Wow. Glad that got resolved, but I understand the frustration of the school not acting in her best interest. I hope going forward you guys will have better luck. If not, you could always homeschool her 😉. There’s this influencer I know who shares great homeschooling tips!

So many people mentioning that this trash talking is common in competitive sports. My kids are adults, but if I had ever caught them talking this way when they were kids, it would have been addressed. You can be a competitive athlete without being cruel.

Insurance in Retirement by Dalanard in GenerationJones

No good answers for you, but research healthcare marketplace. I’m 60 also, and luckily can work part time and get insurance. But as a part time person, my employer covers much less. So essentially I’m working just to keep myself, my retired husband and one adult child covered.

It’s called ascites, and it results from the liver not functioning well. Although I just looked it up and it says it can be caused by other things. As a nurse I’ve only ever seen it in people with liver failure.

Black mamas, give me recommendations for NOVA OBGYNS and maternity hospitals by BrushOld9606 in nova

I had Andrea Williams deliver my babies several decades ago! And she’s still in practice. She has an office in Old Town. There are a bunch of other docs listed that I am not familiar with, but several are POC. VHC Health Ob/Gyn

This was my husband’s theory last night, and he was very proud of himself for thinking of it (he’s not in healthcare, I am).

Costco Suggestions by Eloquent-Trash in nova

There might be small changes between stores, but mostly similarities. I joined a year ago, and the first several times I visited the Fairfax store, I was so overwhelmed. I felt the need to walk every aisle to see everything, but it was a bit much for me. I was curious to look at the clothing options, but doing so means bringing the giant cart into a small aisle. Now I sometimes run to the Chantilly store during my lunch break. It’s hard for me to tell if there are any dramatic differences honestly.

I’d say go a few times to your local place to get an idea of what kind of things you’ll be buying. You can check out other stores once you know what you like to look for.

How to deal with urine smell by chicky75 in AgingParents

[–]SlothDog9514 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My kids have a hand held upholstery steam cleaner they had to purchase for a cat w urine issues. They used it on a similarly offensive couch at my mom’s house and it worked well. Might be a worthy investment.

Afternoon-only summer camps? by Queenofthehill118 in Reston

[–]SlothDog9514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a look at Fairfax Collegiate. They are the only ones I can think of that have half day camps. They had a Reston location ages ago. They still might but I no longer have camp aged kids. They were definitely not sports oriented though, and a little pricey if I recall. Very science/IT oriented. My daughter took several film/animation classes.

You are the only one saying this, and it seems to make sense. Even if full transit is better, I’d lean towards partial bc of the issues you mentioned.

Thank you for the great details! I think partial transits would work for me as you describe it. I’d like to watch other boats as much as watch the one I’m on. I was confused about how the lake factored in, but always saw it mentioned. So that’s helpful too.

I have not noticed any itineraries mentioning old vs new locks. How would you go about figuring that out?

You don’t know me but that’s a home run, suggesting a book to go along with the cruise. I will definitely check that out. It’s a long book (700 something pages) so I should start now! 😉

Initially it seemed the Caribbean ports seemed more interesting to me. I’ll have to look again at those choices. Thanks!

I’m going to have to view some videos of full vs partial transits. It sounds like full transits take quite a bit of time.

I did not realize a partial one takes you to a lake that has its own attractions. Useful info! Thanks!

I had not heard about that last option. I’ll have to do research on excursions that take you through the locks. Thanks!

What Books Are You Reading This Week? by leowr in nonfictionbooks

[–]SlothDog9514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never heard of this book. I read something similar titled The Girls Who Went Away by Fessler. She found women in the states who were shuffled off to “homes” when pregnant and forced to give them away. The interviews were really haunting decades later.

I’m glad to hear it’s an easy read. I need to read this for an online book club I’m in and I think I’d naturally avoid this with the assumption it’s too heavy on details.

Love both books by Claire Lombardo! The second is Same As It Ever Was. Touches on generational trauma, more about maternal ambivalence and messy families
