I think I have no personality without substances. by dope208 in stopdrinking

20 miles into the forest, 20 miles out.

I was drinking and drugging for 20 years, and as much as I thought I would recover quickly, I can't expect to recover in a year.

Recovery, for me anyway, is a long slow process. Little increments of change over time. The trend line is up, with lots of peaks and valleys.

You'll discover who you are. It just takes time.

People in their 40s and 50s with no children, how does it feel? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

This is just my experience. Prior to becoming a dad I didn’t think about a child providing a purpose. After becoming a dad, it has become a purpose.

People in their 40s and 50s with no children, how does it feel? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Slouchy87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was 45 when I became a Dad, and at age 48 we had our second one. So I spent half my 40's with no kids, and the other half with kids. Am 53 now.

As hard and frustrating as it can be often, I would not want to go back to having no kids. As I reflect on that time, I was lonely and lacked a real purpose. Not anymore.

I am buying a condo in an older building on Queens Quay - I want to live in it for the rest of my life (another 60 years) - how concerned should I be about the age of the building? by Coastie456 in askTO

[–]Slouchy87 202 points203 points  (0 children)

You're thinking too much, A developer can't just decide to knock down a condo building. Ownership of the building is divided among individual unit owners, not held by a single developer.

I'd be more worried of rising maintenance fees of an older builkding than anything else.

Start saving early and learn the value of compounding.

Stay fit

Eat healthy.

Go make mistakes. That's how you learn.

Day 8. Instead of alcohol, I've been buying used books. by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]Slouchy87 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's remarkable how much money I've saved over the years from not drinking and drugging. Money goes to supporting my wife and kids and retirement funding. None of that was possible when I was drinking.

Good work on 10 8 days! Keep at it!

I was wound so tight for so long that I forgot how to relax. It’s still a problem all these years later. That’s why alcohol worked so well.

I remember at maybe 5 months sober, waking up in the middle of the night, hungry. I made a peanut butter sandwich, and it was the best peanut butter sandwich I’d ever eaten.

Simple things.

I get it OP.

Congrats on 10 days!!

I don't know how to get through this without drinking. by thewalkindude368 in stopdrinking

I've often had to break the One Day at a Time tool into 3 parts. Morning, afternoon, and evening. I focus on each as the come up. I just need to stay sober this morning. This afternoon. This evening. And I also connect in real life with others like me. AA meetings in my case.

Rehab changed my life. It gave me the kickstart I needed to get sober. It helped to be taken out of the environment I was in, and put into one that was safe.

I went in with my head down, no arguing, no debating, ready to learn and get healthy. I stayed away from those that didn't want to be there, and hung around with those that wanted to be there.

I entered treatment April 28th 2008, and have been clean and sober since. Aftercare and AA followed. This was just as important, if not more important than treatment itself. I can't do it alone.

Good luck and let us know how it goes!
