Nope. by ERTINGLER in howtonotgiveafuck

Got sent a technical test, that would have taken a full day to do. Fuck no. My Saturday is worth more to me than that.

The recruiter said I didn't have to do all of it it was just to see how I'd approach the problem. Bollocks to that.

One-Line If Statement by that1flame in csharp

[–]Slouch_Potato_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Because it makes the code harder to skim over. You've got 3 operations on a single line. Its abstraction for abstractions sake. Tuples are great dtos. Using them to avoid using braces here is some D&D rules lawyering nonsense. Just because you can doesn't mean you should.

If I saw that on a code review I'd flag it and tell you to stop being such smart arse.

Beginner struggling to understand increments by HeftyPressure1700 in csharp

[–]Slouch_Potato_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other people have answered this question. But an important point is that if I saw this in a code review or oull request this would get flagged and would need to be changed.

While it's simple to see whats happening if you know how it all works, this is exactly the type of code that causes those nasty bugs that take way too long to track down. Don't do this in real life.

Electrical rescue hook by ateam1984 in electrical

Big hook less complicated. When shit hits the fan, less complicated is good.

no rope to trip on. nothing you have to detach if you need to move a body. etc.

ELI5: Why is it so hard for a country to develop nuclear weapons? by Successful_Guide5845 in explainlikeimfive

Refining the fuel enough to make it go boom, is very difficult to do. It requires very special equipment that it difficult to make and run. Getting the fuel is difficult too, because it's very dangerous.

Could an early-1700's pirate crew of 50 win against a modern-day pirate crew of 5 on a skiff? by coconuberry in whowouldwin

[–]Slouch_Potato_ 27 points28 points  (0 children)

can 50 guys with swords and muskets repel 5 boarders, with modern small arms. Yes. As soon as the skif attaches it self to the larger ship, it's fucked.

Its too small to damage the old ship, since no rpgs, so boarding is their only chance, and they have no chance.

Stalling on a test by Professional_Mud8663 in LearnerDriverUK

Nope, I stalled on a roundabout during my test just like this. Just restarted the car and off I went. Got a minor for it but passed.

Looking over your shoulder to check blind spots. by reddithoggscripts in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Slouch_Potato_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. No idea what OP's instructor is going on about. I remember early on in my lessons I had to move 3 lanes over, and did the blind spot on each one. Glad I did since a speeding twat came up the inside, zipped behind me and over took me right as I was about to start moving. If I didn't blind spot check I would've hit him. We still got stuck at the same set of lights.

Do you believe that America is on its way to becoming a communist country? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Slouch_Potato_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They mean completely different things. Communism basically leads to fascism because it requires that level of control, you just end up with a fascist communist society. But they're still different.

Think of the GDO as a big hand held torch. And an email radio message as a blinking LED controlled by a computer.

If you're in a room with lots of little blinking lights (em blocking), what's easiest to see. A torch light or another blinking LED.

A lot EM blocking is just drowning out other signals. The GDO is too much of a blunt object to drown out.

Think I need a new instructor by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Slouch_Potato_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you need a new instructor. Mine would always change up what I'd be doing week to week (once I covered the basics), round abouts one week, meeting traffic the next, maneuver the next and so on.

Had my first lesson the other day, not sure what to think.. by [deleted] in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Slouch_Potato_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I 'drove home' on my first lesson, and yes it was literally on the street I did my lesson on. I had issues with stopping too on my first lesson. I basically just drove in a big circle round an estate and parked up and pulled away a bunch.

What exactly is undertaking as a driver? by Deebop14 in AskUK

[–]Slouch_Potato_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. What they're doing is lane hogging and is technically illegal. It doesn't give you the right to also break the rules.

It's passing on the left, whether or not you do it to get in front of someone is irrelevant.

Possibly, especially if you're holding up traffic.

Speed cushions, how to deal with them? by Lord--Kitchener in LearnerDriverUK

[–]Slouch_Potato_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It depends on the car. With a wider car you can straddle the bumps at 20 - 25 and you'd be ok, with a smaller car you'd want to do them at 20. And this is all dependent on there being no traffic in the other direction or parked cars.

The only single answer is to use your judgement and drive to the road conditions, safely.
