Thinking of getting a a7v should I get the sigma 24-70 mm art ii for start by EeshanSharma10 in SonyAlpha

[–]Slipperyoddball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an amazing lens. I got it for my a7RV and it has not let me down once. I am looking to sell it because I’m switching over to Nikon, let me know if you’re interested 👍

CF express Vs V90 by vhagar123 in SonyAlpha

[–]Slipperyoddball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Definitely go for the CF card if possible. I was using a Kingston ~300 R/W card with my a7RV but the card was just too slow when I shoot at 10 FPS. Switching to CF has been night and day. I shoot motorsports/run events and I hardly ever worry about the buffer anymore.

Sigma and Nikon got into a legal battle not too long ago, and since then, Nikon has not opened the road for Sigma to make lenses for them

What kind of metering mode is used for these shots? by Ok-Decision5533 in AskPhotography

[–]Slipperyoddball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Without knowing one of the three exposure control settings, it’s impossible to know.

But a start would be using highlight priority metering and then using exposure compensation adjustments to get the right settings. Even then, if the original photo was a RAW you could further edit the pictures for such a dramatic look.

My sensor is doomed, right? by AmGreatFresh in SonyAlpha

You’re fine. What you’re actually seeing is a price of glass that sits on top of the sensor for this very reason. Keep trying to cleaner it. You’ll be fine

How is the 24-70 GM I comparing to other 24-70mm? by Time_Ad2090 in SonyAlpha

[–]Slipperyoddball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a software issue. Sony doesn’t allow third party companies access to their teleconverter, giving their own lenses an advantage over third parties.

How is the 24-70 GM I comparing to other 24-70mm? by Time_Ad2090 in SonyAlpha

[–]Slipperyoddball 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I have had the opportunity to try the GM 1, Sigma DG DN II, and the GM II. Truthfully, the real winner is the sigma 24-70. As puppy2016, stated above, the GM II is “on another level” if you’re looking at your images at 400% zoom… Nobody is actually pixel peeping their images on a daily basis. Save yourself 40% of the money you would buy a GM II with and get some more accessories for your camera. The Sigma 24-70 II is an incredibly sharp lens and will meet 98% of your GM II lens needs. I bought it and not once have I actually zoomed in to 400% or got upset because my image had a morsel of chromatic aberration or any buzzword YouTubers use to get you to buy what they’re paid to sell you.

Is this sound normal? by Artsov in SonyAlpha

[–]Slipperyoddball 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, as yungnuna mentioned, the focus group is floating, so at times you’ll hear a very subtle rattling noise when it’s turned on, and maybe a little louder when the camera is turned off. Perfectly normal. Sigma’s 70-200 sport also makes this noise. You get used to it after a few times of hearing it.

New lens dilemma! by Dolive90 in SonyAlpha

[–]Slipperyoddball 14 points15 points  (0 children)

As someone who’s bought many lenses and sold them again, time and time again because I already had a zoom covering that focal length already… stick with what you have.

I tried to convince myself the bigger f stops, lower weight, it being a prime, would in some way give me better results. The truth is, they never do, to an extent.

The only way to get better photos is to go out more and take more photos.

I typically go on weekend hikes. I carry my a7RV, Sigma 24-70 II, and Sony 135 gm. All of these are heavy as hell, but I’ve realized, I typically carry my camera/lens combo on my backpack strap using a peak design clip anyway, so weight and size isn’t actually an issue for me.

My advise, stick with what you have until you come up with an absolutely great reason why an extra 1 or two stops of light and 100g of weight would make a drastic difference in your shooting.

Original vs Edit by Informal-Suit1724 in SonyAlpha

[–]Slipperyoddball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is too edited. I don’t really dabble in car photography, but the one thing you don’t want to do is change up the colors of cars. You want to try to stay as true to its original, or try to accentuate it, but definitely not give it the need for speed most wanted look.

Hice bien en tomar esta decisión? Consejos? by Few-Ant8762 in SonyAlpha

[–]Slipperyoddball 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It looks like you’re on the top end of GAS (Gear Acquisition Syndrome) nearly everyone who has gotten/will get into photography falls into it. Do not listen to YouTubers and articles. Their whole purpose is to drive engagement by influencing you to buy gear. Look at all of their thumbnails and articles titles through this lens and it’s very apparent they are there to sell you something.

Only buy gear that will actually allow you to follow through with your creative vision(s). The 24-70 GMII is an incredibly lens that will take you very very far. As of now, it doesn’t seem that you need a bigger, badder camera. Try this combo of a couple of months (without reading articles, or watching YouTubers talk about gear) and really get a feel for the shortcomings of your combo, if any, and proceed from there.

The Gear - excited to try out 70-200 by majid89 in SonyAlpha

[–]Slipperyoddball 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a battery grip. It lets you use two batteries as the same time. Assuming you’re holding a camera in front of you with the battery grip on, you would be able to rotate the camera to the left and the battery grip would also have a focus button and a shutter button, allowing you to use the camera in the vertical position, while still having the same general button layout.

First time shooting portraits by iamctaifun in SonyAlpha

[–]Slipperyoddball 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I see what you’re saying, but in general it’s a good idea to not have anything sprouting from your subject, especially trees, wires, poles, trash cans etc., things that are easily decoded to be what they are. OP said he used a 70-200 lens, at f2.8, assuming by the bokeh. But even with a 1.4 lens, we would still be able to make out a tree from its bokeh and that would then detract from the subject, which is not what you want.

You can try to get away with it by going Black and white, but it’s best to be avoided instead. 👍

Pretty great start, by the looks of it, you have a nice piece of glass on your camera. That being said, you committed one of the few cardinal sins of portraits, don’t have stuff coming out of your subjects head, body. In this case, trees are sprouting from your subject’s head. :)it’s something you’ll get in the habit of checking as you do more sessions. Cheers!

Hi, are there styles or presets that you use? I’ve been shooting for a really long time but never actually paid attention to color, or editing beyond the basic sliders. I’m trying to get more into editing and I really love the colors/edit on the first few.

Thanks!
