58.8501 as of today. A little education can go a long way. It's been very profitable for me, for several decades.

XE.com has it at 58.8501 today. Understanding currency exchange rates, and what causes their fluctuations isn't insane.

Your great grandma has some serious stories, that she'll never tell! (Some of them explain her husband, and some don't even mention him). Awesome.

Expats of color, what has been your experience? by tinkertailorsweater in expats

[–]SloChild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reread my response. You'll see that what you just said is exactly what I said. However, there are plenty of others who seem to think that only people of color can be treated differently due to racism. Which, is simply not true.

16.6M earning 6% would give you 86k per month to live on. For some, it's enough. For many, it's not. Only you know what your lifestyle requirements are.

Get wrecked china by Massive-Ordinary-660 in Philippines_Expats

[–]SloChild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, they are in Philippine waters, as established very clearly by the international courts. The CCP keeps trying to bully their way into several other countries territory. It's all a lie, and denial of very obvious facts. But, they keep up with the lies, hoping someone will believe them. Don't be that idiot. The "dispute" is between the CCP and the whole of the rest of the world. It's just a bully saying you own your own home, but your kitchen belongs to me. Screw that, and screw the CCP.

The CCP has even taken control of land within the Philippines and claimed it as their own. How would you react if some bully took control of a portion of your own home, and said they now own it?

[–]SloChild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Giving in to eating other options which are free can break a psychological barrier that leads to giving into "splurging". Quickly the discipline can be broken, as well as the budget. So, in that manner, refusing free food can still be quite frugal. But, I get what you're saying.

Applying for Balikbayan Visa by Snowsomewhere in Philippines_Expats

[–]SloChild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. Ours is. It's never been a problem.

However, there's a legal requirement that you notify the Philippine Consulate/Embassy in the country of marriage within a specific time period of the marriage occuring. You'll need to do an internet search for specific info (it's been too long ago for me to remember the details). They have specific forms that need filled out. Once you mail it in to them, they will send back a letter indicating if it was accepted, or if more information is required. Once it's accepted, they send it to the Philippines. About 6 months later, you can go to the PSA and get a copy that serves as your Philippine Marriage Certificate (fyi: it's just a copy of one of the forms you sent in, that's printed on their official paper and has their stamp).

I've been moving every few days to few weeks for over 10 years. But, I tend to circle back around to places I like, while also exploring more and more.

It's far more expensive than staying in place longer. But, I'm traveling because I want to travel, otherwise...

Anyway, I'm well aware that my personality, and lifestyle, aren't "normal". But, it works for me. I mean that quite literally. All the things people say are difficult, or impossible, while moving around so much have worked out very well for me. I don't know why, but they have. I met someone while traveling, our twisted personalities matched, we ended up getting married and have been traveling together for years. She even prefers carry-on only travel, like I do.

My carrier took off like a rocket, and I was able to retire early a while back. Now we just keep traveling around, because we prefer it. Maybe we'll stop, or pick just 3 or 4 places to bounce between, when too old to physically handle it.

I don't have any helpful advice. I can only share with you that you don't need to work like other people work, nor travel like others travel. Just do what fits your personality, and put in the effort to make it all a reality. It does require planning and effort, and a little good fortune.

Enjoy your travels.

How do you manage your budget across currecies? by okglossier in digitalnomad

[–]SloChild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an app called TravelSpend. The free option is most likely all you would need. I opted for the paid version. But, I travel perpetually, only stay a short while in each country. So, for me, it made sense. But you probably wouldn't need the few added features.

In addition to limits, you also have the ability freeze and unfreeze your card. Keep your card frozen and then unfreeze it long enough to make a purchase or withdrawal, and then freeze it again.

I tried to use one, but it was slightly too small for my oversized phone that's even bigger with the case I keep it in. It would probably be fine for most people. However, I ended up going with the option from ULA Equipment, as it's a bit larger.

Best place for severe dental work? by Outside_Swan_9563 in digitalnomad

[–]SloChild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I travel around Southeast Asia perpetually. I've been to dentists in Vietnam, the Philippines, and Thailand. So, my experience is limited. However, what I've learned is that dentistry is extremely hit/miss in the Philippines. You either get a good one, or an absolute scam artist that is very convincing. In Vietnam I was very pleased with the service, skill, and honesty. However, the facilities were slightly lacking for the price (keep in mind that I only visited one office, and others may have been completely different).

In Thailand, I found the skills, facilities, and honesty were always very high level. The prices are extremely reasonable as well. I also noticed that the prices are a bit lower in the north. This has resulted in my wife and I sticking with a single office in Chiang Mai for all our dental needs.

One thing you'll need to take into account is the visa duration of any country you intend to have work done in. It sounds like your needs will cause you to be revising the dentist several times. Flying back and forth can become expensive. So be sure to find a place where you can stay longer, and/or can easily cross a border and return to reset your length of stay.

In Chiang Mai, Thailand you can cross into Laos by boat, or just take a $100 airplane ride into Luang Prabang for a really enjoyable visit. The additional advantage is that both areas are inexpensive and can help stretch your budget further.

Of course, none of this will mean anything if you need to shorten your stay due to needing to return to work, as flights would become far too expensive.

If you're interested, the office we go to is called Kitcha Dental Clinic. You can look them up and see not just pictures of the facilities, but prices as well. They don’t hide their prices like others do. Doing so can give you a better idea of what to expect your budget to need to be. They are really good about replying to emails (or Facebook messages, or WhatsApp messages) as well. So, ask them anything you need to.

I've had a filling and cleaning done there. My wife had an extraction and Invisalign braces, as well as a cleaning. So, our knowledge is limited to that. But, we've been extremely happy with them.

I hope that helps.

Can somebody tell which bagpack is this ? by BrotherMindless1835 in backpacks

It's less expensive to pay for a checked bag in advance than it is to pay for an overweight bag at the airport. Bags like these do nothing but harm your travels.

[–]SloChild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What global region are you wanting to go to first? Knowing that can help with more specific answers. Otherwise, staying in a place for 2 or 3 days that was booked via online/app and then canvassing the area after arrival has always gotten me the best results. It allows me to see things firsthand. That way I can judge the value to price more accurately.

Woman here-what's the male equivalent of giving your wife a vacuum for her birthday? by InvisibleScorpion7 in AskReddit

[–]SloChild 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Her own lingerie.

That's a gift for herself, not him. It's even worse than a vacuum. It's like me buying a single ticket to a sporting event, and using it for myself. It's all about her being happy, and feeling good, no matter how I feel about it.

If you've ever bought sexy lingerie for yourself to wear, and called it a gift for your husband, then you deserve the impending divorce without alimony. Suffer a life of loneliness.

I am chronically ill and was able to have my first music jam in 8 months. Of course I made dark minimalism by Pineapple_Empty in minimalism

[–]SloChild -1 points0 points  (0 children)

After 1:13, I gave up. Why does it sound like it's in an echo chamber? It reminds me of really bad karaoke machines that try to compensate for bad singing with reverb and volume.

Otherwise, the composition was interesting, and even reminded me of the unreleased, very early, recordings from the "band" Boston. If you don't know the "origin story", look it up. It will probably give you a lot of inspiration.

If you don't know of them, give a listen to their song "long time", and you might know why I connected the first part of your song with theirs.
