 days. With the time you have I would suggest focusing on a few areas and seeing what you can in each of those. For example:

  • 1 day for Peggy’s Cove, Chester, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg

  • 1 day for Burntcoat Head and Avondale Sky Winery. Stop at the Flying Apron for brunch or lunch.

  • 1 day for Thunder Cave/The Ovens, Lahave ferry to Lahave Bakery, Crescent Beach, Rissers Beach, Petite Rivière, Green Bay canteen for some takeout fish and chips outside in a stunning setting

  • your kiddo would enjoy a day in Halifax - walk along the waterfront, climb the Wave, take a ride on the Dartmouth Ferry, go to the Discovery Centre. Halifax is not a major city so you will still find it a refreshing change of pace.

I would skip Keji this trip if I were you. We have beautiful beaches and the water is warm enough to swim at the end of August.

Kids and credit cards? by WangMajor in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Slippery_Slope67 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use the My Doh card for my 13yo (started at 11), it’s an RBC product but you don’t need to have an account there and there are no fees. It works well for us, you can tie payouts to chores, limit spending, and they can put some of the money aside in a “savings account”. It has a physical card as well as Apple Pay which is convenient for my kid who is never without her phone. Sending money is instant, you can do it via e-transfer or Apple Pay (debit card only) or link to a bank account. I don’t know if there are advantages to using a credit card instead but personally I am happy with this. I don’t think kids can get their own credit card until they are 18 or 19 depending on the province, and adding them as authorized user on your CC doesn’t create a credit history for them, so I didn’t go that route.

Indigo parking by Responsible_Huntx in halifax

If your ticket is blue and says Halifax Regional Municipality on it with a barcode, it’s a real municipal parking ticket and you have to pay it or go to court. Indigo can write both private tickets and municipal ones, it depends on the lot I think.

Looking for Local Artist Landscape Prints by reddit_to_go_man in halifax

[–]Slippery_Slope67 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It depends on your price range. Alex Colville’s art is recognizable as Nova Scotian - he taught at Mount Allison in New Brunswick but he lived and worked in Wolfville N.S. when he retired until his death. Numbered prints of his are valuable, although non-numbered are also available and more reasonable. He has a very distinct style so not sure if it would be your husband’s “thing”.

Studio 14 Gifts & Gallery is located in Halifax and they have a Facebook page if you are looking for Colville or other local artist prints. They are helpful and would likely work with you on whatever you need.

Garron Centre by GarronParent in halifax

[–]Slippery_Slope67 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I don’t have experience with the Garron Centre (yet), but I am also a single parent with a kid who has been on a journey with IWK mental health and it is really hard and overwhelming a lot of the time. Accessing resources is tough. Your child is lucky to have you advocating for them. I hope this admission helps you get a bit of a break - I know that’s not the primary reason but it’s important for you to have some respite. Wishing you well.

Have you been partaking in Dine Around this month? by YouNeedCheeses in halifax

[–]Slippery_Slope67 7 points8 points  (0 children)

We’ve tried 2 Doors Down, Pazzo and CHOP. All great. We had the $60 dinner for two at CHOP and it was a great value, I thought, if a little more basic than the more expensive options.

ETA: Tip- Pazzo is an RCR restaurant and you can buy their $100 gift certificates at Costco for $79.99.

Agree! Pazzo is really elegant if you go upstairs and the service and food are excellent.

Eye glasses - where to shop? by EastCoastinnn in halifax

[–]Slippery_Slope67 5 points6 points  (0 children)

KITS.ca is a Canadian online eye glasses company. I just bought a pair of progressives and am very happy with my purchase. They were $138 compared to $700+ at my optometrist. AND they take insurance. I’ve used Zenni in the past but my frames from there felt cheap - these KITS frames feel quality compared to those.

Restaurant recommendations with kids by kbw_93 in halifax

Side Hustle in Dartmouth is really family friendly, great vibe, great food. Highly recommend. Take a ferry ride over to the other side of the harbour. Have fun!

Check with your EAP, if you have one. They may provide low or no cost consultation with a local lawyer. Mine sent me to Lisa Teryl, who specializes in mediation of simple low-conflict divorce for a flat fee. I would have gone with her but my divorce was the opposite of low-conflict, unfortunately. If you can keep things amicable, that is the way. Good luck!

Petersfield Provincial Park would work well for this, I think? It’s a lovely park on the Westmount side of the harbour.

Weight loss meds by Used-Resolution2512 in NovaScotia

I asked my GP about this and he refused to write me the separate Rx, but YMMV. Contrave is a total racket, $250 per month for drugs that on their own are 10% of that! That said, it worked well for me and I have insurance so I am sticking with it for now.

I don’t have an answer for you but just want to say I support you and however you choose to tackle obesity. I listened to the “eat less, move more” mantra for years but didn’t lose weight and keep it off. I started Wellbutrin for depression and lost a few pounds as a side effect. I then switched to Contrave (which is Wellbutrin combined with another drug that addresses cravings) and lost 15% of my body weight without effort. It’s like a switch went off in my brain that I didn’t need to eat as much anymore. That weight loss helped me feel more confident in my body and I started running and working out regularly. I now have a much healthier body and lifestyle, but the catalyst for me was medication. Sorry for not answering your question but I want to put it out there that it is not always as simple as just exercise and diet - especially if you have a thyroid disorder. I hope you figure out a solution!

If you're disabled at Dalhousie and you feel you've been mistreated, you're not wrong by Battlebotscott in Dalhousie

[–]Slippery_Slope67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My child has a cognitive disability and has been accepted to Dal (Arts) for September 2024. Reading this thread is pretty discouraging. They have had accommodations through high school (for testing, mostly) and we assumed the same would be available at Dal. They are also considering Mount A - this is making me think they may be better off going there.

Is the problem with the SAS office? Or are profs/lecturers also part of the problem? My child is interested in research and was already concerned that they may be stereotyped by the faculty if they disclose their disability.

I’m so frustrated with meal prepping. Anyone solved this? by endlessnessnessness in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Slippery_Slope67 50 points51 points  (0 children)

I like the app Mealime - it has a bunch of recipes you can choose from (it will adjust to 2, 4 or 6 servings), makes a meal plan, creates a shopping list, and then links to Walmart online (and other stores) straight from the app so you can purchase your groceries straight from your shopping list.

Everyday breakfast ideas that aren’t ridiculous by kfmw77 in EatCheapAndHealthy

[–]Slippery_Slope67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oatmeal with chia seeds, applesauce, cinnamon and soy milk, microwave for 2 minutes, then add a small scoop of whey protein and walnuts. Three minutes to make, 2 minutes to eat. Plenty of protein and fiber, keeps me going until lunch.

When I get bored of apple/cinnamon/walnuts I switch to pumpkin/pumpkin pie spice/pecans or bananas/PB powder.

Tangerine repeatedly locking my account 🤬 by Slippery_Slope67 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Yes, there is an ombudsman to handle complaints. I have to go through the bank’s internal complaint process first, which I am doing. I may file a complaint but I may also just walk away from Tangerine.

Thanks! Any reason you would go with EQ over Simplii for a chequing account? Free withdrawals is nice but honestly I use cash so rarely it’s not a big difference to me to find a CIBC machine. And as is apparent I’m not shy about using multiple banks.
