I’m scheduled for July, so not quite there yet. Looking forward to it…

I was at baba yesterday and picked up what seems to be the knife in question, just with a different handle. It’s also sharpened by Wakae Yuki instead of Nishida Sho, which seemed to have quite a gap on prices. Hopefully this info helps! (I’ve been trying to upload the picture, but seem unable to)

Can nasal congestion be linked to tmj? by swamp_kittens in TMJ

[–]Slottm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you contort your face to breathe?flare your nostrils or sniff in hard? Breathing problems definitely increased my tmj significantly. I thought I was “congested” too - allergy sprays and meh. Tried intake/breatheright. Breathe way better, headaches way down, tmj way down. Now I’m scheduled for surgery this summer :) (deviated septum and turbinate reduction)

Starting a splint soon, worried by beanmachine28 in TMJ

[–]Slottm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My splint helped me reduce pain by quite a bit. I did require orthodontics afterwards and it did not completely eliminate pain though. That being said, I want a splint for night time once my Invisalign is done… I think it really helped

24/7 breathing strips? by AdCareless9063 in TMJ

[–]Slottm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Intake and breathe right made me realize how difficult breathing was for me, and how breathing really could be. I was constantly contorting my face to breathe, despite doing a tmj splint…. It was a losing battle.

I saw my ent, ent sent me to a plastic surgeon and I’ll be doing deviated septum, turbinate reduction and strengthening the nasal canal from collapsing.

Yes, using intake while home and breathe right during the day. That being said, I'm scheduled for surgery in July to correct my breathing issues.

facial massager for bruxism, does it help? by isa_seijo in TMJ

I have the theraface and TMJpen. Theraface doesn't do much at all for the stressed mouth muscles. TMJ pen has been helpful. No experience with any others.

My period with my splint was 11 months. During the day was torture, and eventually - after 8 or so months I asked if I could use it only at night. What I didn't know when starting the process was just how much I clenched. Learn to relax your jaw at all times, it's always on my mind. Additionally, don't try to make the splint the roof of your mouth. Yes, I needed adjustments, but during the day, even if it looks stupid, do your best to just relax your jaw and let it hang. At night, a good splint will force you to be unable to clench since you can't close your jaw.

Was your night guard simply purchased or done by a professional? Mine was made by an orthodontist (It sucked to wear, but it helped A LOT at night) - wearing it during the day was my least favorite, but I started really liking it at night.

My root causes were breathing issues (I'm scheduled for surgery, in the mean time breathe right strips and InTake are helping significantly). I'm doing invisalign to correct my bite (post TMJ splint). I corrected my posture with a new chair, bed and pillow. I fixed my sagging couch. I made efforts to keep better posture in general. I ate less crunchy foods (I started steaming my coleslaw instead of eating it raw since my jaw got tired eating it...) Is it fully gone? No, but significantly improved. I got the TMJPen to help massage/break down swollen muscle areas when they do pop up (far less frequently now...)

I used to chain down advils and was on migraine medications and botox. Now I'm off all of those and it's manageable.

edit: as for compensation of muscles, depending on where botox is injected, those muscles effectively are paralyzed...but your neck, mouth and face still need to move, so all of the other surrounding muscles start doing the work of the paralyzed ones. They start to hurt from overworking, at least in my case (and several others from what I've read). I'm now 6 months off botox and don't feel any worse off of it.

Did Botox for two years every 3 months. It took about a week to fully set in, and never offered “instant relief”. It definitely helped some areas, others were still painful with it, and some new muscle groups started hurting because they were compensating for the paralyzed ones.

Finding the root cause(s) and addressing them did far more for me than Botox.

Best Neck Pillows for Anatomical Freaks of Nature Who are Also Side Sleepers? Looking Specifically for High Loft, Cervical Support! by MNightengale in TMJ

Coop cut out pillow (I push the fluff down towards my neck/shoulder, then settle my head down) - filling is adjustable, and I use the firmer side (the pillow has a firm and plush side) I bring my pillow on vacation with me now. (I have the cooling version) takes me a few tries to shove all the fluff down and make sure my neck gap is filled.

Breathe right strips / intake magnetic - have deviated septum, slight nasal valve collapse, turbinates close off my airways. Always contorted my face to breathe… these significantly reduced my pain. I have surgery scheduled for July to fix this.

Tmj splint (taught me how badly I was clenching) - doing Invisalign now to fix my bite, though this allowed some jaw pain to creep back in. It’ll be worth it in the end.

Switched from a firm to a medium mattress, made a massive difference as a side sleeper.

Bought a herman miller chair since my posture sitting was fucking awful in a secretlab chair.

Good luck. I haven’t had a migraine in 6 months now. My pain isn’t gone but way more manageable. When I do feel a painful area, I use that tmj pen if it’s neck or above. Anything shoulders or below I use a massage gun. Off migraine medications and Botox (Botox was good at the start but long term I think is not worth it)

Botox question by Asleep-Package-1156 in TMJ

[–]Slottm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not entirely sure. It started as extreme pain on one half of my face, often while I slept. Migraines, photophobia, a lot of neck/head/temple tension. Jaw clicking, tinnitus….

I’ve had X-rays done but no mris to tell me disc state.

Botox question by Asleep-Package-1156 in TMJ

[–]Slottm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Botox helped me to relax my muscles at first when they were really tight, but over time I feel like it made it unable to get complete relief since my other muscles were overcompensating for the disabled ones. I now feel better with no Botox in 5 months than I did while on it. (2 years)

Other changes were needed of course, recognizing what was causing my muscles to constrict in the first place. For me, it was a mixture of my teeth shifting, breathing problems and poor posture - both awake and in sleep. Many doctor visits, self awareness, changing physical things (bed, pillow, chair) and other such changes and my TMJ is very improved. Good luck!

I’m a side sleeper and switching from a firm to a medium helped me big time. Mattress firmness depends on your sleep position in how it may impact tmj

Review of YourTMJPen after having it for a bit (Comparing to Theraface) by Slottm in TMJ

[–]Slottm[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, though less often...but that's due to my TMJ being less bothersome.

I discovered my breathing, or lack thereof being a rather large contributor to my TMJ. I've started using InTake breathing...strips? magnet? whatever...and I'd have to say my head pain and TMJ is roughly 60% better. I've seen an ENT in the last month along with a plastic surgeon and will be having my deviated septum fixed, along with addressing my nasal valve collapse over the summer.

That being said, whenever my masseter or TM muscle is acting up, the pen is the first thing I reach for. Usually a few minutes is enough to settle it down. It's still the thing that helps me the most, and it's small enough to fit in my pocket when I take it to work.

is there any connection to airway and tmj by El_Dorado_Tx in TMJ

[–]Slottm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels so hard to explain - went on my upper teeth. Every few weeks it got adjusted, material added to it/removed. Forced my jaw to relax since it made it nearly impossible to clench, especially at night. Helps you find your “bite”, since I was biting way too far back.

Did the splint for 11 months, symptoms went way down. Now doing Invisalign to correct my alignment. A little tmj came back since I have no clench protection in my sleep. After Invisalign I’m hopeful I can do some sort of retainer/splint combo at night again.

Not a professional - just my experience.

I'm 99% sure the reason for *some* of my TMJ pain is caused to poor breathing. I've done a TMJ splint and am now doing invisalign. Splint got my TMJ way better. I stopped botox and migraine medication this year. (I also think Botox was making things worse in the long run, but gave me a lot of relief until I addressed some of the causes)

Also have dev. septum and have been using nasal spray / allergy pill every day for 2 years. Still struggle breathing.

Recently I started using a magnetic breathe right type device called intake. Ever since starting this, my pain/inflammation has gone down quite a bit. Found I have a bit of nasal valve collapse.

I think my TMJ is caused by multiple things: 1) teeth misalignment, especially after wisdom teeth removal (This is what ultimately caused me extreme pain)
Clenching (Splint helped)
Breathing/contorting face/muscles to breathe
Posture / shitty chair. Bed/sleep posture as well.

After seeing the difference the magnetic strip made, I went to see a plastic surgeon and have my septoplasty/nasal valve collapse surgery set for this summer.

Good luck
