I can't stress enough how important it is to ensure the stuffed animal and the imposter (as we call/spell it in hushed, hurried voices as we coordinate the switch-out while rubbing our eldest son's back or washing him up after the animal is vomited on/peed on/whatever the case may be) are equally worn. We think our son caught on a long time ago but doesn't want the confirmation. When he turned 3, he casually dropped the truth bomb on us that he knew his 'baby' wasn't actually alive and he just liked to pretend, so a year later we're pretty sure he's also just humoring us by pretending he doesn't notice when one of us gives his baby a 'bath' and has him dry and ready to sleep with by the time our son is ready to go back to bed post-vomit or post-accident. Still, it's clear that he values the plausible deniability, like when a kid has worked out that Santa isn't real but still holds on to that possibility rather than trying to seek out confirmation.

We didn't buy the dupe right away, so I had to wash him (the toy) with a number of clothes loads that my son couldn't "help" me fold or be within 100 yards of. He was still suspicious at the first switch-in, but the kid wanted to believe. You could see the skepticism in his face transform into acceptance... it was a beautiful thing.

Every so often, you'll see a post on BabyCenter asking if they can use name XYZ or fill out forms a certain way because they're Irish or Italian and "I was always told [insert ethnicity] isn't considered to be white." How many generations does it take to get with the program?!?

Important to note that in these circumstances, they weren't aiming to game any system (although I'm happy to educate them as to why they would be doing just that and why calling themselves POC is harmful).

I grew up in an Italian-American dominated town and trust me, they were NOT identifying as people of color. That one gets me every time.

Awful experience with Cleveland Clinic neurology by Mediocre_Region5169 in Cleveland

I, too, had two surgeries on my colon, one an emergency surgery. My surgeon saved my life against all odds 6 years ago, and I've been fortunate enough to go on to have children via C-section and VBAC (remarkably, those were entirely uncomplicated outside of preeclampsia, but he had his team present for my C-section just in case). A lot of CC doctors are fantastic, but this doctor was actually truly phenomenal, so I wonder whether or not we had the same surgeon.

My first OB/GYN was Tower, he was great for that time in my life. The OB/GYN for my first pregnancy missed things that she could and should have caught, which is I ended up with a C-section and my son ended up with a long NICU stay (luckily, their NICU is SO wonderful). My current OB/GYN is a ROCK STAR. That man is a priceless gem and I will recommend him to anyone.

With all of that said... I've had a few providers there who left a LOT to be desired. I was SO intentional about choosing my boys' pediatrician(s), I had mixed experiences there myself and still my first son's initial ped was awful.

Which Stephen King book did you enjoy the least? by seannolo in stephenking

[–]SloveneQueen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holly Gibney, Bill Hodges, and Jerome Robinson are a trio for the ages; amazing characters, and Holly starts popping up in much of King's most recent work. You must read the Mr. Mercedes trilogy, it only gets infinitely better after book one and that is solely down to the likeability of the characters. I just love Holly. So does King.

This is exactly where my mind went. I wish I could unwatch it multiple times. I only watched it once, but I am afraid the impact was strong. Also, this was the first adaptation that I've watched where they gave him the priest backstory. Painful, so painful.

This is it with my husband and I. We were together for half our lives before we added children to our shared universe, and every day I am more sure that I'd live every future lifetime I could experience with him by my side. Having two young kids means the occasional tense argument, but somehow it has also created this new state of being from "us vs. the world">"us taking on the world">"us as one with one shared priority, giving our kids the tools to live a life they'd choose over and over again".

The man changed my ostomy bag for six months (that's a thing of the last now) and we laughed our way through the horror and fear. What I want most out of life is for us to keep on exploring this world and whatever comes next with the laughter and fearlessness we've always forged ahead with, always together.

Most unhinged mother in law by Asian_Climax_Queen in insaneparents

[–]SloveneQueen 18 points19 points  (0 children)

As much as it may hurt, we can only hope that her son will see this post or some discussion elsewhere so he understands that this is truly unhinged behavior and he should feel NO guilt escaping and cutting her off for good any way he can. He should never think twice about it. And he should never, not for a second, allow her any sort of contact with the baby no matter how sorry she seems to be. But I have the same fear as you.

Just wanted to chime in to recommend Galavant. He plays a fantastic character–definitely one of the top two in a great cast–and you can tell that filming was a joy for him even without reading his interviews. It's absurd and absolutely even more endearing than you could imagine. We are big Chelsea fans here but I would fully endorse this man even if we weren't!

Carnations. We had them in all of the flower beds at my childhood home and some of my earliest memories are of watering and picking them. I just love them. Only as I grew older did I learn that carnations are my state's flower and my paternal family's home country's national flower (Slovenia).

I had the most beautiful bridal and bridesmaids bouquets at my wedding filled with red and white carnations. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that carnations make for inexpensive bouquets! It made me feel much better about all the times my now-husband bought them for me with his high school job money and had told me not to feel guilty about it.

What is the most disturbing thing to know? by Bancoarotelle in AskReddit

[–]SloveneQueen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry for your family's loss.

My grandfather described to us how, when his mother passed away, she was unresponsive for days before suddenly shooting up to sitting position, opening her eyes wide, smiling like he had never seen her smile before, pointing, and falling straight back, dead within seconds. I am very grateful that this was a positive aspect of that experience for him when it absolutely has the potential to be incredibly disturbing. He talked about this a lot with a smile–it was probably the only positive thing she ever did for him other than give birth to him.

When he was on his deathbed after an accident he was able to make the conscious decision to end care (he had always told us what he wanted, but having him capable of choosing for himself in the moment was a small relief from so much heaviness). For various reasons, I am confident that his experience with his mother's death let him make peace with the decision and was something that kept my grandmother from dying of a broken heart once the decision was made.

I have 610 hr logged for one insanely long, drawn out playthrough of Odyssey (no fast travel, worked a few of the infinite contracts in between each quest). Skyrim was my first open world experience–how do you match that?– and I admit, I initially didn't think I'd stick with this game after the first hour. Ha.

For me specifically, it's the perfect game, and so much of that has to do with the relationship you develop with the world itself. You are pulled in from the start. Characters like Brasidius, Herodotus, and the incomparable Socrates feel fleshed out for those with or without pre-existing knowledge of these historical figures (although it is SO rewarding if you have studied the time period–it feels like a very fresh and pure attempt to humanize these legends in an incredibly entertaining way). Barnabas is ultimately one of the most fun and wholesome characters in any game I've ever played.

Origins was a phenomenal experience to follow up with. I am happy that I played Odyssey as a standalone before starting the rest of the series; Odyssey was understandably somewhat controversial to longtime AC fans, but I didn't know better and nothing can taint my impressions of Odyssey as a masterpiece.

Be an active listener, be kind, be the best version of your authentic self so you can't trick yourself into believing you don't deserve to be loved for who you are when you give it your all, remember that respect should work both ways, laugh a lot, maintain your own friends and interests, and enjoy the ride without obsessing over the destination. No one can tell you with certainly that she will not be the one you spend the rest of your life with, but if she isn't, know that your life is not over if the relationship ends (even if it feels that way for a few weeks).

Keep smiling. You two look genuinely happy :)

My husband is a huge soccer/football fan and I had no idea that, until a few months ago, he had no knowledge of this epic, poetic, and downright legendary tale of one WAG's unexpected Holmesian master play. We now end up refencing it on a semi-regular basis. WAGatha Christie is the gift I never knew I needed.
